Work-family balance: The 3-way interaction effect of role demands, collectivism value and ethnicity
Work and family are experienced somewhat differently across culture. This paper examines whether the relationship between role-demands and work-family balance (WFB) experience across ethnicity is influenced by the groups’ collectivism value. A total of 324 female teachers were sampled. Using a hierarchical regression analysis, some support was found that the collectivism value do moderate the role demands-WFB relationship. Moreover, evidence was found that, to some extent, the collectivism moderating influence does vary among the different ethnic groups
Work and Family: The Perception of Balance Among Female Teachers in Northern Malaysia
Women’s participation in paid employment has become a common scenario even in non-western developing countries. For example in Malaysia, the trend is growing although the traditional gender role remains strong in Malaysian society. Even though working, women are still expected to assume major responsibilities at home. Thus, as opposed to men, women in this society face the challenge to satisfactorily balance work and family. This study was carried out to explore how Malaysian women perceive the meaning of a balanced work-family life. Sampling women teachers, the interview findings revealed that work-family balance was mainly perceived in terms of an individual’s ‘ability to fulfill role obligation’ appropriately in both the work and family domains. A few participants also viewed balance in the context of role satisfaction and role interference. Overall, the results support the assumption in the literature that perceptions of work-family experience are not universal, rather, the construct of work-family balance is culture-specific.

Work-family interaction: perceptions concerning balance and role demand
Women’s participation in paid employment has become a common scenario even in non-Western developing countries.Nevertheless, with the differences in the cultural and contextual factors across nations, variations in the work-family experiences are expected. This study was carried out to explore how non-Western Malaysian people perceive the meaning of a balanced work-family life, as well as to identify the types of role demands surfacing in their work and family roles – employing Malaysia women teachers as the study sample. Impact of workplace safety on employee retention using sequential mediation: evidence from the health-care sector
Purpose
This study aims to examine the impact of workplace safety (WPS) on employee retention (ER) in the health-care sector in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJ&K), Pakistan. At the same time, a mediation relationship through job satisfaction (JS) and employee loyalty (EL) was also tested.
Design/methodology/approach
Structured questionnaires were used to collect the data from 300 doctors, using purposive sampling technique analysed using partial least squares (Smart-PLS 3).
Findings
This study’s findings supported all hypotheses, such as WPS has a significant positive relationship with ER. In addition, a mediation relationship between JS and EL was also confirmed. Furthermore, a serial mediation effect of JS and EL between WPS and ER was also confirmed in this study.
Research limitations/implications
This study might not fit organisations from other regions due to regional norms. In the future, this study’s model may be tested on other regions and segments of the health-care sector, such as nurses, management staff and support staff.
Practical implications
The present study is unique because it is based on a newly formulated framework, WPS → JS → EL → ER, under the social exchange theory, which has not been tested before.
Social implications
In a safe environment, doctors will feel relaxed, stay longer and provide better services; resultantly, patients will get better treatment.
Originality/value
This study tested the sequential mediation effect through JS and EL for the first time in ER, which was missing previously, to the best of the authors’ knowledge. This will add more insights to the safety-retention literature in health-care settings. Furthermore, this study is also the first attempt to explore the relationship between WPS and ER in the health-care sector in AJ&K
Exploring work-family balance perception in creative industry
Previous research suggests that employees in the creative industry are likely to hold several jobs, working irregular time, employment are short-term, with little career security and uncertain job prospects, and nevertheless the workforce appears

This study explores how Malaysian creative industries’ related workers view a balanced work-family life. Series of in-depth interviews were conducted on 12 creative industry workers. Data were transcribed and analyse using thematic analysis methods. The results suggest that work-family balance was viewed from several perspectives – role participation, role conflict, and role achievement
