Theory of the Spatio-Temporal Dynamics of Transport Bifurcations
The development and time evolution of a transport barrier in a magnetically
confined plasma with non-monotonic, nonlinear dependence of the anomalous flux
on mean gradients is analyzed. Upon consideration of both the spatial
inhomogeneity and the gradient nonlinearity of the transport coefficient, we
find that the transition develops as a bifurcation front with radially
propagating discontinuity in local gradient. The spatial location of the
transport barrier as a function of input flux is calculated. The analysis
indicates that for powers slightly above threshold, the barrier location
where is the local transition
power threshold and is the neoclassical diffusivity . This result
suggests a simple explanation of the high disruptivity observed in reversed
shear plasmas. The basic conclusions of this theory are insensitive to the

Will Unionism Prosper in Cyber-Space? The Promise of the Internet for Employee Organization
This paper argues that the low cost of information, communication, and interaction on the Web offers trade unions opportunities to improve services and attract members and thus reinvent themselves for the 21st Century. Analyzing current use of the Internet by unions in the United Kingdom and United States, we develop five hypothesis about the impact of the Internet on unions. 1) the Customized Services hypothesis that unions will individualize services; 2) the Cyber-organizing hypothesis that the Web will ease organization and produce virtual minority unions at many non-union firms; 3) the Cyber-democracy hypothesis that the Web will enhance democracy in unions; 4) the Cyber-dispute hypothesis that the Web will become an important space for industrial disputes; and 5) the New Internationalism hypothesis that the Web will strengthen the international labor community. If unions fail to exploit the opportunities on the Web to gain members, we expect other organizations, Internet recruitment sites, specialized advice centers, and the like, to fill the e-union niche.
Dynamics of a 1-D model for the emergence of the plasma edge shear flow layer with momentum conserving Reynolds stress
A one-dimensional version of the second-order transition model based on the
sheared flow amplification by Reynolds stress and turbulence supression by
shearing is presented. The model discussed in this paper includes a form of the
Reynolds stress which explicitly conserves momentum. A linear stability
analysis of the critical point is performed. Then, it is shown that the
dynamics of weakly unstable states is determined by a reduced equation for the
shear flow. In the case in which the flow damping term is diffusive, the
stationary solutions are those of the real Ginzburg-Landau equation.Comment: 21 pages, 8 figure
The opposites task: Using general rules to test cognitive flexibility in preschoolers
A brief narrative description of the journal article, document, or resource. Executive functions play an important role in cognitive development, and during the preschool years especially, children's performance is limited in tasks that demand flexibility in their behavior. We asked whether preschoolers would exhibit limitations when they are required to apply a general rule in the context of novel stimuli on every trial (the "opposites" task). Two types of inhibitory processing were measured: response interference (resistance to interference from a competing response) and proactive interference (resistance to interference from a previously relevant rule). Group data show 3-year-olds have difficulty inhibiting prepotent tendencies under these conditions, whereas 5-year-olds' accuracy is near ceiling in the task. (Contains 4 footnotes and 1 table.
The ALTO project at IPN Orsay
In order to probe neutron rich radioactive noble gases produced by
photo-fission, a PARRNe1 experiment (Production d'Atomes Radioactifs Riches en
Neutrons) has been carried out at CERN. The incident electron beam of 50 MeV
was delivered by the LIL machine: LEP Injector Linac. The experiment allowed to
compare under the same conditions two production methods of radioactive noble
gases: fission induced by fast neutrons and photo-fission. The obtained results
show that the use of the electrons is a promising mode to get intense neutron
rich ion beams. Thereafter, the success of this photo-fission experiment, a
conceptual design for the installation at IPN Orsay of a 50 MeV electron
accelerator close to the PARRNe-2 device has been worked out: ALTO Project.

Mechanisms of Zika virus infection and neuropathogenesis
A spotlight has been focused on the mosquito-borne Zika virus (ZIKV) because of its epidemic outbreak in Brazil and Latin America, as well as the severe neurological manifestations of microcephaly and Guillain–Barré syndrome associated with infection. In this review, we discuss the recent literature on ZIKV-host interactions, including new mechanistic insight concerning the basis of ZIKV-induced neuropathogenesis
High resolution observations of SiO masers: comparing the spatial distribution at 43 and 86 GHz
We present sub-milliarcsecond observations of SiO masers in the late-type
stars IRC +10011 and Chi Cyg. We have used the NRAO Very Long Baseline Array
(VLBA) to map the 43 GHz (v=1, 2 J=1-0) and the 86 GHz (v=1, 2 J=2-1) SiO
masers. All the transitions have been imaged except the v=2 J=2-1 in IRC
+10011. We report the first VLBI map of the v=1 J=2-1 28SiO maser in IRC +10011
as well as the first VLBA images of SiO masers in an S-type Mira variable, Chi
Cyg. In this paper we have focused on the study of the relative spatial
distribution of the different observed lines. We have found that in some cases
the observational results are not reproduced by the current theoretical pumping
models, either radiative or collisional. In particular, for IRC +10011, the v=1
J=1-0 and J=2-1 28SiO lines have different spatial distributions and emitting
region sizes, the J=2-1 emission being located in an outer region of the
envelope. For Chi Cyg, the distributions also differ, but the sizes of the
masing regions are comparable. We suggest that the line overlaps between
ro-vibrational transitions of two abundant molecular species, H2O and 28SiO, is
a possible explanation for the discrepancies found between the observations and
the theoretical predictions. We have introduced this overlapping process in the
calculations of the excitation of the SiO molecule. We conclude that the line
overlaps can strongly affect the excitation of SiO and may reproduce the
unexpected observational results for the two sources studied.Comment: 16 pages, 12 figure
