    Antiproton-Hydrogen annihilation at sub-kelvin temperatures

    Get PDF
The main properties of the interaction of ultra low-energy antiprotons (E≀10βˆ’6% E\le10^{-6} a.u.) with atomic hydrogen are established. They include the elastic and inelastic cross sections and Protonium (Pn) formation spectrum. The inverse Auger process (Pn+eβ†’H+pΛ‰Pn+e \to H+\bar{p}) is taken into account in the framework of an unitary coupled-channels model. The annihilation cross-section is found to be several times smaller than the predictions made by the black sphere absorption models. A family of pΛ‰H\bar{p}H nearthreshold metastable states is predicited. The dependence of Protonium formation probability on the position of such nearthreshold S-matrix singularities is analysed. An estimation for the HHΛ‰H\bar{H} annihilation cross section is obtained.Comment: latex.tar.gz file, 22 pages, 9 figure

Pauli equation and the method of supersymmetric factorization

We consider different variants of factorization of a 2x2 matrix Schroedinger/Pauli operator in two spatial dimensions. They allow to relate its spectrum to the sum of spectra of two scalar Schroedinger operators, in a manner similar to one-dimensional Darboux transformations. We consider both the case when such factorization is reduced to the ordinary 2-dimensional SUSY QM quasifactorization and a more general case which involves covariant derivatives. The admissible classes of electromagnetic fields are described and some illustrative examples are given.Comment: 18 pages, Late

Casimir interaction between a dielectric nanosphere and a metallic plane

We study the Casimir interaction between a dielectric nanosphere and a metallic plane, using the multiple scattering theory. Exact results are obtained with the dielectric described by a Sellmeier model and the metal by a Drude model. Asymptotic forms are discussed for small spheres, large or small distances. The well-known Casimir-Polder formula is recovered at the limit of vanishingly small spheres, while an expression better behaved at small distances is found for any finite value of the radius. The exact results are of particular interest for the study of quantum states of nanospheres in the vicinity of surfaces.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure

    Time-domain spectroscopy in the mid-infrared

    Get PDF
When coupled to characteristic, fingerprint vibrational and rotational motions of molecules, an electromagnetic field with an appropriate frequency and waveform offers a highly sensitive, highly informative probe, enabling chemically specific studies on a broad class of systems in physics, chemistry, biology, geosciences, and medicine. The frequencies of these signature molecular modes, however, lie in a region where accurate spectroscopic measurements are extremely difficult because of the lack of efficient detectors and spectrometers. Here, we show that, with a combination of advanced ultrafast technologies and nonlinear-optical waveform characterization, time-domain techniques can be advantageously extended to the metrology of fundamental molecular motions in the mid-infrared. In our scheme, the spectral modulation of ultrashort mid-infrared pulses, induced by rovibrational motions of molecules, gives rise to interfering coherent dark waveforms in the time domain. These high-visibility interference patterns can be read out by cross-correlation frequency-resolved gating of the field in the visible generated through ultrabroadband four-wave mixing in a gas phase

    Singular potentials and annihilation

We discuss the regularization of attractive singular potentials βˆ’Ξ±s/rs-\alpha _{s}/r^{s}, sβ‰₯2s\geq 2 by infinitesimal imaginary addition to interaction constant Ξ±s=Ξ±sΒ±i0\alpha_{s}=\alpha_{s}\pm i0. Such a procedure enables unique definition of scattering observables and is equal to an absorption (creation) of particles in the origin. It is shown, that suggested regularization is an analytical continuation of the scattering amplitudes of repulsive singular potential in interaction constant Ξ±s\alpha_{s}. The nearthreshold properties of regularized in a mentioned way singular potential are examined. We obtain expressions for the scattering lengths, which turn to be complex even for infinitesimal imaginary part of interaction constant. The problem of perturbation of nearthreshold states of regular potential by a singular one is treated, the expressions for level shifts and widths are obtained. We show, that the physical sense of suggested regularization is that the scattering observables are insensitive to any details of the short range modification of singular potential, if there exists sufficiently strong inelastic short range interaction. In this case the scattering observables are determined by solutions of Schrodinger equation with regularized potential βˆ’(Ξ±sΒ±i0)/rs-(\alpha_{s}\pm i0)/r^{s}. We point out that the developed formalism can be applied for the description of systems with short range annihilation, in particular low energy nucleon-antinucleon scattering.Comment: 10 page
