Up In Smoke: The Place of the Modern American Cigarette
Since its discovery, the use of tobacco products has acted as a form of meditation, social engagement, and reprieve. In the era following the late 1950’s, designated “smoking areas,” whether sequestered informally by social constraints or formally by the law, have led to a culture of very “implaced” cigarette smoking. These have become places of escape, places of exile, and places of compromise. This paper explores what it means to belong, and not to belong, to these places, and the role of designated smoking areas in the formation of our culture
Bayesian nonparametric multivariate convex regression
In many applications, such as economics, operations research and
reinforcement learning, one often needs to estimate a multivariate regression
function f subject to a convexity constraint. For example, in sequential
decision processes the value of a state under optimal subsequent decisions may
be known to be convex or concave. We propose a new Bayesian nonparametric
multivariate approach based on characterizing the unknown regression function
as the max of a random collection of unknown hyperplanes. This specification
induces a prior with large support in a Kullback-Leibler sense on the space of
convex functions, while also leading to strong posterior consistency. Although
we assume that f is defined over R^p, we show that this model has a convergence
rate of log(n)^{-1} n^{-1/(d+2)} under the empirical L2 norm when f actually
maps a d dimensional linear subspace to R. We design an efficient reversible
jump MCMC algorithm for posterior computation and demonstrate the methods
through application to value function approximation
Hairy black holes in cubic quasi-topological gravity
We construct a class of five dimensional black hole solutions to cubic
quasi-topological gravity with conformal scalar hair and study their
thermodynamics. We find these black holes provide the second example of black
hole -lines: a line of second order (continuous) phase transitions,
akin to the fluid/superfluid transition of He. Examples of isolated
critical points are found for spherical black holes, marking the first in the
literature to date. We also find various novel and interesting phase
structures, including an isolated critical point occurring in conjunction with
a double reentrant phase transition. The AdS vacua of the theory are studied,
finding ghost-free configurations where the scalar field takes on a non-zero
constant value, in notable contrast to the five dimensional Lovelock case.Comment: 29 pages, 12 figure

Improving the Accuracy of DaT Scan Interpretation: a retrospective study to identify variables that standardize the review of DaT scans for idiopathic Parkinson’s disease
Introduction: Until recently, the diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease (PD) has been based solely on clinical observation. The DaT scan is a tool that allows clinicians to visualize areas of neurodegeneration in PD and can help guide diagnosis. However, there is a discordance between clinical judgement and interpretation of DaT scans. In this study, we aim to improve the utility of DaT scans in the diagnosis of PD by identifying factors that can lead to a misdiagnosis and determine which image findings predict a clinical syndrome of parkinsonism.
Methods: We will conduct a retrospective chart review to analyze DaT scans of 100 patients clinically diagnosed with PD. We will calculate the initial SN/SP/PPV/NPV for diagnoses based clinically compared to scan. We will then blindly review and reclassify all scans as definitely abnormal, definitely normal, or indeterminate. We will then recalculate a revised SN/SP/PPV/NPV to see if these values changed following reanalysis. From the discordant scans, we will attempt to identify factors that can further assist in interpreting DaT scans.
Results: Patients have been identified and we are in the process of extracting data. We anticipate that after systematic, careful re-review, the specificity of DaT scans will be higher, due to improvement in identifying positive scans.
Discussion: Imaging can be costly and cumbersome for patients and clinicians alike. Currently, DaT scans do not offer an improved accuracy in diagnosis over clinical judgement. If the interpretation of DaT scans can be optimized, they will be of greater utility to both patients and physicians

Assessing Mental Health Care for Iraqi Refugees in Jordan Looking to New Solutions for the Future
Across the globe citizens flee their native countries in search of newfound safety and stability. These people are known as refugees. Since 2003 refugees from Iraq have entered Jordan in search of a better life. Unfortunately, the terrors that Iraqi refugees escape do not disappear after crossing country lines. These memories cause serious mental health conditions for Iraqi refugees. Such conditions are intensified by the living environment in Jordan where Iraqis are not granted legal status. While some refugees are wealthy and others are resettled to the United States or Europe, the majority remain “stuck” in Jordan.
This study seeks to explore the mental health system used to deliver services to Iraqis living in Jordan. In doing so it investigates mental health conditions, the available treatment services, and the flaws in the system which provides them. The data and analysis is based off of research acquired through a set of interviews with Iraqis, aid workers, and mental health professionals. The addition of appropriate literature assists in developing and exploring my original hypothesis. The study indicates that five key problems exist within the aid system: unclear Iraqi population number, weak Jordanian mental health care system, decreasing funds, stigma of mental health, and hardships faced in Jordan. Furthermore, possible solutions are outlined in the conclusion of this study.
It is my personal hope that this study is used as further support that both the mental health care system in Jordan and the provision of aid to Iraqi refugees need major improvements
