    Equilibrium orbit analysis in a free-electron laser with a coaxial wiggler

    An analysis of single-electron orbits in combined coaxial wiggler and axial guide magnetic fields is presented. Solutions of the equations of motion are developed in a form convenient for computing orbital velocity components and trajectories in the radially dependent wiggler. Simple analytical solutions are obtained in the radially-uniform-wiggler approximation and a formula for the derivative of the axial velocity vv_{\|} with respect to Lorentz factor γ\gamma is derived. Results of numerical computations are presented and the characteristics of the equilibrium orbits are discussed. The third spatial harmonic of the coaxial wiggler field gives rise to group IIIIII orbits which are characterized by a strong negative mass regime.Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, to appear in phys. rev.

    Consistent Quantum Counterfactuals

    An analysis using classical stochastic processes is used to construct a consistent system of quantum counterfactual reasoning. When applied to a counterfactual version of Hardy's paradox, it shows that the probabilistic character of quantum reasoning together with the ``one framework'' rule prevents a logical contradiction, and there is no evidence for any mysterious nonlocal influences. Counterfactual reasoning can support a realistic interpretation of standard quantum theory (measurements reveal what is actually there) under appropriate circumstances.Comment: Minor modifications to make it agree with published version.     A gauge-symmetric approach to effective Lagrangians is described with special emphasis on derivations of effective low-energy Lagrangians from QCD. The examples we discuss are based on exact rewritings of cut-off QCD in terms of new collective degrees of freedom. These cut-off Lagrangians are thus ``effective'' in the sense that they explicitly contain some of the physical long-distance degrees of freedom from the outset.(Talk presented by P.H.     Proton Decay and Related Processes in Unified Models with Gauged Baryon Number:

    In unification models based on SU(15) or SU(16), baryon number is part of the gauge symmetry, broken spontaneously. In such models, we discuss various scenarios of important baryon number violating processes like proton decay and neutron-antineutron oscillation. Our analysis depends on the effective operator method, and covers many variations of symmetry breaking, including different intermediate groups and different Higgs boson content. We discuss processes mediated by gauge bosons and Higgs bosons parallely. We show how accidental global or discrete symmetries present in the full gauge invariant Lagrangian restrict baryon number violating processes in these models. In all cases, we find that baryon number violating interactions are sufficiently suppressed to allow grand unification at energies much lower than the usual 101610^{16} GeV.Comment: (32 pages LATEX) [DOE-ER\,40757-022, CPP-93-22] {Small changes made and two references added.     Cosmological Einstein-Yang-Mills equations

    We use a systematic construction method for invariant connections on homogeneous spaces to find the Einstein-SU(n)-Yang-Mills equations for Friedmann-Robertson-Walker and locally rotationally symmetric homogeneous cosmologies. These connections depend on the choice of a homomorphism from the isotropy group into the gauge group. We consider here the cases of the gauge group SU(n) and SO(n) where these homomorphisms correspond to unitary or orthogonal representations of the isotropy group. For some of the simpler cases the full system of the evolution equations are derived, for others we only determine the number of dynamical variables that remain after some mild fixing of the gauge.Comment: 28 pages, uses amsmath,amsthm,amssymb,epsfig,verbatim, minor correction
