    The electron-phonon processes of the nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond

    Applications of negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond exploit the center's unique optical and spin properties, which at ambient temperature, are predominately governed by electron-phonon interactions. Here, we investigate these interactions at ambient and elevated temperatures by observing the motional narrowing of the center's excited state spin resonances. We determine that the center's Jahn-Teller dynamics are much slower than currently believed and identify the vital role of symmetric phonon modes. Our results have pronounced implications for center's diverse applications (including quantum technology) and for understanding its fundamental properties.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Effect of spin on electron motion in a random magnetic field

    We consider properties of a two-dimensional electron system in a random magnetic field. It is assumed that the magnetic field not only influences orbital electron motion but also acts on the electron spin. For calculations, we suggest a new trick replacing the initial Hamiltonian by a Dirac Hamiltonian. This allows us to do easily a perturbation theory and derive a supermatrix sigma model, which takes a form of the conventional sigma model with the unitary symmetry. Using this sigma model we calculate several correlation functions including a spin-spin correlation function. As compared to the model without spin, we get different expressions for the single-particle lifetime and the transport time.     Acellular dermal regeneration template for soft tissue reconstruction of the digits.

    PURPOSE: Trauma to the digits often leaves soft tissue defects with exposed bone, joint, and/or tendon that require soft tissue replacement. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of acellular dermal regeneration template combined with full-thickness skin grafting for soft tissue reconstruction in digital injuries with soft tissue defects. METHODS: Acellular dermal regeneration template was used to reconstruct digital injuries with exposed bone, joint, tendon, and/or hardware not amenable to treatment with healing by secondary intention, rotation flaps, or primary skin grafts. Acellular dermal regeneration template was applied to 21 digits in 17 patients. Nineteen digits had exposed bone, 8 digits had exposed tendon, 6 digits had exposed joints, and 2 digits had exposed hardware. The acellular dermal regeneration template was sutured over the soft tissue defect. Over 3 weeks, a neodermis formed. The superficial silicone layer of the acellular dermal regeneration template was removed, and the digits received full-thickness epidermal autografting with cotton bolster. RESULTS: The duration of postoperative follow-up extended to a minimum of 12 months. For the injury sites where acellular dermal regeneration template was applied, the total area of application ranged from 1 cm(2) to 24 cm(2), with the largest individual site measuring 12 cm(2). Twenty of 21 digits demonstrated 100% incorporation of the acellular dermal regeneration template skin substitute. One digit that had sustained multilevel trauma developed necrosis requiring revision amputation. Full-thickness epidermal autografting was performed an average of 24 days after acellular dermal regeneration template skin substitute application and demonstrated a 100% take in 16 of 20 digits and partial graft loss of 15% to 25% in 4 of 20 digits that did not require further treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Acellular dermal regeneration template combined with secondary full-thickness skin grafting is an effective method of skin reconstruction in complex digital injuries with soft tissue defects involving exposed bone, tendon, and joint. The neodermis increases tissue bulk and facilitates epidermal autografting with digital injuries that otherwise would require flap coverage or skeletal shortening of the digit.     Reweighting of the form factors in exclusive B --> X ell nu decays

    A form factor reweighting technique has been elaborated to permit relatively easy comparisons between different form factor models applied to exclusive B --> X l nu decays. The software tool developped for this purpose is described. It can be used with any event generator, three of which were used in this work: ISGW2, PHSP and FLATQ2, a new powerful generator. The software tool allows an easy and reliable implementation of any form factor model. The tool has been fully validated with the ISGW2 form factor hypothesis. The results of our present studies indicate that the combined use of the FLATQ2 generator and the form factor reweighting tool should play a very important role in future exclusive |Vub| measurements, with largely reduced errors.Comment: accepted for publication by EPJ

    Unequal Partnerships in Higher Education: Pedagogic Innovations in an Electronics within Physics Degree Course

    This cross-European research partnership reports on supporting pro-active learning and teaching. The two-part project firstly explored student beliefs about electronics within a physics degree and secondly, the use of peer assessment of a Mathematica notebook to develop understandings of standards and quality. Student beliefs were explored because of the negative perceptions tutors thought students brought to the Engineering course within the Physics degree. The results showed that tutors’ fears were unfounded and that the students were highly motivated. Secondly, through peer assessment of a notebook, students developed critical understandings of standards and quality. Generally, students valued the content support and appreciated both the work of their peer and how this helped their own understanding. Esta investigación realizada por un partenariado transeuropeo se centra en el apoyo proactivo de la enseñanza y el aprendizaje en la educación superior. Este proyecto consta de dos partes. Primero se exploraron las creencias de los estudiantes sobre la electrónica en el grado de Física para, después, usar la evaluación por pares del manual Mathematica para desarrollar la comprensión de los estandares y calidad. Las creencias de los estudiantes se exploraron teniendo en cuenta las percepciones negativas que los tutores pensaban que tenían los estudianties del curso de Ingeniería en el grado de Física. Los resultados destacaron que los miedos de los tutores eran infundados y que los estudiantes se mostraban altamente motivados. Segundo, a través de la evaluación a pares del manual, el alumnado desarrolló una comprensión crítica de los estandares y su calidad. Generalmente, el alumnado valoró el apoyo sobre el contenido y apreció tanto el trabajo de sus compañeros y como éste les había ayudado en su comprensión

    Comment on "Antilocalization in a 2D Electron Gas in a Random Magnetic Field"

    In a recent Letter, Taras-Semchuk and Efetov reconsider the problem of electron localization in a random magnetic field in two dimensions. They claim that due to the long-range nature of the vector potential correlations an additional term appears in the effective field theory (σ\sigma-model) of the problem, leading to delocalization at the one-loop level. This calls into question the results of earlier analytical studies, where the random magnetic field problem was mapped onto the conventional unitary-class σ\sigma-model, implying that the leading quantum correction is of two-loop order and of a localizing nature. We show in this Comment, however, that the new term in fact does not exist and was erroneously obtained by Taras-Semchuk and Efetov because of an inconsistent treatment violating gauge invariance.Comment: 1 page, 2 figure

    Resonant Dynamical Friction: Analytical Description

    We derive an analytical model for the so-called phenomenon of `resonant dynamical friction', where a disc of stars around a super-massive black hole interacts with a massive perturber, so as to align its inclination with the disc's orientation. We show that it stems from singular behaviour of the orbit-averaged equations of motion, which leads to a rapid alignment of the argument of the ascending node Ω\Omega of each of the disc stars, with that of the perturber, Ωp\Omega_{\rm p}, with a phase-difference of 90∘90^\circ, for all stars whose maximum possible Ω˙\dot{\Omega} (maximised over all values of Ω\Omega for all the disc stars), is greater than Ω˙p\dot{\Omega}_{\rm p}; this corresponds approximately to all stars whose semi-major axes are less than twice that of the perturber. This persists until the perturber enters the disc. The predictions of this model agree with a suite of numerical NN-body simulations which we perform to explore this phenomenon, for a wide range of initial conditions, masses, \emph{etc.}, and are an instance of a general phenomenon.     Field Theory of Mesoscopic Fluctuations in Superconductor/Normal-Metal Systems

    Thermodynamic and transport properties of normal disordered conductors are strongly influenced by the proximity of a superconductor. A cooperation between mesoscopic coherence and Andreev scattering of particles from the superconductor generates new types of interference phenomena. We introduce a field theoretic approach capable of exploring both averaged properties and mesoscopic fluctuations of superconductor/normal-metal systems.     We prove that a topological Clifford semigroup SS is metrizable if and only if SS is an MM-space and the set E={e∈S:ee=e}E=\{e\in S:ee=e\} of idempotents of SS is a metrizable GδG_\delta-set in SS.
