Effective potentials for atom-atom interaction at low temperatures
We discuss the concept and design of effective atom-atom potentials that
accurately describe any physical processes involving only states around the
threshold. The existence of such potentials gives hope to a quantitative, and
systematic, understanding of quantum few-atom and quantum many-atom systems at
relatively low temperatures.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Life cycle assessment of white roof and sedum-tray garden roof for office buildings in China
White roof (WR) and Sedum lineare tray garden roof (STGR) have been convinced to improve the energy-efficiency and provide various benefits for conventional impervious grey roofs. Some national and local standards have standardized and recommended these technologies in existing building retrofits, however, they do not include assessment and choice of a particular roof retrofit in different climates. This paper presents a 40-year life-cycle cost analysis (LCCA) of an office building roof retrofitted by adding either WR or STGR over an existing grey roof in five cities, located in four Chinese climate zones. The LCCA find that the WR retrofits exhibit positive life-cycle net savings (NS) in warm winter zones, ranging 5.7–35.1 CNY/m 2 , and STGR retrofits have negative NS of -81.3– -16.7 CNY/m 2 in all climate zones. The NS of both WR and STGR generally tend to improve as one moves from the coldest cities to the warmest cities. LCCA results suggest that adding new building codes concerning crediting or prescribing WR and STGR retrofits into office buildings with grey roofs in hot summer climate zones and warm winter zone in China, respectively. And featured by more specific requirements, the localized Technical Norms help promote the implementation of new building codes
Asymptotic SER and Outage Probability of MIMO MRC in Correlated Fading
This letter derives the asymptotic symbol error rate (SER) and outage
probability of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) maximum ratio combining
(MRC) systems. We consider Rayleigh fading channels with both transmit and
receive spatial correlation. Our results are based on new asymptotic
expressions which we derive for the p.d.f. and c.d.f. of the maximum eigenvalue
of positive-definite quadratic forms in complex Gaussian matrices. We prove
that spatial correlation does not affect the diversity order, but that it
reduces the array gain and hence increases the SER in the high SNR regime.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures, to appear in IEEE Signal Processing Letter
On the Triality Theory for a Quartic Polynomial Optimization Problem
This paper presents a detailed proof of the triality theorem for a class of
fourth-order polynomial optimization problems. The method is based on linear
algebra but it solves an open problem on the double-min duality left in 2003.
Results show that the triality theory holds strongly in a tri-duality form if
the primal problem and its canonical dual have the same dimension; otherwise,
both the canonical min-max duality and the double-max duality still hold
strongly, but the double-min duality holds weakly in a symmetrical form. Four
numerical examples are presented to illustrate that this theory can be used to
identify not only the global minimum, but also the largest local minimum and
local maximum.Comment: 16 pages, 1 figure; J. Industrial and Management Optimization, 2011.

Many-body approach to low-lying collective excitations in a BEC approaching collapse
An approximate many-body theory incorporating two-body correlations has been
employed to calculate low-lying collective multipole frequencies in a
Bose-Einstein condensate containing bosons, for different values of the
interaction parameter . Significant difference
from the variational estimate of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation has been found
near the collapse region. This is attributed to two-body correlations and
finite range attraction of the realistic interatomic interaction. A large
deviation from the hydrodynamic model is also seen for the second monopole
breathing mode and the quadrupole mode for large positive .Comment: 8 pages, 2 figure
Length-dependent oscillations of the conductance through atomic chains: The importance of electronic correlations
We calculate the conductance of atomic chains as a function of their length.
Using the Density Matrix Renormalization Group algorithm for a many-body model
which takes into account electron-electron interactions and the shape of the
contacts between the chain and the leads, we show that length-dependent
oscillations of the conductance whose period depends on the electron density in
the chain can result from electron-electron scattering alone. The amplitude of
these oscillations can increase with the length of the chain, in contrast to
the result from approaches which neglect the interactions.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure
Entropy in the NUT-Kerr-Newman Black Holes Due to an Arbitrary Spin Field
Membrane method is used to compute the entropy of the NUT-Kerr-Newman black
holes. It is found that even though the Euler characteristic is greater than
two, the Bekenstein-Hawking area law is still satisfied. The formula relating the entropy and the Euler characteristic becomes inapplicable for
non-extreme four dimensional NUT-Kerr-Newman black holes
A laser-driven target of high-density nuclear polarized hydrogen gas
We report the best figure-of-merit achieved for an internal nuclear polarized
hydrogen gas target and a Monte Carlo simulation of spin-exchange optical
pumping. The dimensions of the apparatus were optimized using the simulation
and the experimental results were in good agreement with the simulation. The
best result achieved for this target was 50.5% polarization with 58.2% degree
of dissociation of the sample beam exiting the storage cell at a hydrogen flow
rate of atoms/s.Comment: Accepted as a Rapid Communication article in Phys. Rev.
Arbitrary Dimensional Schwarzschild-FRW Black Holes
The metric of arbitrary dimensional Schwarzschild black hole in the
background of Friedman-Robertson-Walker universe is presented in the cosmic
coordinates system. In particular, the arbitrary dimensional Schwarzschild-de
Sitter metric is rewritten in the Schwarzschild coordinates system and basing
on which the even more generalized higher dimensional Schwarzschild-de Sitter
metric with another extra dimensions is found. The generalized solution shows
that the cosmological constant may roots in the extra dimensions of space.Comment: 10 page
