Objective: Dental caries can cause pain and discomfort, especially in children. If they remain untreated, they can impact a child's oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) and trigger the release of salivary cortisol. Many research studies have been conducted to determine the influence of dental caries on the OHRQoL and salivary cortisol levels, but none has described the correlation between them. This research examined the correlation between the OHRQoL and the salivary cortisol levels in children with caries. Methods: This experiment was observational and analytical with a cross-sectional design. The experimental data were statistically analyzed using the Kendall's tau and Spearman's rank correlations to compare the OHRQoL and salivary cortisol levels. Results: The results of this study showed that there was a small correlation (r=0.3) between the OHRQoL and salivary cortisol level with a negative trend. This suggests that if the cortisol level slow, the child's OHRQoL is high. The chronic inflammation caused by dental caries can influence the OHRQoL and trigger the release of cortisol in the saliva. Conclusion: Children with good OHRQoLs have low salivary cortisol levels, suggesting an unstressed condition. Practical implications: Untreated caries may cause pulpitis (represent in decayed, missing, and filled teeth in this study) in children aged 8–10 years old has an impact in their OHRQoL. Meanwhile, salivary cortisol levels as biomarker of inflammation may influence in many factors

Objective: Caries are a major problem related to oral health among children. As it is an infectious disease, bacteria, especially Streptococcus mutans, play an important role in caries. Flavonoids have been known to have antibacterial effects, and ethanol, even at very low concentrations, reportedly has antibacterial effects and is widely used as a basic ingredient in drugs.Aim: This study aims to analyze the antibacterial effects of different concentrations of propolis flavonoids and ethanol against S. mutans ATPase activity. Methods: S. mutans cells were exposed to 0.5%, 0.25%, 0.1%, 0.075%, and 0.05% propolis flavonoids and then incubated in an anaerobic atmosphere for 48 h. The ATPase activity in these cells was then tested using a colorimetric assay. Results: No significant difference was found in the average ATPase activity of S. mutans after treatment with various concentrations of propolis flavonoids and ethanol. Conclusions: Thus, 0.5%, 0.25%, 0.1%, 0.075%, and 0.05% propolis flavonoids and 10% ethanol had similar effects against S. mutans ATPase activity. Further studies are necessary to evaluate the efficacy of flavonoids from Trigona spp. propolis.Â

SIMPLE: System Automatic Essay Assessment for Indonesian Language Subject Examination. Evaluation ofstudy of a student is a very important aspect of an educational process. Evaluation is aimed at measuring the level ofstudent understanding of the given lecture materials. Measuring student understanding of the course material, usingessay-type exam, is generally used as the evaluation tool. In this essay-type exam, the student has to answer questionsusing sentences, whereby choices of possible answers are not indicated. The student has to answer the questions withhis/her sentences. The answers may vary, since it reflects the student's best thoughts of the materials. One of theweaknesses of essay-type exam is the difficulty to grade the answers and it tends to be time consuming. Currently, automatic grading systems that may speed up the grading process, are being developed in many research institutions. The method used to grade, varies form one system to another, and one of the popular system is the Latent SemanticAnalysis (LSA). LSA is a method of grading essay by extracting words and representing the sentence in the form ofmathematical or statistical formulation, from a text with a relatively large number of words. The grade of the essay isdetermined, by matching the important words to a group of words prepared by the human rater. This paper describes aneffort to developed LSA, enhanced with word weighting, word order and the word synonym to improve the accuracy ofgrading. This system is called SIMPLE. SIMPLE is used to grade answers using bahasa Indonesia. The exam is carriedout on-line through the Web. From the experiments conducted, for small classes, the conformity of grade compared tothe grade of human rater lies between 69.80 % - 94.64 %, and for medium size classes the conformity lies between77.18 % - 98.42 % with the human rater. These results are roughly proportional with the result of LSA system, whichgrade essay given in English

CORRELATION BETWEEN ANXIETY IN MOTHERS AND CHILDREN WITH SENSORY IMPAIRMENTS BEFORE DENTAL TREATMENT

Objective: Mothers have very important roles in their children's development. Their instinctive love develops strong emotional connections with their children, especially when their children have sensory impairments (SI). Feelings experienced by mothers, such as anxiety toward dental treatment, can affect their children's emotions. Salivary alpha amylase (sAA) has been proposed as a biomarker of stress due to its sensitivity to changes in the body, such as dental anxiety. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between sAA levels in mothers and children with SI before dental treatment. Methods: Measurement of sAA from sixty pairs of children with SI and their mothers was taken together in the waiting room before the children's dental treatment. Spearman's analysis was used to find the correlation between their sAA levels. Results: In this study, sAA levels in mothers accompanying their children with SI correlated significantly with their children's sAA levels (r=0.533; p<0.002).Conclusions: The correlation between dental anxiety in mothers and children with SI before dental treatment was found to be significant.Practical Implications: Anxiety toward dental care is a phenomenon that frequently arises in children. Mothers, the main influencers of their children's development, are thought to be one cause of high anxiety in children. Children with special needs are at a higher risk for developing dental problems. Therefore, an understanding of these children's levels of anxiety can be used by pediatric dentists to improve dental care

SALIVARY ALPHA-AMYLASE AS A MEASURE OF ANXIETY BEFORE AND AFTER DENTAL TREATMENT FOR VISUALLY AND HEARING-IMPAIRED CHILDREN AND THEIR MOTHERS

Objective: Visual and hearing impairments are known to profoundly affect children's psychological development, including their anxiety. However, strong emotional relationship with their mother found in these children may help them cope. Measuring salivary alpha-amylase (sAA) in saliva samples is widely used in clinical settings as a reliable, non-invasive biomarker of anxiety level. Methods: Our objective was to evaluate sAA levels in visually and hearing-impaired children and their mothers before and after dental treatment. This study included 60 children with visual and hearing impairments and their mothers. sAA level of both children and mothers was sampled while they were together in the waiting room before treatment. The children then underwent dental prophylaxis in a separate room, and their post-treatment sAA was measured immediately afterward. At that time, their mother's post-treatment sAA was sampled in the waiting room. Data were analyzed using a Wilcoxon test. Results: sAA levels were found to differ significantly between pre- and post-dental treatment (p<0.05).Conclusion: This difference indicates that reducing maternal anxiety would be of great benefit in reducing anxiety in visually and hearing-impaired children. Practical implications: Appropriately managing anxiety in this group of children can be of great benefit to dentists in daily practice, helping them provide the care that these children need
