A Hybrid Framework for Sequential Data Prediction with End-to-End Optimization
We investigate nonlinear prediction in an online setting and introduce a
hybrid model that effectively mitigates, via an end-to-end architecture, the
need for hand-designed features and manual model selection issues of
conventional nonlinear prediction/regression methods. In particular, we use
recursive structures to extract features from sequential signals, while
preserving the state information, i.e., the history, and boosted decision trees
to produce the final output. The connection is in an end-to-end fashion and we
jointly optimize the whole architecture using stochastic gradient descent, for
which we also provide the backward pass update equations. In particular, we
employ a recurrent neural network (LSTM) for adaptive feature extraction from
sequential data and a gradient boosting machinery (soft GBDT) for effective
supervised regression. Our framework is generic so that one can use other deep
learning architectures for feature extraction (such as RNNs and GRUs) and
machine learning algorithms for decision making as long as they are
differentiable. We demonstrate the learning behavior of our algorithm on
synthetic data and the significant performance improvements over the
conventional methods over various real life datasets. Furthermore, we openly

Hybrid State Space-based Learning for Sequential Data Prediction with Joint Optimization
We investigate nonlinear prediction/regression in an online setting and
introduce a hybrid model that effectively mitigates, via a joint mechanism
through a state space formulation, the need for domain-specific feature
engineering issues of conventional nonlinear prediction models and achieves an
efficient mix of nonlinear and linear components. In particular, we use
recursive structures to extract features from raw sequential sequences and a
traditional linear time series model to deal with the intricacies of the
sequential data, e.g., seasonality, trends. The state-of-the-art ensemble or
hybrid models typically train the base models in a disjoint manner, which is
not only time consuming but also sub-optimal due to the separation of modeling
or independent training. In contrast, as the first time in the literature, we
jointly optimize an enhanced recurrent neural network (LSTM) for automatic
feature extraction from raw data and an ARMA-family time series model (SARIMAX)
for effectively addressing peculiarities associated with time series data. We
achieve this by introducing novel state space representations for the base
models, which are then combined to provide a full state space representation of
the hybrid or the ensemble. Hence, we are able to jointly optimize both models
in a single pass via particle filtering, for which we also provide the update
equations. The introduced architecture is generic so that one can use other
recurrent architectures, e.g., GRUs, traditional time series-specific models,
e.g., ETS or other optimization methods, e.g., EKF, UKF. Due to such novel
combination and joint optimization, we demonstrate significant improvements in
widely publicized real life competition datasets. We also openly share our code

Etudes on iurids, VI. Further revision of \u3ci\u3eCalchas\u3c/i\u3e Birula, 1899 (Scorpiones: Iuridae), with a description of a new genus and two new species.
Several new Calchas populations are studied from Turkey, including specimens from Hakkari Province, which borders the northern edge of Iraq. A new genus, Neocalchas, gen. nov., and two new species, Calchas anlasi, sp. nov. and C. kosswigi, sp. nov., are described. The two genera, Calchas and Neocalchas, are diagnosed by their hemispermatophore structure, chelal finger dentition, telson morphometrics and setation, and trichobothrial topology of the pedipalp chela. Genus Calchas Birula, 1899 includes four species: C. anlasi, sp. nov., C. birulai, C. kosswigi, sp. nov., and C. nordmanni; genus Neocalchas, gen. nov., includes one species, N. gruberi, comb. nov. New diagnoses for genera Calchas and Neocalchas are provided as well as a key to the species of Calchas
Etudes on Iurids, V. Further Revision of \u3ci\u3eIurus\u3c/i\u3e Thorell, 1876 (Scorpiones: Iuridae), with a Description of a New Genus and Two New Species
Iurus populations from the Aegean area are studied, including the Greek islands of Crete, Karpathos, Kythira, Rhodes, and Samos. A new genus, Protoiurus gen. nov., and two new species, Protoiurus rhodiensis sp. nov. and P. stathiae sp. nov., are described. The two genera, Iurus and Protoiurus, are diagnosed by their hemispermatophore structure; a cladistic analysis based on this structure is presented. Genus Iurus Thorell, 1876 includes three species: I. dekanum, I. dufoureius, and I. kinzelbachi; genus Protoiurus includes five species: P. asiaticus comb. nov., P. kadleci comb. nov., P. kraepelini comb. nov., P. rhodiensis sp. nov., and P. stathiae sp. nov. The type specimen of Chaerilomma dekanum Roewer, 1943 has been studied and determined to be a valid species Iurus dekanum (Roewer, 1943) representing the population from Crete. New diagnoses for subfamilies Calchinae (genus Calchas) and Iurinae (genera Iurus and Protoiurus) are provided as well as keys to the species of Iurus and Protoiurus
Etudes on iurids, VIII. A new \u3cem\u3eProtoiurus\u3c/em\u3e species from the Hıdırellez Cave in Antalya, Turkey (Scorpiones: Iuridae)
A new iurid species, Protoiurus kumlutasi sp. nov. is described from the Hıdırellez Cave, located in the coastal southwestern Antalya Province, Turkey. This species was collected both inside and at the entrance of the cave, and does not exhibit any troglomorphic characteristics. Its closest relative is P. kraepelini, which shares the distinctive shape of pedipalp chela in mature males. The new species can be distinguished from P. kraepelini, however, by its hemispermatophore, which conforms to subtype 1a. Additional hemispermatophores were analyzed from several specimens of P. kraepelini collected in close proximity to its type locality, further endorsing existence of unique subtype 1b in this species. Etudes on iurids, III. Revision of the genus \u3cem\u3eIurus\u3c/em\u3e Thorell, 1876 (Scorpiones: Iuridae), with a description of two new species from Turkey
This revision is based on a comprehensive analysis of largely new, very extensive material encompassing 341 specimens (58 from Greece and 283 from Turkey). The type species Iurus dufoureius (Brullé, 1832) is restricted to Greece. Iurus asiaticus Birula, 1903 is confirmed as a distinct species, limited to eastern Anatolia. Most widespread in southern Turkey is another species, Iurus kraepelini von Ubisch, 1922, which is here restored from synonymy. We also describe two new species from Turkey: Iurus kadleci, sp. nov. from Antalya and Mersin Provinces (sympatric with I. kraepelini), and Iurus kinzelbachi, sp. nov. from İzmir and Aydın Provinces; therefore, fauna of Turkey includes four species of Iurus. Neotypes of I. dufoureius and I. kraepelini, and lectotype and paralectotypes of I. asiaticus are designated. Status of Iurus populations from the eastern Aegean islands of Greece (Fourni, Karpathos, Kasos, Rhodes, Samos, Saria) remains to be determined. A map of the distribution of Iurus is presented, based on 198 localities (79 in Greece and 119 in Turkey)

Additional material of a rare scorpion species Protoiurus kadleci (Kovařík et al., 2010) from Turkey (Antalya Province) was examined, in particular, sexually mature males. New information is presented on the morphometric differences between adult and subadult males of this species, and on the differences between P. kadleci and other species of Protoiurus. An updated diagnosis of P. kadleci is presented, as well as updated key to six species of Protoiurus, and a map showing all known localities
