Patients with underlying lung disease (especially cystic fibrosis) may be at increased risk for severe infections with B. cepacia complex. The manufacturer, Propharma Inc., has recalled lot# K4496 released 11/03 with an expiration date of 10/06. Preliminary molecular epidemiology indicates that isolates related to the strain found in the nasal spray have been recovered from patients in multiple states.CDC is assisting the state of Missouri, investigating several cases of B. cepacia that have been identified in one hospital, to examine the impact of the recalled product on patient safety and the potential spread of B. cepacia within the healthcare setting.2004Oxymetazoline Hydrochloride Recall, 2004BacteriaBurkholderia cepaci

Thursday, January 10, 2002, 19:35 EST (7:35 PM EST)CDCHAN-00068-2002-01-10-UPD-NThe Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's medical epidemiologists have investigated the illness in a postal inspector reported in the current issue of the Journal of the American Osteopathic Association (JAOA). (1) After a thorough review of clinical, laboratory, diagnostic imaging, and serology results related to the case, CDC determined that the illness did not meet the anthrax case definition.CDC 's definition of a confirmed case of anthrax is described as 1) a clinically compatible case of cutaneous, inhalational, or gastrointestinal illness that is laboratory confirmed by isolation of B. anthracis from an affected tissue or site or 2) other laboratory evidence of B. anthracis infection based on at least two supportive laboratory tests. A suspected case of anthrax is defined as 1) a clinically compatible case of illness without isolation of B. anthracis and no alternative diagnosis, but with laboratory evidence of B. anthracis by one supportive laboratory test or 2) a clinically compatible case of anthrax epidemiologically linked to a confirmed environmental exposure, but without corroborative laboratory evidence of B. anthracis infection. (2)On November 18, 2001, CDC held a meeting of clinicians and health department personnel from areas where anthrax cases were identified, infectious disease experts, representatives of professional societies, and experts from federal agencies to discuss the prophylaxis, diagnosis, and treatment of anthrax. (3) The clinical case definitions were reviewed and agreed upon by the experts at this meeting. CDC has no plans to update or to modify the anthrax case definitions at this time.CDC understands that physicians throughout the country have a heightened awareness of suspicious illnesses. CDC is very interested in following up on reports of such illnesses as part of our ongoing surveillance and to better understand anthrax and its effects in exposed persons.Event Type: rule out anthraxContext: general informationEvent Type: Man-madeAgent Type: bacteriaSpecify Agent (Name): not an anthrax caseInternational: noIntentional/Unintentional: intentional2002Anthrax Bioterrorism Event, 2001BacteriaBacillus anthraci
W and Z Boson Cross Section and W Asymmetry at CMS
We report the measurement of the rates and asymmetries of inclusive and
differential production of W and Z vector bosons in pp collision at
=7 TeV. The data consists of 36 collected in the Compact
Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The measured
inclusive cross sections are nb and
nb. The measured inclusive cross
sections and also its ratio of W to Z or to agree with NNLO QCD
cross section calculations and current parton distribution functions (PDFs).
The differential production asymmetry of W boson as a function of the lepton
pseudorapidity in the final state is also measured and compared with various
PDFs.Comment: Proceedings of the DPF-2011 Conference, Providence, RI, August 8-13,

Assortative Marriage and the Effects of Government Homecare Subsidy Programs on Gender Wage and Participation Inequality
We develop a model of the labor market where firms incur an adjustment cost when one of their workers quits, and males and females form households assortatively by skill. We show how this environment can lead to an economy where females earn less and drop out more frequently than equally skilled males in equilibrium, even when males and females constitute ex-ante identical populations. We then examine how different government homecare subsidy schemes may affect such gender inequality in the labor market. We show that the effect of government homecare subsidy schemes on gender inequality depends crucially on the form in which the subsidy is given and to whom it is allocated.Gender Inequality, Discrimination, Subsidized Childcare

Wednesday, October 31, 2001, 13:45 EST (1:45 PM EST)CDCHAN-00049-2001-10-31-ADV-NInterim recommendations, MMWR 50(no 41):893 Oct 19,2001, for postexposure prophylaxis to prevent inhalational anthrax after exposure to B. anthracis spores recommend ciprofloxacin or doxycycline as initial therapy in situations associated with the current bioterrorist attack in the United States.EFFECTIVENESS: There is no evidence which demonstrates that ciprofloxacin is more or less effective than doxycycline for postexposure prophylaxis for prevention of infection with B. anthracisRESISTANCE: Widespread use of any antibiotic will promote resistance. Many common pathogens are already resistant to tetracyclines such as doxycycline. However, ciprofloxacin resistance is not yet common in these same organisms. To preserve the effectiveness of ciprofloxacin against other infections, use of doxycycline for prevention of B. anthracis infection is reasonable. Ciprofloxacin is an effective antimicrobial for a variety of other bacterial infections. Thus, the wide use of this drug in thousands of individuals may lead to increased resistance of other bacterial pathogens to ciprofloxacin and other fluroquinolones, and limit the usefulness of these agents.SIDE EFFECTS: On the basis of side-effect profiles (see below), the history of reactions, or the clinical setting, either doxycycline or ciprofloxacin may be preferable for an individual patient.Event Type: anthrax terrorism eventContext: countermeasures/therapeuticsEvent Type: Man-madeAgent Type: bacteriaSpecify Agent (Name): anthraxInternational: noIntentional/Unintentional: intentional2001Anthrax Bioterrorism Event, 2001BacteriaBacillus anthraci
