A RELAÇÃO ENTRE PREÇO E DEMANDA POR JOGOS DE FUTEBOL NO BRASIL

    Get PDF

The HIV Envelope but Not VSV Glycoprotein Is Capable of Mediating HIV Latent Infection of Resting CD4 T Cells

HIV fusion and entry into CD4 T cells are mediated by two receptors, CD4 and CXCR4. This receptor requirement can be abrogated by pseudotyping the virion with the vesicular stomatitis virus glycoprotein (VSV-G) that mediates viral entry through endocytosis. The VSV-G-pseudotyped HIV is highly infectious for transformed cells, although the virus circumvents the viral receptors and the actin cortex. In HIV infection, gp120 binding to the receptors also transduces signals. Recently, we demonstrated a unique requirement for CXCR4 signaling in HIV latent infection of blood resting CD4 T cells. Thus, we performed parallel studies in which the VSV-G-pseudotyped HIV was used to infect both transformed and resting T cells in the absence of coreceptor signaling. Our results indicate that in transformed T cells, the VSV-G-pseudotyping results in lower viral DNA synthesis but a higher rate of nuclear migration. However, in resting CD4 T cells, only the HIV envelope-mediated entry, but not the VSV-G-mediated endocytosis, can lead to viral DNA synthesis and nuclear migration. The viral particles entering through the endocytotic pathway were destroyed within 1–2 days. These results indicate that the VSV-G-mediated endocytotic pathway, although active in transformed cells, is defective and is not a pathway that can establish HIV latent infection of primary resting T cells. Our results highlight the importance of the genuine HIV envelope and its signaling capacity in the latent infection of blood resting T cells. These results also call for caution on the endocytotic entry model of HIV-1, and on data interpretation where the VSV-G-pseudotyped HIV was used for identifying HIV restriction factors in resting T cells

Urgences en pathologie orbitaire non traumatique. [Emergencies in nontraumatic orbital diseases]

INTRODUCTION: Nontraumatic orbital diseases only exceptionally require emergency treatment. In this paper an emergency is considered when the diagnosis and/or treatment must be done within a maximal period of 1 week. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All patients with nontraumatic orbital diseases from the Department of Ophthalmology of the University of Lausanne and from the office of one of the authors (N.D.) over the last 35 years were studied, in view of their degree of emergency. Data from 77 patients (28 females and 49 males), aged from birth to 85 years, were collected. RESULTS: Idiopathic inflammations of the orbit (pseudotumors) were the most frequent diagnoses seen as an emergency, followed by rhinological diseases with orbital consequences (exteriorized sinusitis or mucoceles), dysthyroid orbital pathologies, bleeding in lymphangiomas and varices, rhabdomyosarcoma, and acute dacryoadenitis. Fast progressive proptosis, oculomotor disorders, and pain are the most frequent alarm signals. After the diagnostic procedure, a surgical or medical treatment is frequently proposed. CONCLUSION: Although rare, emergencies in orbital diseases are a challenge for the general ophthalmologist. The morbidity and sometimes the mortality due to these diseases are often reduced by proper management. Patients generally have to be referred to a specialized unit

Oral buflomedil in diabetic background retinopathy: results of a preliminary controlled study

Twenty insulin-dependent diabetic patients with signs of background retinopathy were given Buflomedil 600 mg/day orally or placebo in a randomized double-blind trial for a 6-month period. A larger number of patients had their retinal condition deteriorating in the placebo group and this finding is an indication for pursuing investigations on a larger scale in this direction

L'angiodiathermocoagulation, une operation depassee? [Is angiodiathermocoagulation an outmoded operation?]

Following a short summary of the anatomical and physiological aspects of the surgical procedure, the authors present a series of 320 eyes operated upon by the method of angiodiathermocoagulation. Open-angle glaucoma, followed by aphakic glaucoma, respond the best to this procedure, the expected number of good results being approximately 25% where the criteria are severe. The low percentage of severe complications represents one of the greatest advantages of angiodiathermocoagulation, which may be recommended in desperate cases

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the lacrimal gland. BACKGROUND: Adenoid cystic carcinoma is the most frequent epithelial tumour of the lacrimal gland. It represents 1.6 % of the orbital tumours. The aim of this study is to present a series of such patients who were followed up in our clinic and to discuss their clinical management in order to achieve a better life prognosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The cases we followed up in our department were presented, the treatment modalities were discussed, and conclusions were drawn. RESULTS: Six patients with this pathology were examined, 3 men and 3 women, aged 31 to 69 years. A large excision was performed in 5 patients (exenteration alone or extended exenteration with complementary radiotherapy) and in 1 patient with excision of the tumour followed by radiotherapy. One patient died due to carcinoma six years after the first surgery. The median follow-up period of our cases is 25 months. CONCLUSION: Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the lacrimal gland is a malignant tumour with a reserved prognosis. Various treatments were proposed to improve the mortality rate of the disease. At present radical surgery with or without complementary therapy seems to give the best chances of healing, at least with short or mid-term follow-up

INTRODUCTION: Rhabdomyosarcoma is the most frequent primitive orbital malignant tumor in children. If the treatment is started as soon as possible after discovery of the disease, the vital prognosis is considerably better than otherwise. The goal of this paper is to present the new therapeutic protocol and to report our experience in this field. MATERIAL AND METHOD: During the past 35 years, 102 cases of orbital tumors were collected in children under 15 years of age: 5 cases of rhabdomyosarcoma were cared for in our department. At the time of tumor diagnosis, the age of our patients ranged from 3 weeks to 13 years. After a biopsy or excision biopsy, all our cases were treated by chemotherapy with or without radiotherapy. Medication was mostly vincristine, ifosfamide and actinomycine D. When the result of the treatment was not satisfactory, carboplatine and epirubicine, vincristine as well as ifosfamide were given. Radiotherapy was performed only in particular cases or in recurrences. CONCLUSION: Rhabdomyosarcoma is a highly malignant tumor. Although rare, it is the most frequent of malignant tumors in children. It is important to keep it in mind in order to perform a biopsy enabling quick diagnosis and treatment following the modern protocol giving the highest chances of survival to these patients: about 98% in 3 years
