A S=1/2 vanadium-based geometrically frustrated spinel system Li2ZnV3O8
We report the synthesis and characterization of Li2ZnV3O8, which is a new
Zn-doped LiV2O4 system containing only tetravalent vanadium. A Curie-Weiss
susceptibility with a Curie-Weiss temperature of CW ~214 K suggests the
presence of strong antiferromagnetic correlations in this system. We have
observed a splitting between the zero-field cooled ZFC and field cooled FC
susceptibility curves below 6 K. A peak is present in the ZFC curve around 3.5
K suggestive of spin-freezing . Similarly, a broad hump is also seen in the
inferred magnetic heat capacity around 9 K. The consequent entropy change is
only about 8% of the value expected for an ordered S = 1=2 system. This
reduction indicates continued presence of large disorder in the system in spite
of the large CW, which might result from strong geometric frustration in
the system. We did not find any temperature T dependence in our 7Li nuclear
magnetic resonance NMR shift down to 6 K (an abrupt change in the shift takes
place below 6 K) though considerable T-dependence has been found in literature
for LiV2O4- undoped or with other Zn/Ti contents. Consistent with the above
observation, the 7Li nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 is relatively
small and nearly T-independent except a small increase close to the freezing
temperature, once again, small compared to undoped or 10% Zn or 20% Ti-doped
LiV2O4.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures, accepted in JPCM (Journal of Physics condensed

Quantum Cloning, Bell's Inequality and Teleportation
We analyze a possibility of using the two qubit output state from
Buzek-Hillery quantum copying machine (not necessarily universal quantum
cloning machine) as a teleportation channel. We show that there is a range of
values of the machine parameter for which the two qubit output state is
entangled and violates Bell-CHSH inequality and for a different range it
remains entangled but does not violate Bell-CHSH inequality. Further we observe
that for certain values of the machine parameter the two-qubit mixed state can
be used as a teleportation channel. The use of the output state from the
Buzek-Hillery cloning machine as a teleportation channel provides an additional
appeal to the cloning machine and motivation of our present work.Comment: 7 pages and no figures, Accepted in Journal of Physics
Testing Microfluidic Fully Programmable Valve Arrays (FPVAs)
Fully Programmable Valve Array (FPVA) has emerged as a new architecture for
the next-generation flow-based microfluidic biochips. This 2D-array consists of
regularly-arranged valves, which can be dynamically configured by users to
realize microfluidic devices of different shapes and sizes as well as
interconnections. Additionally, the regularity of the underlying structure
renders FPVAs easier to integrate on a tiny chip. However, these arrays may
suffer from various manufacturing defects such as blockage and leakage in
control and flow channels. Unfortunately, no efficient method is yet known for
testing such a general-purpose architecture. In this paper, we present a novel
formulation using the concept of flow paths and cut-sets, and describe an
ILP-based hierarchical strategy for generating compact test sets that can
detect multiple faults in FPVAs. Simulation results demonstrate the efficacy of
the proposed method in detecting manufacturing faults with only a small number
of test vectors.Comment: Design, Automation and Test in Europe (DATE), March 201
Colchicine binding activity of rat brain polysomes
In this communication, we report the presence of a unique colchicine-binding activity in the polysomes of rat brain. This drug-binding property, is somewhat similar to that of tubulin isolated from many sources; however, it differs in several bio-chemical characteristics such as (i) thermal stability of colchicine-binding site, (ii) protection of binding site by vinblastine and (iii) time required for binding equilibration. Such binding of colchicine to the polysomes is most probably due to the presence of a nascent peptide chain of tubulin in the polysome
Purification of Mixed State with Closed Timelike Curve is not Possible
In ordinary quantum theory any mixed state can be purified in an enlarged
Hilbert space by bringing an ancillary system. The purified state does not
depend on the state of any extraneous system with which the mixed state is
going to interact and on the physical interaction. Here, we prove that it is
not possible to purify a mixed state that traverses a closed time like curve
(CTC) and allowed to interact in a consistent way with a causality-respecting
(CR) quantum system in the same manner. Thus, in general for arbitrary
interactions between CR and CTC systems there is no universal 'Church of the
larger Hilbert space' for mixed states with CTC. This shows that in quantum
theory with CTCs there can exist 'proper' and 'improper' mixtures.Comment: Latex2e, No Figs, 4 + pages, An error corrected, Results unchange
