Multiphoton Coincidence Spectroscopy
We extend the analysis of photon coincidence spectroscopy beyond bichromatic
excitation and two-photon coincidence detection to include multichromatic
excitation and multiphoton coincidence detection. Trichromatic excitation and
three-photon coincidence spectroscopy are studied in detail, and we identify an
observable signature of a triple resonance in an atom-cavity system.Comment: 6 page, REVTeXs, 6 Postscript figures. The abstract appeared in the

MOND and Cosmology
I review various ideas on MOND cosmology and structure formation beginning
with non-relativistic models in analogy with Newtonian cosmology. I discuss
relativistic MOND cosmology in the context of Bekenstein's theory and propose
an alternative biscalar effective theory of MOND in which the acceleration
parameter is identified with the cosmic time derivative of a matter coupling
scalar field. Cosmic CDM appears in this theory as scalar field oscillations of
the auxiliary "coupling strength" field.Comment: 8 pages, LaTeX, 2 figures, to appear in proceedings of IAP05 in

The luminosity function of the brightest galaxies in the IRAS survey
Results from a study of the far infrared properties of the brightest galaxies in the IRAS survey are described. There is a correlation between the infrared luminosity and the infrared to optical luminosity ratio and between the infrared luminosity and the far infrared color temperature in these galaxies. The infrared bright galaxies represent a significant component of extragalactic objects in the local universe, being comparable in space density to the Seyferts, optically identified starburst galaxies, and more numerous than quasars at the same bolometric luminosity. The far infrared luminosity in the local universe is approximately 25% of the starlight output in the same volume
Optical generation of hybrid entangled state via entangling single-photon-added coherent state
We propose a feasible scheme to realize the optical entanglement of
single-photon-added coherent state (SPACS) and show that, besides the Sanders
entangled coherent state, the entangled SPACS also leads to new forms of hybrid
entanglement of quantum Fock state and classical coherent state. We probe the
essential difference of two types of hybrid entangled state (HES). This HES
provides a novel link between the discrete- and the continuous-variable
entanglement in a natural way.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figure
The Interstellar Medium of IRAS 08572+3915 NW: H3+ and Warm High Velocity CO
We confirm the first detection of the molecular ion H3+ in an extragalactic
object, the highly obscured ultraluminous galaxy IRAS 08572+3915 NW. We also
have detected absorption lines of the fundamental band of CO in this galaxy.
The CO absorption consists of a cold component close to the systemic velocity
and warm, highly blueshifted and redshifted components. The warm blueshifted
component is remarkably strong and broad and extends at least to -350 km/s.
Some analogies can be drawn between the H3+ and cold CO in IRAS08572+3915 NW
and the same species seen toward the Galactic center. The profiles of the warm
CO components are not those expected from a dusty torus of the type thought to
obscure active galactic nuclei. They are probably formed close to the dust
continuum surface near the buried and active nucleus and are probably
associated with an unusual and energetic event there.Comment: 21 pages, 4 postscript figures, accepted by Ap
Bayes-X: a Bayesian inference tool for the analysis of X-ray observations of galaxy clusters
We present the first public release of our Bayesian inference tool, Bayes-X,
for the analysis of X-ray observations of galaxy clusters. We illustrate the
use of Bayes-X by analysing a set of four simulated clusters at z=0.2-0.9 as
they would be observed by a Chandra-like X-ray observatory. In both the
simulations and the analysis pipeline we assume that the dark matter density
follows a spherically-symmetric Navarro, Frenk and White (NFW) profile and that
the gas pressure is described by a generalised NFW (GNFW) profile. We then
perform four sets of analyses. By numerically exploring the joint probability
distribution of the cluster parameters given simulated Chandra-like data, we
show that the model and analysis technique can robustly return the simulated
cluster input quantities, constrain the cluster physical parameters and reveal
the degeneracies among the model parameters and cluster physical parameters. We
then analyse Chandra data on the nearby cluster, A262, and derive the cluster
physical profiles. To illustrate the performance of the Bayesian model
selection, we also carried out analyses assuming an Einasto profile for the
matter density and calculated the Bayes factor. The results of the model
selection analyses for the simulated data favour the NFW model as expected.
However, we find that the Einasto profile is preferred in the analysis of A262.
The Bayes-X software, which is implemented in Fortran 90, is available at

Evidence for Quasar Activity Triggered by Galaxy Mergers in HST Observations of Dust-reddened Quasars
We present Hubble ACS images of thirteen dust reddened Type-1 quasars
selected from the FIRST/2MASS Red Quasar Survey. These quasars have high
intrinsic luminosities after correction for dust obscuration (-23.5 > M_B >
-26.2 from K-magnitude). The images show strong evidence of recent or ongoing
interaction in eleven of the thirteen cases, even before the quasar nucleus is
subtracted. None of the host galaxies are well fit by a simple elliptical
profile. The fraction of quasars showing interaction is significantly higher
than the 30% seen in samples of host galaxies of normal, unobscured quasars.
There is a weak correlation between the amount of dust reddening and the
magnitude of interaction in the host galaxy, measured using the Gini
coefficient and the Concentration index. Although few host galaxy studies of
normal quasars are matched to ours in intrinsic quasar luminosity, no evidence
has been found for a strong dependence of merger activity on host luminosity in
samples of the host galaxies of normal quasars. We thus believe that the high
merger fraction in our sample is related to their obscured nature, with a
significant amount of reddening occurring in the host galaxy. The red quasar
phenomenon seems to have an evolutionary explanation, with the young quasar
spending the early part of its lifetime enshrouded in an interacting galaxy.
This might be further indication of a link between AGN and starburst galaxies.Comment: 18 pages, 6 low resolution figures, accepted for publication in Ap
