Risk analysis of marine activities in the Belgian part of the North Sea (RAMA): final report
RAMA is a 2-year project (04/2004 - 04/2006) executed by two Belgian partners, Ecolas NV (Environmental Consultancy Agency) and the Maritime Institute (University of Ghent), and financed by the SPSD II research program, specific actions, of the Belgian Science Policy (BELPSO). RAMA aims to assess the environmental risks of spills by commercial shipping activities on the Belgian Part of the North Sea. Shipping patterns, transports of dangerous goods, probability of risks and the potential impact of spill incidents (oil & hazardous and noxious substances) will be assessed. The risk analysis within this project studies both the chances of a spill accident happening and the environmental impacts in case of an accident. The valorisation of the RAMA project will result in a thorough analysis of the current status of the shipping at the North Sea in relation to the issue of safety. The scope of the project will however go beyond the mere result of a fundamental risk analysis of the commercial shipping at the North Sea. It is also aiming at the formulation of recommendations to improve the safety level for the environment and at an optimization of response in the framework of the Belgian "North Sea Disaster Plan"
The envelope of IRC+10216 reflecting the galactic light: UBV surface brightness photometry and interpretation
We present and analyse new optical images of the dust envelope surrounding
the high mass-loss carbon star IRC+10216. This envelope is seen due to external
illumination by galactic light. Intensity profiles and colors of the nebula
were obtained in the UBV bandpasses. The data are compared with the results of
a radiative transfer model calculating multiple scattering of interstellar
field photons by dust grains with a single radius. The data show that the
observed radial shape of the nebula, especially its half maximum radius, does
not depend on wavelength (within experimental errors), suggesting that grains
scatter in the grey regime, etc, etc (this abstract has been shortened)Comment: accepted by A
White Dwarf - Red Dwarf Systems Resolved with the Hubble Space Telescope: I. First Results
First results are presented for a Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for
Surveys snapshot study of white dwarfs with likely red dwarf companions. Of 48
targets observed and analyzed so far, 27 are totally or partially resolved into
two or more components, while an additional 15 systems are almost certainly
unresolved binaries. These results provide the first direct empirical evidence
for a bimodal distribution of orbital separations among binary systems

Finite Temperature Models of Bose-Einstein Condensation
The theoretical description of trapped weakly-interacting Bose-Einstein
condensates is characterized by a large number of seemingly very different
approaches which have been developed over the course of time by researchers
with very distinct backgrounds. Newcomers to this field, experimentalists and
young researchers all face a considerable challenge in navigating through the
`maze' of abundant theoretical models, and simple correspondences between
existing approaches are not always very transparent. This Tutorial provides a
generic introduction to such theories, in an attempt to single out common
features and deficiencies of certain `classes of approaches' identified by
their physical content, rather than their particular mathematical
implementation.
This Tutorial is structured in a manner accessible to a non-specialist with a
good working knowledge of quantum mechanics. Although some familiarity with
concepts of quantum field theory would be an advantage, key notions such as the
occupation number representation of second quantization are nonetheless briefly
reviewed. Following a general introduction, the complexity of models is
gradually built up, starting from the basic zero-temperature formalism of the
Gross-Pitaevskii equation. This structure enables readers to probe different
levels of theoretical developments (mean-field, number-conserving and
stochastic) according to their particular needs. In addition to its `training
element', we hope that this Tutorial will prove useful to active researchers in
this field, both in terms of the correspondences made between different
theoretical models, and as a source of reference for existing and developing

Ab Initio Calculation of Relativistic Corrections to the Static Interquark potential I: SU(2) Gauge Theory
We test the capability of state-of-the-art lattice techniques for a precise
determination of relativistic corrections to the static interquark potential,
by use of SU(2) gauge theory. Emphasis is put on the short range structure of
the spin dependent potentials, with lattice resolution a ranging from a approx
0.04 fm (at beta=2.74) down to a approx 0.02 fm (at beta=2.96) on volumes of
32^4 and 48^4 lattice sites. We find a new short range Coulomb-like
contribution to the spin-orbit potential V_1'.Comment: 37 pages REVTeX with 20 encapsuled ps figure
Complete O(v^2) corrections to the static interquark potential from SU(3) gauge theory
For the first time, we determine the complete spin- and momentum-dependent
order v^2 corrections to the static interquark potential from simulations of
QCD in the valence quark approximation at inverse lattice spacings of 2-3 GeV.
A new flavor dependent correction to the central potential is found. We report
a 1/r^2 contribution to the long range spin-orbit potential V_1'. The other
spin-dependent potentials turn out to be short ranged and can be well
understood by means of perturbation theory. The momentum-dependent potentials
qualitatively agree with minimal area law expectations. In view of spectrum
calculations, we discuss the matching of the effective nonrelativistic theory
to QCD as well as renormalization of lattice results. In a first survey of the
resulting bottomonia and charmonia spectra we reproduce the experimental levels
within average errors of 12.5 MeV and 22 MeV, respectively.Comment: 54 pages REVTeX with 24 encapsuled ps figure
