Magnetically actuated tuning method for Gunn oscillators
A tunable microwave generator based on the Gunn effect is disclosed. The generator includes a semiconductor material which exhibits the Gunn effect when current flows between anode and cathode end contacts. The material has a plurality of sides each with a scratch at a different distance from the anode contact. A magnetic field is produced by a magnet placed about the semiconductor field. The Lorentz force produced as a function of the current flow and the magnetic field drive the electrons to the surface of one of the sides to cause nucleation to occur at the scratch. A domain formed thereat travels to the anode contact to provide pulses at a frequency which is related to the distance between the scratch and the anode contact
Analysis framework for the interaction between lean construction and building information modelling
Building with Building Information Modelling (BIM) changes design and production processes. But can BIM be used to support process changes designed according to lean production and lean construction principles? To begin to answer this question we provide a conceptual analysis of the interaction of lean construction and BIM for improving construction. This was investigated by compiling a detailed listing of lean construction principles and BIM functionalities which are relevant from this perspective. These were drawn from a detailed literature survey. A research framework for analysis of the interaction between lean and BIM was then compiled. The goal of the framework is to both guide and stimulate research; as such, the
approach adopted up to this point is constructive. Ongoing research has identified 55 such interactions, the majority of which show positive synergy between the two
Local tunneling spectroscopy of the electron-doped cuprate Sm1.85Ce0.15CuO4
We present local tunneling spectroscopy in the optimally electron-doped
cuprate Sm2-xCexCuO4 x=0.15. A clear signature of the superconducting gap is
observed with an amplitude ranging from place to place and from sample to
sample (Delta~3.5-6meV). Another spectroscopic feature is simultaneously
observed at high energy above \pm 50meV. Its energy scale and temperature
evolution is found to be compatible with previous photoemission and optical
experiments. If interpreted as the signature of antiferromagnetic order in the
samples, these results could suggest the coexistence on the local scale of
antiferromagnetism and superconductivity on the electron-doped side of cuprate
superconductors
\u27Traffic-light\u27 nutrition labelling and \u27junk-food\u27 tax : a modelled comparison of cost-effectiveness for obesity prevention
Introduction: Cost-effectiveness analyses are important tools in efforts to prioritise interventions for obesity prevention.Modelling facilitates evaluation of multiple scenarios with varying assumptions. This study compares the cost-effectiveness ofconservative scenarios for two commonly proposed policy-based interventions: front-of-pack ‘traffic-light’ nutrition labelling(traffic-light labelling) and a tax on unhealthy foods (‘junk-food’ tax).Methods: For traffic-light labelling, estimates of changes in energy intake were based on an assumed 10% shift in consumptiontowards healthier options in four food categories (breakfast cereals, pastries, sausages and preprepared meals) in 10% of adults. For the ‘junk-food’ tax, price elasticities were used to estimate a change in energy intake in response to a 10% price increase in seven food categories (including soft drinks, confectionery and snack foods). Changes in population weight and body mass index by sex were then estimated based on these changes in population energy intake, along with subsequent impacts on disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). Associated resource use was measured and costed using pathway analysis, based on a health sector perspective (with some industry costs included). Costs and health outcomes were discounted at 3%. The cost-effectiveness of each intervention was modelled for the 2003 Australian adult population.Results: Both interventions resulted in reduced mean weight (traffic-light labelling: 1.3 kg (95% uncertainty interval (UI): 1.2;1.4); ‘junk-food’ tax: 1.6 kg (95% UI: 1.5; 1.7)); and DALYs averted (traffic-light labelling: 45 100 (95% UI: 37 700; 60 100);‘junk-food’ tax: 559 000 (95% UI: 459 500; 676 000)). Cost outlays were AUD81 million (95% UI: 44.7; 108.0) for traffic-lightlabelling and AUD18 million (95% UI: 14.4; 21.6) for ‘junk-food’ tax. Cost-effectiveness analysis showed both interventions were‘dominant’ (effective and cost-saving).Conclusion: Policy-based population-wide interventions such as traffic-light nutrition labelling and taxes on unhealthy foods arelikely to offer excellent ‘value for money’ as obesity prevention measures.<br /
Monitoring the impacts of trade agreements on food environments
The liberalization of international trade and foreign direct investment through
multilateral, regional and bilateral agreements has had profound implications
for the structure and nature of food systems, and therefore, for the availability,
nutritional quality, accessibility, price and promotion of foods in different
locations. Public health attention has only relatively recently turned to the links
between trade and investment agreements, diets and health, and there is currently
no systematic monitoring of this area. This paper reviews the available evidence on the links between trade agreements, food environments and diets from an obesity and non-communicable disease (NCD) perspective. Based on the key issues identified through the review, the paper outlines an approach for monitoring the potential impact of trade agreements on food environments and
obesity/NCD risks. The proposed monitoring approach encompasses a set of guiding principles, recommended procedures for data collection and analysis, and quantifiable ‘minimal’, ‘expanded’ and ‘optimal’ measurement indicators to be tailored to national priorities, capacity and resources. Formal risk assessment processes of existing and evolving trade and investment agreements,
which focus on their impacts on food environments will help inform the development of healthy trade policy, strengthen domestic nutrition and health

Quasiparticle spectrum of the cuprate BiSrCaCuO: Possible connection to the phase diagram
We previously introduced [T. Cren et al., Europhys. Lett. 52, 203 (2000)] an
energy-dependant gap function, , that fits the unusual shape of the
quasiparticle (QP) spectrum for both BiSrCaCuO and YBaCuO. A simple
anti-resonance in accounts for the pronounced QP peaks in the
density of states, at an energy , and the dip feature at a higher
energy, . Here we go a step further : our gap function is consistent
with the () phase diagram, where is the carrier density. For large QP
energies (), the total spectral gap is , where is tied to the condensation
energy. From the available data, a simple -dependance of and
is found, in particular .
These two distinct energy scales of the superconducting state are interpreted
by comparing with the normal and pseudogap states. The various forms of the QP
density of states, as well as the spectral function , are discussed
Size Acceptance: A Discursive Analysis of Online Blogs

Under embargo until 25 May 2019.Dominant discourses of “fatness” and “fat people” have implications for physical and mental health. Although alternative discourses such as “size acceptance” exist, there has been little consideration of the ways in which these alternative arguments (and speakers) may be positioned to be heard. Using a discursive thematic analysis, the authors demonstrate that size acceptance online bloggers have created a community online that enables them to persuasively provide alternative claims to “expertise,” which positions their views as credible and legitimate alternatives to those of more established authority figures—such as health professionals. This has implications not only for the lived experience of fat people, but also for researchers by emphasizing the importance of exploring not just what is said, but how, if we are to understand how different articulated positions are to be persuasive.Peer reviewe
Real-Time Mobile Personalized Simulations of Impaired Colour Vision
Colour forms an essential element of day-to-day life for most people, but at least 5% of the world have Impaired Colour Vision (ICV) - seeing fewer colours than everyone else. Those with typical colour vision find it difficult to understand how people with ICV perceive colour, leading to misunderstanding and challenges for people with ICV. To help improve understanding, personalized simulations of ICV have been developed, but are computationally demanding (so limited to static images), which limits the value of these simulations. To address this, we extended personalized ICV simulations to work in real time on a mobile device to allow people with typical colour vision greater freedom in exploring ICV. To validate our approach, we compared our real-time simulation technique to an existing adjustable simulation technique and found general agreement between the two. We then deployed three real-time personalized ICV simulations to nine people with typical colour vision, encouraging them to take photos of interesting colour situations. In just over one week, participants recorded over 450 real-world images of situations where their simulation presented a distinct challenge for their respective ICV participant. Through a questionnaire and discussion of photos with participants, we found that our solution provides a valuable mechanism for building understanding of ICV for people with typical colour vision

This paper offers a brief consideration of how narrative, in the form of people‟s own stories, potentially figures in health and social care provision as part of the impulse towards patient-centred care. The rise of the epistemological legitimacy of patients‟ stories is sketched here. The paper draws upon relevant literature and original writing to consider the ways in which stories can mislead as well as illuminate the process of making individual treatment care plans
