Comparison Of Serum Lipid Levels In Periodontal Health And Disease In Systemically Healthy Subjects – A Clinical And Biochemical Study
Aim: To compare the serum lipid levels in systemically healthy subjects with and without periodontal disease and to correlate the results between hyperlipidemia and periodontitis. Material and Methods: A total of 80 subjects of both sexes (42 males and 38 females), in the age group of 35-55 yrs were divided into two groups of 40 each as study and controls. All the patients were evaluated for serum cholesterol, serum triglycerides, LDL and HDL cholesterol. Variables related to high cholesterol levels, including age, sex and body mass index were also evaluated. The dental parameters recorded consisted of probing pocket depth (PPD), community periodontal index (CPI) and periodontal disease index (PDI). Results: Total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides were marginally increased in study group but were not found to be statistically significant (p=0.106, p=0.100 & p=0.199 respectively). Triglycerides showed a positive correlation with CPI and PDI after adjusting for age and disease. However, the correlation of triglycerides with PDI was minimal compared to the correlation of triglyceride with CPI. Conclusion: The findings of this study showed that there was no significant relationship between periodontal disease, regardless of its intensity, and blood lipid levels in the study population
Effects of Charge State and Cationizing Agent on the Electron Capture Dissociation of a Peptide
Electron capture dissociation (ECD) is a promising method for de novo sequencing proteins and peptides and for locating the positions of labile posttranslational modifications and binding sites of noncovalently bound species. We report the ECD of a synthetic peptide containing 10 alanine residues and 6 lysine residues uniformly distributed across the sequence. ECD of the (M + 2H) 2+ produces a limited range of c (c 7 -c 15 ) and z (z 9 -z 15 ) fragment ions, but ECD of higher charge states produces a wider range of c (c 2 -c 15 ) and z (z 2 -z 6 , z 9 -z 15 ) ions. Although mass spectrometry (MS) and tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) have been used to characterize peptides for more than three decades, 1,2 the developments of electrospray ionization (ESI) 3 and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization 4 have dramatically expanded the size and type of molecules amenable to characterization by MS/MS. For example, ESI has been used to form intact gas-phase ions from virus particles (4.0 × 10 7 Da) 5 and DNA molecules as large as 1.2 × 10 8 Da. 6 ESI-MS and ESI-MS/MS experiments can be performed using as little as 10 -18 mol of sample. 7 For these measurements, Fourier transform (FT) MS has the advantages of ultrahigh resolution, multichannel detection, and MS n capabilities. 8,9 Dissociation methods in FTMS, including collisionally activated dissociation (CAD), 10 surface-induced dissociation, 11,12 infrared multiphoton dissociation, 13 and blackbody infrared radiative dissociation, 14,15 have been used to obtain sequence information and locations of posttranslational modifications (PTMs) in biomolecules. With these activation methods, the most labile bonds within an ion are typically cleaved. This often produces incomplete sequence coverage, the loss of PTMs, and a lack of backbone cleavages within regions enclosed by disulfide bridges. Mandibular Mesiodens with Agenesis of Central Incisors (Hypohyperdontia): A Case Report &Review
Supernumerary teeth are defined as those in excess when compared to the normal series. Supernumerary teeth can occur as single, multiples, unilaterally, or bilaterally and in maxilla or mandible or both. The incidence of mandibular mesiodens with agenesis of central incisors is extremely rare. This paper attempts report & review the occurrence of such a rare combination. A 9 year old girl reported to Department of Pediatric & Preventive Dentistry, DAPMRVDC, Bangalore, India, for a routine dental check up. Clinical Examination revealed the presence of a conical tooth in relation to retained Primary central incisor (71, 81) & erupting permanent lateral incisors. Radiographic examination confirmed the presence of a Mesiodens & the agenesis of both permanent mandibular central incisors. Extraction of the mesiodens was carried out followed by orthodontic management
Newer Trends In Local Drug Delivery For Periodontal Problems – A Preview
Elimination or adequate suppression of putative periodontopathic microorganisms in the subgingival microbiota is essential for periodontal healing. Antimicrobial treatments in periodontics range from mechanical debridement of tooth surfaces and home plaque removal to local and systemic delivery of chemical antimicrobial agents. Recent development of science and technology has revolutionized the basic outlook and approach to the problems of periodontal disease. The local delivery of antimicrobial therapy to periodontal pockets has the benefit of administering more drugs at the target site while minimizing the exposure of total body to the drug and the sustained release of antimicrobial in the periodontal pockets. Different drugs used for local delivery are tetracyclines including doxycycline and minocycline, metronidazole and chlorhexidine. The present review throws light on new trends that are been used in the field of local drug delivery system utilising the herbal products and other novel products
Accidental ingestion of foreign object: Systematic review, recommendations and report of a case
AbstractOne of the serious complications during a routine endodontic procedure is accidental ingestion/aspiration of the endodontic instruments, which can happen when proper isolation is not done. There are at present no clear guidelines whether foreign body ingestion in the gastrointestinal tract should be managed conservatively, endoscopically or surgically. A 5year old boy reported to the Department of Pediatric and Preventive Dentistry, D.A. Pandu Memorial R.V. Dental College, Bangalore, India, with a complaint of pain and swelling in the lower right back teeth region. Endodontic therapy was planned for the affected tooth. During the course of treatment the child accidentally swallowed a 21mm 15 size K file. Endoscopy was performed immediately but the instrument could not be retrieved. The instrument passed out uneventfully along with the stools 48h after ingestion.Careful evaluation of the patient immediately after the accident helps in managing the patient effectively along with following the recommended guidelines
