Confinement of matter fields in compact (2+1)-dimensional QED theory of high-TcT_{c} superconductors

We study confinement of matter fields in the effective compact (2+1)-dimensional QED theory of high-TcT_{c} superconductors. It is shown that the monopole configurations do not affect the propagator of gauge potential aμa_{\mu}. Based on this result, we found that: chiral symmetry breaking and confinement take place simultaneously in the antiferromagnetic state; neither monopole effect nor Anderson-Higgs mechanism can cause confinement in the d-wave superconducting state.Comment: 5 pages, no figure

On the Cauchy problem for the magnetic Zakharov system

In this paper, we study the Cauchy problem of the magnetic type Zakharov system which describes the pondermotive force and magnetic field generation effects resulting from the non-linear interaction between plasma-wave and particles. By using the energy method to derive a priori bounds and an approximation argument for the construction of solutions, we obtain local existence and uniqueness results for the magnetic Zakharov system in the case of d=2,3d=2,3

On the least common multiple of qq-binomial coefficients

In this paper, we prove the following identity \lcm({n\brack 0}_q,{n\brack 1}_q,...,{n\brack n}_q) =\frac{\lcm([1]_q,[2]_q,...,[n+1]_q)}{[n+1]_q}, where [nk]q{n\brack k}_q denotes the qq-binomial coefficient and [n]q=1qn1q[n]_q=\frac{1-q^n}{1-q}. This result is a qq-analogue of an identity of Farhi [Amer. Math. Monthly, November (2009)].Comment: 5 page

Microphase transitions of block copolymer/homopolymer under shear flow

Cell dynamics simulation is used to investigate the phase behavior of block copolymer/homopolymer mixture subjected to a steady shear flow. Phase transitions occur from transverse to parallel and then to perpendicular lamellar structure with an increase of shear rate and this is the result of interaction between the shear flow and the concentration fluctuation. Rheological properties, such as normal stress differences and shear viscosity, are all closely related with the direction of the lamellae. Furthermore, we specifically explore the phase behavior and the order parameter under weak and strong shear of two different initial states, and realize the importance of the thermal history. It is necessary to apply the shear field at the appropriate time if we want to get what we want. These results provide an easy method to create ordered, defect-free materials in experiment and engineering technology through imposing shear flow.Comment: 14 pages, 9 figure

Exact characterization of O(n) tricriticality in two dimensions

We propose exact expressions for the conformal anomaly and for three critical exponents of the tricritical O(n) loop model as a function of n in the range 2n3/2-2 \leq n \leq 3/2. These findings are based on an analogy with known relations between Potts and O(n) models, and on an exact solution of a 'tri-tricritical' Potts model described in the literature. We verify the exact expressions for the tricritical O(n) model by means of a finite-size scaling analysis based on numerical transfer-matrix calculations.Comment: submitted to Phys. Rev. Let

Metastable helium molecules as tracers in superfluid liquid 4^{4}He

    Get PDF
Metastable helium molecules generated in a discharge near a sharp tungsten tip operated in either pulsed mode or continuous field-emission mode in superfluid liquid 4^{4}He are imaged using a laser-induced-fluorescence technique. By pulsing the tip, a small cloud of He2_{2}^{*} molecules is produced. At 2.0 K, the molecules in the liquid follow the motion of the normal fluid. We can determine the normal-fluid velocity in a heat-induced counterflow by tracing the position of a single molecule cloud. As we run the tip in continuous field-emission mode, a normal-fluid jet from the tip is generated and molecules are entrained in the jet. A focused 910 nm pump laser pulse is used to drive a small group of molecules to the vibrational a(1)a(1) state. Subsequent imaging of the tagged a(1)a(1) molecules with an expanded 925 nm probe laser pulse allows us to measure the velocity of the normal fluid. The techniques we developed demonstrate for the first time the ability to trace the normal-fluid component in superfluid helium using angstrom-sized particles.Comment: 4 pages, 7 figures.
