    An Effective Theory for Midgap States in Doped Spin Ladder and Spin-Peierls Systems: Liouville Quantum Mechanics

    In gapped spin ladder and spin-Peierls systems the introduction of disorder, for example by doping, leads to the appearance of low energy midgap states. The fact that these strongly correlated systems can be mapped onto one dimensional noninteracting fermions provides a rare opportunity to explore systems which have both strong interactions and disorder. In this paper we show that the statistics of the zero energy midgap wave functions in these models can be effectively described by Liouville Quantum Mechanics. This enables us to calculate the disorder averaged N-point correlation functions of these states (the explicit calculation is performed for N=2,3). We find that whilst these midgap states are typically weakly correlated, their disorder averaged correlation are power law. This discrepancy arises because the correlations are not self-averaging and averages of the wave functions are dominated by anomalously strongly correlated configurations.Comment: 13 page latex fil

    Inequalities in time from stopping paid work to death: findings from the ONS Longitudinal Study, 2001 to 2011

    Background: United Kingdom State pension eligibility ages are linked to average life expectancy, which ignores wide socioeconomic disparities in health, and overall, life expectancy. Objectives: Investigate whether there are occupational social class differences in the amount of time older adults live after they stop work, and how much of these differences are due to health. Methods: Participants were 76 485 members of the ONS Longitudinal Study (LS), who were 50-75y at the 2001 census and had stopped work by the 2011 census. Over 10 years of follow-up, we used censored linear regression to estimate mean differences in years between stopping work and death by occupational social class. Results: After adjustment for age, both social class and health were independent predictors of post-work duration [Mean difference (95% CI): Unskilled class vs Professional 2.7yrs (2.4, 3.1); not good vs good health 2.4yrs (1.9; 2.9)], with LS members in the three manual classes experiencing ~1 additional year of post-work duration than professional workers (interaction p-values all <0.001). Further adjustment for gender and educational qualifications reduced, but did not eliminate social class and post-work duration associations. We estimate the difference in post-work years between professional classes in good health and unskilled workers not in good health as 5.1 years for women (21.0 vs 26.1) and 5.5 years for men (19.5 vs 25.0). Conclusions: Lower social class groups are negatively affected by uniform state pension ages, because they are more likely to stop work at younger ages due to health reasons

    Testosterone Levels in Men with Chronic Migraine

    Chronic migraine is a frequent and debilitating condition affecting 14% of the general population. This prospective observational pilot study investigated whether men with chronic migraine have lower than expected total serum testosterone levels. We identified 14 men ages 26-51 at our Institution who fulfilled the ICHD-3b criteria for chronic migraine and obtained serum total testosterone levels. The mean total testosterone level in our 14 patients was 322 ng/dL (range: 120-542 ng/dL) which is in the lower 5% of the reference range for our laboratory (300-1080 ng/dL). Men with chronic migraine had lower total testosterone levels compared to published agematched normative median values by a median difference of 62 ng/dL (P=0.0494). This finding suggests that hypothalamic regulation is altered in patients with chronic migraine. Further studies are warranted to determine whether testosterone supplementation in men with chronic migraine reduces the number of headaches or the associated symptoms of hypogonadism

    High definition systems in Japan

    The successful implementation of a strategy to produce high-definition systems within the Japanese economy will favorably affect the fundamental competitiveness of Japan relative to the rest of the world. The development of an infrastructure necessary to support high-definition products and systems in that country involves major commitments of engineering resources, plants and equipment, educational programs and funding. The results of these efforts appear to affect virtually every aspect of the Japanese industrial complex. The results of assessments of the current progress of Japan toward the development of high-definition products and systems are presented. The assessments are based on the findings of a panel of U.S. experts made up of individuals from U.S. academia and industry, and derived from a study of the Japanese literature combined with visits to the primary relevant industrial laboratories and development agencies in Japan. Specific coverage includes an evaluation of progress in R&D for high-definition television (HDTV) displays that are evolving in Japan; high-definition standards and equipment development; Japanese intentions for the use of HDTV; economic evaluation of Japan's public policy initiatives in support of high-definition systems; management analysis of Japan's strategy of leverage with respect to high-definition products and systems

    Orientifolds of type II string theory admit a certain set of generalized NS-NS fluxes, including not only the three-form field strength H, but also metric and non-geometric fluxes, which are related to H by T-duality. We describe in general how these fluxes appear as parameters of an effective N=1 supergravity theory in four dimensions, and in particular how certain generalized NS-NS fluxes can act as charges for R-R axions, leading to D-term contributions to the effective scalar potential.     Mean-Field Theory for Spin Ladders Using Angular-Momentum Coupled Bases

    We study properties of two-leg Heisenberg spin ladders in a mean-field approximation using a variety of angular-momentum coupled bases. The mean-field theory proposed by Gopalan, Rice, and Sigrist, which uses a rung basis, assumes that the mean-field ground state consists of a condensate of spin-singlets along the rungs of the ladder. We generalize this approach to larger angular-momentum coupled bases which incorporate---by their mere definition---a substantial fraction of the important short-range structure of these materials. In these bases the mean-field ground-state remains a condensate of spin singlet---but now with each involving a larger fraction of the spins in the ladder. As expected, the ``purity'' of the ground-state, as judged by the condensate fraction, increases with the size of the elementary block defining the basis. Moreover, the coupling to quasiparticle excitations becomes weaker as the size of the elementary block increases. Thus, the weak-coupling limit of the theory becomes an accurate representation of the underlying mean-field dynamics.     The Non Linear Sigma Model and Spin Ladders

    The well known Haldane map from spin chains into the O(3)O(3) non linear sigma model is generalized to the case of spin ladders. This map allows us to explain the different qualitative behaviour between even and odd ladders, exactly in the same way it explains the difference between integer and half-integer spin chains. Namely, for even ladders the topological term in the sigma model action is absent, while for odd ladders the θ\theta parameter, which multiplies the topological term, is equal to 2πS2 \pi S, where SS is the spin of the ladder. Hence even ladders should have a dynamically generated spin gap, while odd ladders with half-integer spin should stay gapless, and physically equivalent to a perturbed SU(2)1SU(2)_1 Wess-Zumino -Witten model in the infrared regime. We also derive some consequences from the dependence of the sigma model coupling constant on the ladder Heisenberg couplings constants.Comment: Latex file, 14 pages, no figure
