RCEP vs TPP: the pursuit of eastern dominance
ASEAN when defined as a single regional bloc, can be perceived as being one of the most prominent battle-fields between two new economic powerhouses; the US and China. When compared to efforts in the prior half-century, the US’s regional integration efforts were derided politically and economically since the 2007 Western financial crisis. This was predominantly due to a plethora of reasons alike to the fact that post the impasse, the ASEAN nations’ credence of the US as a political and trading partner greatly eroded. As a late runner, China exemplifies her regional prowess via an influx of Chinese emigration in those targeted regions. This enables the ASEAN nations to centre their trade around the Chinese economy in lieu of that of the US. This is galvanised by the wealth of the ethnic minority that efficiently entwine the ASEAN nations with China as the nucleus. Through the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership and the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement, two subsequent agreements were penned; and these concepts are examined from the Chinese perspective, and the effects that are encompassed are further amplified throughout the course of this paper

Toarcian oceanic anoxic event: An assessment of global causes using belemnite C isotope records
Two hypotheses have been proposed to explain simultaneous large negative excursions (up to 7% PeeDee belemnite) in bulk carbonate (delta(13)C(carb)) and organic carbon isotope records (delta(13)C(org)) from black shales marking the Toarcian oceanic anoxic event (T-OAE). The first explanation envisions recycling of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) with a light isotopic signature into the photic zone from the lower levels of a salinity-stratified water mass, essentially requiring a regional paleoceanographic driver of the carbon cycle. The second involves the rapid and massive dissociation of methane from gas hydrates that effectively renders the T-OAE a global perturbation of the carbon cycle. We present C isotope records from belemnites (delta(13)C(bel)) sampled from two localities, calibrated with high-resolution ammonite biostratigraphy and Sr isotope stratigraphy, in Yorkshire (England) and Dotternhausen (Germany), that can be used to assess which model best explains the observed changes in carbon isotopes. Our records of the delta(13)C composition of belemnite calcite do not show the large negative C isotope excursions shown by coeval records of delta(13)C in sedimentary organic matter or bulk sedimentary carbonate. It follows that isotopically light carbon cannot have dominated the ocean-atmosphere carbon reservoir during the Toarcian OAE, as would be required were the methane release hypothesis correct. On the basis of an evaluation of available carbon isotope records we discuss a model in which the recycling of DIC from the deeper levels of a stratified water body, and shallowing of anoxic conditions into the photic zone, can explain all isotopic profiles. In particular, the model accounts for the higher C isotope values of belemnites that are characteristic of open ocean, well-mixed conditions, and the lower C isotope values of neritic phytoplankton communities that recorded the degree of density stratification and shallowing of anoxia in the photic zone
Large-eddy simulation of a particle-laden turbulent channel flow
Large-eddy simulations of a vertical turbulent channel flow with 420,000 solid particles are performed in order to get insight into fundamental aspects of a riser flow The question is addressed whether collisions between particles are important for the ow statistics. The turbulent channel ow corresponds to a particle volume fraction of 0.013 and a mass load ratio of 18, values that are relatively high compared to recent literature on large-eddy simulation of two-phase ows. In order to simulate this ow, we present a formulation of the equations for compressible ow in a porous medium including particle forces. These equations are solved with LES using a Taylor approximation of the dynamic subgrid-model. The results show that due to particle-uid interactions the boundary layer becomes thinner, leading to a higher skin-friction coefcient. Important effects of the particle collisions are also observed, on the mean uid prole, but even more o on particle properties. The collisions cause a less uniform particle concentration\ud

Probing Quantum Geometry at LHC
We present an evidence, that the volumes of compactified spaces as well as
the areas of black hole horizons must be quantized in Planck units. This
quantization has phenomenological consequences, most dramatic being for micro
black holes in the theories with TeV scale gravity that can be produced at LHC.
We predict that black holes come in form of a discrete tower with well defined
spacing. Instead of thermal evaporation, they decay through the sequence of
spontaneous particle emissions, with each transition reducing the horizon area
by strictly integer number of Planck units. Quantization of the horizons can be
a crucial missing link by which the notion of the minimal length in gravity
eliminates physical singularities. In case when the remnants of the black holes
with the minimal possible area and mass of order few TeV are stable, they might
be good candidates for the cold dark matter in the Universe.Comment: 14 pages, Late

Diesel exhaust and house dust mite allergen lead to common changes in the airway methylome and hydroxymethylome.
Exposures to diesel exhaust particles (DEP) from traffic and house dust mite (HDM) allergens significantly increase risks of airway diseases, including asthma. This negative impact of DEP and HDM may in part be mediated by epigenetic mechanisms. Beyond functioning as a mechanical barrier, airway epithelial cells provide the first line of immune defense towards DEP and HDM exposures. To understand the epigenetic responses of airway epithelial cells to these exposures, we exposed human bronchial epithelial cells to DEP and HDM and studied genome-wide 5-methyl-cytosine (5mC) and 5-hydroxy-methylcytosine (5hmC) at base resolution. We found that exposures to DEP and HDM result in elevated TET1 and DNMT1 expression, associated with 5mC and 5hmC changes. Interestingly, over 20% of CpG sites are responsive to both exposures and changes in 5mC at these sites negatively correlated with gene expression differences. These 5mC and 5hmC changes are located in genes and pathways related to oxidative stress responses, epithelial function and immune cell responses and are enriched for binding sites of transcription factors (TFs) involved in these pathways. Histone marks associated with promoters, enhancers and actively transcribed gene bodies were associated with exposure-induced DNA methylation changes. Collectively, our data suggest that exposures to DEP and HDM alter 5mC and 5hmC levels at regulatory regions bound by TFs, which coordinate with histone marks to regulate gene networks of oxidative stress responses, epithelial function and immune cell responses. These observations provide novel insights into the epigenetic mechanisms that mediate the epithelial responses to DEP and HDM in airways
Visual BFI: an Exploratory Study for Image-based Personality Test
This paper positions and explores the topic of image-based personality test.
Instead of responding to text-based questions, the subjects will be provided a
set of "choose-your-favorite-image" visual questions. With the image options of
each question belonging to the same concept, the subjects' personality traits
are estimated by observing their preferences of images under several unique
concepts. The solution to design such an image-based personality test consists
of concept-question identification and image-option selection. We have
presented a preliminary framework to regularize these two steps in this
exploratory study. A demo version of the designed image-based personality test
is available at http://www.visualbfi.org/. Subjective as well as objective
evaluations have demonstrated the feasibility of image-based personality test
in limited questions

Trace chemical measurements from the northern midlatitude lowermost stratosphere in early spring: Distributions, correlations, and fate
In situ measurements of a large number of trace chemicals from the midlatitude (37-57°N) lower stratosphere were performed with the NASA DC-8 aircraft during March 1994. Deepest penetrations into the stratosphere (550 ppb O3, 279 ppb N2O, and 350 K potential temperature) corresponded to a region that has been defined as the "lowermost stratosphere" (LS) by Holton et al [1995]. Analysis of data shows that the mixing ratios of long-lived tracer species (e. g. CH4, HNO3, NOy, CFCs) are linearly correlated with those of O3 and N2O. A ΔNOy/ΔO3 of 0.0054 ppb/ppb and ΔNOy/ΔN2O of -0.081 ppb/ppb is in good agreement with other reported measurements from the DC-8. These slopes are however, somewhat steeper than those reported from the ER-2 airborne studies. We find that the reactive nitrogen budget in the LS is largely balanced with HNO3 accounting for 80% of NOy, and PAN and NOx together accounting for 5%. A number of oxygenated species (e. g. acetone, H2O2) were present and may provide an important in situ source of HOx in the LS. SO2 mixing ratios were found to increase in the stratosphere at a rate that was comparable to the decline in OCS levels. No evidence of particle formation could be observed. Ethane, propane, and acetylene mixing ratios declined rapidly in the LS with Cl atoms likely playing a key role in this process. A number of reactive hydrocarbons/halocarbons (e. g. C6H6, CH3I) were present at low but measurable concentrations
Aspects Of Heavy Quark Theory
Recent achievements in the heavy quark theory are critically reviewed. The
emphasis is put on those aspects which either did not attract enough attention
or cause heated debates in the current literature. Among other topics we
discuss (i) basic parameters of the heavy quark theory; (ii) a class of exact
QCD inequalities; (iii) new heavy quark sum rules; (iv) virial theorem; (v)
applications (|V_cb| from the total semileptonic width and from the B->D*
transition at zero recoil). In some instances new derivations of the previously
known results are given, or new aspects addressed. In particular, we dwell on
the exact QCD inequalities. Furthermore, a toy model is considered that may
shed light on the controversy regarding the value of the kinetic energy of
