Field trial of a 15 Tb/s adaptive and gridless OXC supporting elastic 1000-fold all-optical bandwidth granularity
An adaptive gridless OXC is implemented using a 3D-MEMS optical backplane plus optical modules (sub-systems) that provide elastic spectrum and time switching functionality. The OXC adapts its architecture on demand to fulfill the switching requirements of incoming traffic. The system is implemented in a seven-node network linked by installed fiber and is shown to provide suitable architectures on demand for three scenarios with increasing traffic and switching complexity. In the most complex scenario, signals of mixed bit-rates and modulation formats are successfully switched with flexible per-channel allocation of spectrum, time and space, achieving over 1000-fold bandwidth granularity and 1.5 Tb/s throughput with good end-to-end performance
Why Does China Allow Freer Social Media? Protests Versus Surveillance And Propaganda
In this paper, we document basic facts regarding public debates about controversial political issues on Chinese social media. Our documentation is based on a dataset of 13.2 billion blog posts published on Sina Weibo--the most prominent Chinese microblogging platform--during the 2009-2013 period. Our primary finding is that a shockingly large number of posts on highly sensitive topics were published and circulated on social media. For instance, we find millions of posts discussing protests, and these posts are informative in predicting the occurrence of specific events. We find an even larger number of posts with explicit corruption allegations, and that these posts predict future corruption charges of specific individuals. Our findings challenge a popular view that an authoritarian regime would relentlessly censor or even ban social media. Diamagnetism versus Paramagnetism in charged spin-1 Bose gases
It has been suggested that either diamagnetism or paramagnetism of Bose
gases, due to the charge or spin degrees of freedom respectively, appears
solely to be extraordinarily strong. We investigate magnetic properties of
charged spin-1 Bose gases in external magnetic field, focusing on the
competition between the diamagnetism and paramagnetism, using the Lande-factor
of particles to evaluate the strength of paramagnetic effect. We propose
that a gas with exhibits diamagnetism at all temperatures,
while a gas with always exhibits paramagnetism. Moreover, a gas with
the Lande-factor in between shows a shift from paramagnetism to diamagnetism as
the temperature decreases. The paramagnetic and diamagnetic contributions to
the total magnetization density are also calculated in order to demonstrate

Analysis of measurement errors for a superconducting phase qubit
We analyze several mechanisms leading to errors in a course of measurement of
a superconducting flux-biased phase qubit. Insufficiently long measurement
pulse may lead to nonadiabatic transitions between qubit states and
, before tunneling through a reduced barrier is supposed to distinguish
the qubit states. Finite (though large) ratio of tunneling rates for these
states leads to incomplete discrimination between and .
Insufficiently fast energy relaxation after the tunneling of state may
cause the repopulation of the quantum well in which only the state is
supposed to remain. We analyze these types of measurement errors using
analytical approaches as well as numerical solution of the time-dependent

Continuous quantum feedback of coherent oscillations in a solid-state qubit
We have analyzed theoretically the operation of the Bayesian quantum feedback
of a solid-state qubit, designed to maintain perfect coherent oscillations in
the qubit for arbitrarily long time. In particular, we have studied the
feedback efficiency in presence of dephasing environment and detector
nonideality. Also, we have analyzed the effect of qubit parameter deviations
and studied the quantum feedback control of an energy-asymmetric qubit.Comment: 11 page
Chaotic to ordered state transition of cathode-sheath instabilities in DC glow discharge plasmas
Transition from chaotic to ordered state has been observed during the initial
stage of a discharge in a cylindrical dc glow discharge plasma. Initially it
shows a chaotic behavior but increasing the discharge voltage changes the
characteristics of the discharge glow and shows a period substraction of order
7 period 5 period 3 period 1 period i.e. the system goes to
single mode through odd cycle subtraction. On further increasing the discharge
voltage, the system goes through period doubling, like 1 period 2 period
4 period. On further increasing the voltage, the system goes to stable

Calculation of the Chiral Lagrangian Coefficients from the Underlying Theory of QCD: A Simple Approach
We calculate the coefficients in the chiral Lagrangian approximately from QCD
based on a previous study of deriving the chiral Lagrangian from the first
principles of QCD in which the chiral Lagrangian coefficients are defined in
terms of certain Green's functions in QCD. We first show that, in the large
N(c)-limit, the anomaly part contributions to the coefficients are exactly
cancelled by certain terms in the normal part contributions, and the final
results of the coefficients only concern the remaining normal part
contributions depending on QCD interactions. We then do the calculation in a
simple approach with the approximations of taking the large-N(c) limit, the
leading order in dynamical perturbation theory, and the improved ladder
approximation, thereby the relevant Green's functions are expressed in terms of
the quark self energy. By solving the Schwinger-Dyson equation for the quark
self energy, we obtain the approximate QCD predicted coefficients and the quark

On complex surfaces diffeomorphic to rational surfaces
