A Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation Polarimeter Using Superconducting Bearings
Measurements of the polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB)
radiation are expected to significantly increase our understanding of the early
universe. We present a design for a CMB polarimeter in which a cryogenically
cooled half wave plate rotates by means of a high-temperature superconducting
(HTS) bearing. The design is optimized for implementation in MAXIPOL, a
balloon-borne CMB polarimeter. A prototype bearing, consisting of commercially
available ring-shaped permanent magnet and an array of YBCO bulk HTS material,
has been constructed. We measured the coefficient of friction as a function of
several parameters including temperature between 15 and 80 K, rotation
frequency between 0.3 and 3.5 Hz, levitation distance between 6 and 10 mm, and
ambient pressure between 10^{-7} and 1 torr. The low rotational drag of the HTS
bearing allows rotations for long periods of time with minimal input power and
negligible wear and tear thus making this technology suitable for a future

The Impact of Late-Career Health and Employment Shocks on Social Security and Other Wealth
About one-quarter of workers age 51 to 55 in 1992 developed health-related work limitations and about one-fifth were laid off from their jobs before age 62. Although late-career health and employment shocks often derail retirement savings plans, Social Security's disability insurance, spouse and survivor benefits, and progressive benefit formula provide important protections. In fact, health shocks increase Social Security's lifetime value, primarily because the system's disability insurance allows some disabled workers to collect benefits before age 62. However, if the system's disability insurance program did not exist, the onset of health-related work limitations would substantially reduce Social Security wealth
Coolant passage heat transfer with rotation
In current and advanced gas turbine engines, increased speeds, pressures and temperatures are used to reduce specific fuel consumption and increase thrust/weight ratios. Hence, the turbine airfoils are subjected to increased heat loads escalating the cooling requirements to satisfy life goals. The efficient use of cooling air requires that the details of local geometry and flow conditions be adequately modeled to predict local heat loads and the corresponding heat transfer coefficients. The objective of this program is to develop a heat transfer and pressure drop data base, computational fluid dynamic techniques and correlations for multi-pass rotating coolant passages with and without flow turbulators. The experimental effort is focused on the simulation of configurations and conditions expected in the blades of advanced aircraft high pressure turbines. With the use of this data base, the effects of Coriolis and buoyancy forces on the coolant side flow can be included in the design of turbine blades

Open charm tomography of cold nuclear matter
We study the relative contribution of partonic sub-processes to D meson
production and D meson-triggered inclusive di-hadrons to lowest order in
perturbative QCD. While gluon fusion dominates the creation of large angle
DD-bar pairs, charm on light parton scattering determines the yield of single
inclusive D mesons. The distinctly different non-perturbative fragmentation of
c quarks into D mesons versus the fragmentation of quarks and gluons into light
hadrons results in a strong transverse momentum dependence of anticharm content
of the away-side charm-triggered jet. In p+A reactions, we calculate and resum
the coherent nuclear-enhanced power corrections from the final state partonic
scattering in the medium. We find that single and double inclusive open charm
production can be suppressed as much as the yield of neutral pions from
dynamical high-twist shadowing. Effects of energy loss in p+A collisions are
also investigated phenomenologically and may lead to significantly weaker
transverse momentum dependence of the nuclear attenuation.Comment: 24 pages, 21 figure
Performance management system enhancement and maintenance
The research described in this report concludes a two-year effort to develop a Performance Management System (PMS) for the NCC computers. PMS provides semi-automated monthly reports to NASA and contractor management on the status and performance of the NCC computers in the TDRSS program. Throughout 1984, PMS was tested, debugged, extended, and enhanced. Regular PMS monthly reports were produced and distributed. PMS continues to operate at the NCC under control of Bendix Corp. personnel
Blood volume changes
Analysis of radionuclide volume determinations made for the crewmembers of selected Gemini and Apollo missions showed that orbital spaceflight has an effect on red cell mass. Because the methods and the protocol developed for earlier flights were used for the crews of the three Skylab missions, direct comparisons are possible. After each Skylab mission, decreases were found in crewmembers' red cell masses. The mean red cell mass decrease of 11 percent or 232 milliliters was approximately equal to the 10 percent mean red cell mass decrease of the Apollo 14 to 17 crewmembers. The red cell mass drop was greatest and the postrecovery reticulocyte response least for crewmembers of the 28-day Skylab 2 mission. Analyses of data from the red cell mass determinations indicate that the red cell mass drops occurred in the first 30 days of flight and that a gradual recovery of the red cell mass deficits began approximately 60 days after launch. The beginning of red cell mass regeneration during the Skylab 4 flight may explain the higher postmission reticulocyte counts
