    Compact magneto-optical sources of slow atoms

    Three different configurations of compact magneto-optical sources of slow Rb atoms(LVIS, 2D(+)-MOT and 2D-MOT) were compared with each other at fixed geometry of cooling laser beams. A precise control of the intensity balances between the four separate transverse cooling laser beams provided a total continuous flux of cold atoms from the LVIS and 2D(+)-MOT sources about 8x10^9 atoms/s at total laser power of 60 mW. The flux was measured directly from the loading rate of a 3D-MOT, placed 34 cm downstream from the sources. Average velocities of the cooled atomic beam for the LVIS and 2D(+)-MOT sources were about 8.5 m/s and 11 m/s respectively. An essential advantage of the compact magneto-optical sources is that their background flux of thermal atoms is two to three orders of the magnitude smaller than the flux of slow atoms.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures. to be published in Optics Communication

    Nonlinear optical response of a gold surface in the visible range: A study by two-color sum-frequency generation spectroscopy. II. Model for metal nonlinear susceptibility

    We present a modeling of the nonlinear optical response of a metal surface in order to account for recent experimental results from two-color Sum-Frequency Generation experiments on gold. The model allows calculating the surface and bulk contributions, and explicitly separates free and bound electron terms. Contrary to the other contributions, the perpendicular surface component is strongly model-dependent through the surface electron density profiles. We consider three electron density schemes at the surface, with free and bound electrons overlapping or spilling out of the bulk, for its calculation. The calculated SFG signals from the metal rely only on bulk quantities and do not need an explicit definition of the density profiles. In the particular case of gold, when the free electrons overlap with the bound ones or spill out of the bulk, the free electron response completely dominates through the perpendicular surface terms. When the bound electrons spill out, the situation is more balanced, still in favor of the free electrons, with lower amplitudes and different dispersion lineshapes. As for silver, the free electron contributions dominate, and the calculated slow amplitude growth from blue to red follows the experimental trends

    Balanced Allocations: A Simple Proof for the Heavily Loaded Case

    We provide a relatively simple proof that the expected gap between the maximum load and the average load in the two choice process is bounded by (1+o(1))loglogn(1+o(1))\log \log n, irrespective of the number of balls thrown. The theorem was first proven by Berenbrink et al. Their proof uses heavy machinery from Markov-Chain theory and some of the calculations are done using computers. In this manuscript we provide a significantly simpler proof that is not aided by computers and is self contained. The simplification comes at a cost of weaker bounds on the low order terms and a weaker tail bound for the probability of deviating from the expectation

    Tumbleweeds and airborne gravitational noise sources for LIGO

    Gravitational-wave detectors are sensitive not only to astrophysical gravitational waves, but also to the fluctuating Newtonian gravitational forces of moving masses in the ground and air around the detector. This paper studies the gravitational effects of density perturbations in the atmosphere, and from massive airborne objects near the detector. These effects were previously considered by Saulson; in this paper I revisit these phenomena, considering transient atmospheric shocks, and the effects of sound waves or objects colliding with the ground or buildings around the test masses. I also consider temperature perturbations advected past the detector as a source of gravitational noise. I find that the gravitational noise background is below the expected noise floor even of advanced interferometric detectors, although only by an order of magnitude for temperature perturbations carried along turbulent streamlines. I also find that transient shockwaves in the atmosphere could potentially produce large spurious signals, with signal-to-noise ratios in the hundreds in an advanced interferometric detector. These signals could be vetoed by means of acoustic sensors outside of the buildings. Massive wind-borne objects such as tumbleweeds could also produce gravitational signals with signal-to-noise ratios in the hundreds if they collide with the interferometer buildings, so it may be necessary to build fences preventing such objects from approaching within about 30m of the test masses.Comment: 15 pages, 10 PostScript figures, uses REVTeX4.cls and epsfig.st

    Motional sidebands and direct measurement of the cooling rate in the resonance fluorescence of a single trapped ion

    Resonance fluorescence of a single trapped ion is spectrally analyzed using a heterodyne technique. Motional sidebands due to the oscillation of the ion in the harmonic trap potential are observed in the fluorescence spectrum. From the width of the sidebands the cooling rate is obtained and found to be in agreement with the theoretical prediction.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures.     Loading a vapor cell magneto-optic trap using light-induced atom desorption

    Low intensity white light was used to increase the loading rate of 87^{87}Rb atoms into a vapor cell magneto-optic trap by inducing non-thermal desorption of Rb atoms from the stainless steel walls of the vapor cell. An increased Rb partial pressure reached a new equilibrium value in less than 10 seconds after switching on the broadband light source. After the source was turned off, the partial pressure returned to its previous value in 1/e1/e times as short as 10 seconds.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure

    We examine the role of magnetic dipoles in single and coupled pairs of metallic split-ring resonators by numerically computing their magnitude and examining their relative contributions to the scattering cross section. We demonstrate that magnetic dipoles can strongly influence the scattering cross section along particular directions. It is also found that the magnetic dipole parallel to the incident magnetic field and/or high-order multipoles may play a significant role in the linear response of coupled split-ring resonators.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, 1 tabl

    The problem of shot selection in basketball

    In basketball, every time the offense produces a shot opportunity the player with the ball must decide whether the shot is worth taking. In this paper, I explore the question of when a team should shoot and when they should pass up the shot by considering a simple theoretical model of the shot selection process, in which the quality of shot opportunities generated by the offense is assumed to fall randomly within a uniform distribution. I derive an answer to the question "how likely must the shot be to go in before the player should take it?", and show that this "lower cutoff" for shot quality ff depends crucially on the number nn of shot opportunities remaining (say, before the shot clock expires), with larger nn demanding that only higher-quality shots should be taken. The function f(n)f(n) is also derived in the presence of a finite turnover rate and used to predict the shooting rate of an optimal-shooting team as a function of time. This prediction is compared to observed shooting rates from the National Basketball Association (NBA), and the comparison suggests that NBA players tend to wait too long before shooting and undervalue the probability of committing a turnover.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures; comparison to NBA data adde
