    Prenatal programming of postnatal obesity: fetal nutrition and the regulation of leptin synthesis and secretion before birth

    Exposure to either an increased or decreased level of intrauterine nutrition can result in an increase in adiposity and in circulating leptin concentrations in later life. In animals such as the sheep and pig in which fat is deposited before birth, leptin is synthesised in fetal adipose tissue and is present in the fetal circulation throughout late gestation. In the sheep a moderate increase or decrease in the level of maternal nutrition does not alter fetal plasma leptin concentrations, but there is evidence that chronic fetal hyperglycaemia and hyperinsulinaemia increase fetal fat mass and leptin synthesis within fetal fat depots. Importantly, there is a positive relationship between the relative mass of the ‘unilocular’ component of fetal perirenal and interscapular adipose tissue and circulating fetal leptin concentrations in the sheep. Thus, as in the neonate and adult, circulating leptin concentrations may be a signal of fat mass in fetal life. There is also evidence that leptin can act to regulate the lipid storage, leptin synthetic capacity and potential thermogenic functions of fat before birth. Thus, leptin may act as a signal of energy supply and have a ‘lipostatic’ role before birth. Future studies are clearly required to determine whether the intrauterine and early postnatal nutrient environment programme the endocrine feedback loop between adipose tissue and the central and peripheral neuroendocrine systems that regulate energy balance, resulting in an enhanced risk of obesity in adult life.I.     Microstructural imaging of high repetition rate ultrafast laser written LiTaO<inf>3</inf> waveguides

    The microstructural changes associated with the formation of lithium tantalate waveguides after high repetition rate ultrafast laser inscription has been investigated by confocal micro-Raman experiments. While the laser beam focal volume is characterized by significant lattice damage, no reduction of Raman mode strength has been observed at the guiding region, suggesting the preservation of the nonlinear optical coefficient in the waveguide. A general blueshift of the Raman modes has been observed at the guiding region, suggesting lattice compression as the dominant mechanism of waveguide formation. © 2009 American Institute of Physics

    High repetition rate UV ultrafast laser inscription of buried channel waveguides in Sapphire: Fabrication and fluorescence imaging via ruby R lines

    We report on the fabrication of buried cannel waveguides in Sapphire crystals by 250-kHz high repetition rate ultrafast laser inscription with 385 nm pulses. The propagation properties of the waveguides were studied as a function of the writing conditions. The micro-fluorescence analysis of the R lines generated by trace Cr3+ dopant in Sapphire is used to elucidate the micro-structural modifications induced in the crystal network. It is revealed that waveguide has been formed due to local dilatation of the Sapphire network generated in the surroundings of the focal volume. The refractive index increment due to the dilatation induced electronic polarizability enhancement has been estimated to be of the order of Δn ≈10-4. © 2009 Optical Society of America

    Lessons Learned About Developing and Coordinating an Instruction Program with Freshman Composition

    In the Spring of 2001, the Oregon State University Libraries began planning for a collaboration with the university\u27s freshman composition program. In implementing this project, with no additional library resources, and with the majority of library faculty less experienced in working with freshman students, the coordinators of the program learned numerous lessons which highlighted both the steps needed in initiating and maintaining a new instruction program, and the functions and competencies vital to providing instructional leadership and coordination in an academic library. The following case study describes the process that the coordinators of this instruction program followed, and will discuss the important role that library instruction coordinators have to play in starting a new program of library instruction

    Ultrafast laser fabrication of Bragg waveguides in chalcogenide glass

    Bragg waveguides are fundamental components in photonic integrated circuits and are particularly interesting for mid-IR applications in high index, highly nonlinear materials. In this work, we present Bragg waveguides fabricated in bulk chalcogenide glass using an ultrafast laser. Waveguides with near circularly symmetric cross sections and low propagation loss are obtained through spatial and temporal beam shaping. Using a single-pass technique, the waveguide and Bragg structure are formed at the same time. First through sixth order gratings with strengths of up to 25 dB are realized, and performance is evaluated based on the modulation duty cycle of the writing beam. © 2014 Optical Society of America

    Self-heated fiber Bragg grating sensors

    This letter demonstrates an approach for tuning fiber Bragg grating sensors with optical energy carried in the same optical fiber. Optical energy carried in the optical fiber was used to heat in-fiber Bragg gratings in order to alter the grating's optical response to surrounding media. The functional enhancement of optically heated Bragg gratings as sensor devices is demonstrated by a dual-function Bragg grating temperature and level sensing array for liquid at room and cryogenic temperatures. © 2005 American Institute of Physics
