The interpretation of brain natriuretic peptide in critical care patients; will it ever be useful?
The measurement of B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) is recommended for the diagnosis of decompensated heart failure, the prognosis of chronic heart failure is worse if BNP is increased and studies suggest that BNP is useful to guide therapy. A study by Di Somma and colleagues adds to the body of evidence showing that patients with a marked decrease in BNP concentrations during their hospital admission are less likely to be readmitted with a further adverse cardiac event than patients in whom BNP fails to decrease. However, the wider interpretation of BNP concentrations in critically ill patients with other conditions remains uncertain
Coating thickness and elastic modulus measurement using ultrasonic bulk wave resonance
Measurement of the resonant through thickness ultrasonic modes of a homogeneous plate using a fast Fourier transform of the temporal data can be used to calculate plate thickness very accurately. We describe an extension of this principle to two-layer systems, examining a thin coating on a substrate of known properties. The resonant behavior of these systems is predicted and we explain how this approach is used to measure coating thickness and elastic modulus. Noncontact electromagnetic acoustic transducers are used for ultrasonic measurement, as they do not significantly affect the resonant response of the system, unlike alternative contact transducers
Atmospheric effects on remote sensing of non-uniform temperature sources
The effects are considered of an absorbing, emitting, and scattering atmosphere upon the remote sensing of surface areas having non-uniform intensity. These atmospheric effects may be significant in determination, by remote sensing, of non-uniform surface temperature distributions, and the results of the investigation are applicable in such cases. Analytical methods and a digital computational program are presented, expressing the results in terms of contrast and contrast transmittance between two adjacent emitting areas having unequal intensities, in the presence of a additional disturbing emitters. In the computational procedure, emitting areas are replaced by point-source emitters, each assigned and effective intensity based upon the intensity of the area it replaces. Absorbing, emitting, and scattering behavior of the atmosphere may be specified in the computational procedure either by means of analytical atmospheric models or by means of calibrating ground level emitters
Spinning branes in Riemann-Cartan spacetime
We use the conservation law of the stress-energy and spin tensors to study
the motion of massive brane-like objects in Riemann-Cartan geometry. The
world-sheet equations and boundary conditions are obtained in a manifestly
covariant form. In the particle case, the resultant world-line equations turn
out to exhibit a novel spin-curvature coupling. In particular, the spin of a
zero-size particle does not couple to the background curvature. In the string
case, the world-sheet dynamics is studied for some special choices of spin and
torsion. As a result, the known coupling to the Kalb-Ramond antisymmetric
external field is obtained. Geometrically, the Kalb-Ramond field has been
recognized as a part of the torsion itself, rather than the torsion potential
Transnational Shipments of Nuclear Materials by Sea: Do Current Safeguards Provide Coastal States a Right to Deny Innocent Passage?
The maritime transport of nuclear materials has created a conflict between two international law regimes: the United Nations International Law of the Sea, and the developing customary law of the \u27precautionary principle\u27 in international environmental law. This conflict became apparent in recent years when several coastal states denied passage to ships transporting nuclear materials arguing the shipments posed an environmental threat. This conflict has raised an issue which is currently unresolved: Do coastal states have a right to prohibit innocent passage to ships carrying nuclear materials if these ships fail to fulfill the requirements of the precautionary principle? This review finds the current nuclear safeguard regime does not require shipping states to provide notice to or authorization from transit states. Thus, coastal states have no legal basis to deny innocent passage. The safeguard regime, however, is evolving and may adopt a precautionary approach in the future
Canadian national sport organisations’ use of the web for relationship marketing in promoting sport participation
Sport participation development requires a systematic process which involves knowledge creation, dissemination and interactions between National Sport Organisations, participants, clubs and associations as well as other agencies. Using a relationship marketing approach (Grönroos, 1997, Gummesson, 2002, Olkkonen, 1999), this paper addressed the question ‘How do Canadian NSOs use the Web, in terms of functionality and services offered, to create and maintain relationships with sport participants and their sport delivery partners?’ Ten Canadian NSOs’ websites were examined: functionality was analysed using Burgess and Cooper’s (2000) eMICA model, while NSOs’ utilisation of the Internet to establish and maintain relationships with sport participants was analysed using Wang, Head and Archer’s (2000) relationship-building process model for the Web. It was found that Canadian NSOs were receptive to the use of the Web, but their information-gathering and dissemination activities, which make-up the relationship-building process, appear sparse, and in some cases are lagging behind the voluntary sector in the country
The US economy from 1992 to 1998: historical and decomposition simulations with the USAGE model
USAGE is a 500 industry dynamic computable general equilibrium model of the US economy being developed at Monash University in collaboration with the US International Trade Commission. In common with the MONASH model of Australia, USAGE is designed for four modes of analysis: Historical, where we estimate changes in technology and consumer preferences; Decomposition, where we explain periods of economic history in terms of driving factors such as changes in technology and consumer preferences; Forecast, where we derive basecase forecasts for industries, occupations and regions that are consistent with trends from historical simulations and with available expert opinions; and Policy, where we derive deviations from basecase forecast paths caused by assumed policies. This paper reports our first set of historical and decomposition results. The historical results quantify several aspects of technical change in US industries for the period 1992 to 1998 including: intermediate-input-saving technical change; primary-factor-saving technical change; labor-capital bias in technical change; and import- domestic bias in technical change. The historical results also quantify shifts in consumer preferences between commodities. The decomposition results are applied in illustrative analyses of growth in US international trade between 1992 and 1998 and of growth in the US steel industry for this period.
