Genome-wide association meta-analysis of fish and EPA+DHA consumption in 17 US and European cohorts
Surface reactivity of amphibole asbestos. A comparison between crocidolite and tremolite
Among asbestos minerals, fibrous riebeckite (crocidolite) and tremolite share the amphibole structure but
largely differ in terms of their iron content and oxidation state. In asbestos toxicology, iron-generated free
radicals are largely held as one of the causes of asbestos malignant effect. With the aim of clarifying i) the
relationship between Fe occurrence and asbestos surface reactivity, and ii) how free-radical generation is
modulated by surface modifications of the minerals, UICC crocidolite and fibrous tremolite from Maryland
were leached from 1 day to 1 month in an oxidative medium buffered at pH 7.4 to induce redox alterations
and surface rearrangements that may occur in body fluids. Structural and chemical modifications and free
radical generation were monitored by HR-TEM/EDS and spin trapping/EPR spectroscopy, respectively.
Free radical yield resulted to be dependent on few specific Fe2+ and Fe3+ surface sites rather than total Fe
content. The evolution of reactivity with time highlighted that low-coordinated Fe ions primarily contribute
to the overall reactivity of the fibre. Current findings contribute to explain the causes of the severe asbestosinduced
oxidative stress at molecular level also for iron-poor amphiboles, and demonstrate that asbestos
have a sustained surface radical activity even when highly altered by oxidative leaching
Customary International Law: An Instrument Choice Perspective
Contemporary international lawmaking is characterized by a rapid growth of “soft law” instruments. Interdisciplinary studies have followed suit, purporting to frame the key question states face as a choice between soft and “hard” law. But this literature focuses on only one form of hard law—treaties—and cooperation through formal institutions. Customary international law (CIL) is barely mentioned. Other scholars dismiss CIL as increasingly irrelevant or even obsolete. Entirely missing from these debates is any consideration of whether and when states might prefer custom over treaties or soft law

peer-reviewedThe demand for vegetable proteins increases globally and seaweeds are considered novel and promising protein sources. However, the tough polysaccharide-rich cell walls and the abundance of polyphenols reduce the extractability and digestibility of seaweed proteins. Therefore, food grade, scalable, and environmentally friendly protein extraction techniques are required. To date, little work has been carried out on developing such methods taking into consideration the structural differences between seaweed species. In this work, three different protein extraction methods were applied to three Swedish seaweeds (Porphyra umbilicalis, Ulva lactuca, and Saccharina latissima). These methods included (I) a traditional method using sonication in water and subsequent ammonium sulfate-induced protein precipitation, (II) the pH-shift protein extraction method using alkaline protein solubilization followed by isoelectric precipitation, and (III) the accelerated solvent extraction (ASE®) method where proteins are extracted after pre-removal of lipids and phlorotannins. The highest protein yields were achieved using the pH-shift method applied to P. umbilicalis (22.6 ± 7.3%) and S. latissima (25.1 ± 0.9%). The traditional method resulted in the greatest protein yield when applied to U. lactuca (19.6 ± 0.8%). However, the protein concentration in the produced extracts was highest for all three species using the pH-shift method (71.0 ± 3.7%, 51.2 ± 2.1%, and 40.7 ± 0.5% for P. umbilicalis, U. lactuca, and S. latissima, respectively). In addition, the pH-shift method was found to concentrate the fatty acids in U. lactuca and S. latissima by 2.2 and 1.6 times, respectively. The pH-shift method can therefore be considered a promising strategy for producing seaweed protein ingredients for use in food and feed
The sdA problem - II. Photometric and Spectroscopic Follow-up
Subdwarf A star (sdA) is a spectral classification given to objects showing
H-rich spectra and sub-main sequence surface gravities, but effective
temperature lower than the zero-age horizontal branch. Their evolutionary
origin is an enigma. In this work, we discuss the results of follow-up
observations of selected sdAs. We obtained time resolved spectroscopy for 24
objects, and time-series photometry for another 19 objects. For two targets, we
report both spectroscopy and photometry observations. We confirm seven objects
to be new extremely-low mass white dwarfs (ELMs), one of which is a known

The Future of Aquatic Commons: Recommendations Based on an Evaluation of Business Models and Stakeholder Consultation
Aquatic Commons is a digital repository established by the International Association of Aquatic
and Marine Libraries and Information Centers (IAMSLIC) in 2007 to provide a solution for
member institutions that didn’t have an institutional repository. It is directed by the Aquatic
Commons Board, and submissions are reviewed by an editorial team. Originally hosted by the
Florida Center for Library Automation (FCLA), the repository was moved to the International
Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange (IODE) in 2011 when FCLA faced major
budgetary issues. Aquatic Commons has grown to more than 20,000 publications from over 90
institutions in all areas of the aquatic sciences, including freshwater, fisheries, and
oceanography, yet support for the repository has not kept pace with developmental needs. To
ensure a sustainable future, the Aquatic Commons Board determined it was necessary to
conduct an evaluation and created the Aquatic Commons Evaluation (ACE) team. The team
identified and compared four potential business models: 1a) maintain Aquatic Commons as a
separate repository but upgrade the EPrints software; 1b) maintain Aquatic Commons as a
separate repository but migrate to DSpace software; 2) migrate content to the existing IODE
OceanDocs repository but retain Aquatic Commons identity by having a separate DSpace
community; and 3) partner with IODE and possibly the Aquatic Science and Fisheries Abstracts
(ASFA) to create an entirely new repository with content merged from Aquatic Commons and
OceanDocs. The team consulted with potential partners (e.g. ASFA and IODE) and ran a survey
to elicit feedback from members, depositors, and other stakeholders about the models,
addressing issues of thematic scope, branding, software, technical requirements, workflows,
and training. At the 2019 conference, the team presented a recommendation based on the
evaluation in order to initiate a roadmap for the Aquatic Commons
