    Neuronal glucose transporter isoform 3 deficient mice demonstrate features of autism spectrum disorders.

    Neuronal glucose transporter (GLUT) isoform 3 deficiency in null heterozygous mice led to abnormal spatial learning and working memory but normal acquisition and retrieval during contextual conditioning, abnormal cognitive flexibility with intact gross motor ability, electroencephalographic seizures, perturbed social behavior with reduced vocalization and stereotypies at low frequency. This phenotypic expression is unique as it combines the neurobehavioral with the epileptiform characteristics of autism spectrum disorders. This clinical presentation occurred despite metabolic adaptations consisting of an increase in microvascular/glial GLUT1, neuronal GLUT8 and monocarboxylate transporter isoform 2 concentrations, with minimal to no change in brain glucose uptake but an increase in lactate uptake. Neuron-specific glucose deficiency has a negative impact on neurodevelopment interfering with functional competence. This is the first description of GLUT3 deficiency that forms a possible novel genetic mechanism for pervasive developmental disorders, such as the neuropsychiatric autism spectrum disorders, requiring further investigation in humans

    We introduce a new tool, the Deformed TBA (Deformed Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz), to analyze the monodromy problem of the cubic oscillator. The Deformed TBA is a system of five coupled nonlinear integral equations, which in a particular case reduces to the Zamolodchikov TBA equation for the 3-state Potts model. Our method generalizes the Dorey-Tateo analysis of the (monomial) cubic oscillator. We investigate two scalar matter systems, one described by a sixth power potential and the other defined with two scalar fields containing up to the fourth power in the fields.     The impact of the medical school admissions interview: a systematic review

    Background: Interviews are considered an important part of the medical school admissions process but have been critiqued based on bias and reliability concerns since the 1950s. To determine the impact of the interview, this systematic review investigated the characteristics and outcomes of medical students admitted with and without interviews. Methods: We searched four literature databases from inception through August 2022; all studies comparing medical students admitted with and without interviews were included. We excluded studies from outside the medical school setting and non-research reports. We reviewed interview type, study design, quality, and outcomes. Results: Eight studies from five institutions across five countries were included. Six reported no demographic differences between students admitted with and without interviews; one found that more men were admitted without than with semi-structured interviews, and both cohorts had similar academic and clinical performance. Structured interviews admitted students who scored higher on clinical exams and social competence and lower on academic exams. Cohorts admitted with and without structured interviews had similar mental health issues by their final year of medical school. Discussion: This review suggests that students admitted with and without unstructured and semi-structured interviews were similar demographically, academically, and clinically. Moreover, structured interviews selected more socially competent students who performed better clinically but worse academically. Further research is needed to determine the impact of the selection interview in medical school admissions

    Cooperativity and Frustration in Protein-Mediated Parallel Actin Bundles

    We examine the mechanism of bundling of cytoskeletal actin filaments by two representative bundling proteins, fascin and espin. Small-angle X-ray studies show that increased binding from linkers drives a systematic \textit{overtwist} of actin filaments from their native state, which occurs in a linker-dependent fashion. Fascin bundles actin into a continuous spectrum of intermediate twist states, while espin only allows for untwisted actin filaments and fully-overtwisted bundles. Based on a coarse-grained, statistical model of protein binding, we show that the interplay between binding geometry and the intrinsic \textit{flexibility} of linkers mediates cooperative binding in the bundle. We attribute the respective continuous/discontinous bundling mechanisms of fascin/espin to differences in the stiffness of linker bonds themselves.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, figure file has been corrected in v

    Sectioned images and surface models of a cadaver for understanding the free vascularised anterior rib flap

    Background: The purpose of this study is to describe the vascularised anterior rib flap on sectioned images and surface models using Visible Korean for medical education and clinical training in the field of mandibular reconstructive surgery. Materials and methods: Serially sectioned images of the thorax were obtained from a cadaver. Significant structures in the sectioned images were outlined and stacked to create a surface model. Results: The PDF file (8.45 MB) of the assembled models can be downloaded for free from our website (http://vkh.ajou.ac.kr/Products/PDF/Vascularized_anterior_rib_flap.zip). In this file, important anatomical structures related to the vascularised anterior rib flap can be examined in the sectioned images. All surface models and stereoscopic structures of the vascularised anterior rib flap are expressed in real time.
