Murgul bakır madeni ve çevresindeki toprak ve sedimentlerde meydana gelen ağır metal kirliliğinin değerlendirilmesi
Abstract
Aim of study: This study focuses on the changes of heavy metal pollution in soil and sediment.
Study area: The study area covers Murgul district of Artvin located over the Eastern Black Sea region,
Turkey.
Material and method: Sampling areas were determined at distances in the direction of surface flow
along the stream route where waste water was discharged by assuming the Copper Plant as the central
point. A total of 54 soil and 10 sediment samples were taken from sampling points.
Main results: The results of analysis of soil and sediment samples indicated that the mean values of
Copper, Lead and Zinc were remarkably higher than the threshold values and the soil pH decreased as it
moved away from the center point. The contaminated sediments, deposited over the years in the river
bank sediments may act as secondary source of pollution to the covering water column in the river.
Research highlights: Heavy metals from the soil during the rehabilitation activities to be applied in
the mining sites, it is suggested to investigate the phytoremediation techniques, which are very successful
and effective methods both economically and ecologically, and to use appropriate plant species in the
Artvin Coruh University: F10.02.0
Removing heavy metals from the soil with phytoremediation
Environmental pollution is one of the most critical factors adversely affecting human health. Improvement in living standards, the rapid increase of urban populations, and widespread industrial production, all result in the generation of huge amounts of environment-polluting waste. Various methods are used to remove the pollutants generated by industrial activity but most of these methods require advanced technologies, involving a large financial investment and qualified personnel. Taking these costs and overheads into consideration, some economically developed countries have recently started working with phytoremediation (plantbased remediation) which, compared with the alternatives, is a much more environment-friendly waste treatment system. Also known as plant-based remediation, phytoremediation is defined as the use of various plants to stabilize or reduce contamination in the environment. Compared with other remediation technologies, phytoremediation offers the advantages of on-site treatment, aesthetic value, and low costs. Hyperaccumulators such as Indian Mustard (Brassica juncea), Red Fescue (Festucarubra), and Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) are known to absorb heavy metals, releasing them into the atmosphere in the form of gas. This study examines phytoremediation technology, the plant species that could be used for this purpose, and the feasibility of using phytoremediation in Turkey
Investigation of forest fire effects on morel (morchella spp.) mushroom proliferation: a case study of Alucra, Giresun
After each forest fire, which are effective in thousands of hectares of land every year in Turkey, many new plant species appear in
burning areas and many animals start browsing on these areas. Likewise, it is known that many mushroom species intensely emerge
in the area after each fire. Among these species, some species of Morel mushrooms (Morchella spp.), which are consumed all around
the world despite their high price. For that reason, it is a very high potential income source for the local forest villagers. Some kinds
of Morel mushroom species emerge abundantly in burnt areas after forest fires due to sudden changes in soil chemistry and ash
accumulation after the burns of small branches and lives. The aim of this present study is to determine Morel mushroom proliferation
growth potential after burnt of forested land based on the soil pH and organic matter. Our results showed that together with the fire,
the soil pH and accompanying organic matter increased and therefore proliferation of the morel mushroom increased. The soils that
the mushroom was not detected on have either high pH value and low organic matter or high organic matter and low soil pH value
alone. A high soil pH and high organic matter should be presented at the site together. The average organic matter and pH values of
the area which including mushroom exposed to forest fire were found to be 7.25 and 6.71 respectively while the average organic matter
and pH values of the unburned forested area showing same ecological characteristics were found to be 5.65 and 5.98. We conclude
that forest fires, one of the most important natural disasters that cause damage in the forests, can also be used within the scope of
morel mushroom production. Income from mushroom production in the burnt areas will boost the income of local forest villagers and
make an additional financial relief into their limited annual budgets
Effects of forest fires on water sources
Environmental pollution is the most important factor concerning destruction of water, soil and air ecosystems in
the world. Water sources are one of the areas mostly affected by environmental pollution. It is required to obtain sustainable and accurate data concerning water quality so that qualifications, areal and temporal change of
water sources can be understood. Quality of water sources from water basins consisting of forest lands might
deteriorate due to natural disasters, forestry activities and use of forest lands for recreation purposes. Quality of
water from forests which are not destructed or deteriorated due to natural disasters is generally quite high.
Even though forest fires are favorable for the health of forests in the long term, they affect water quality of
streams, lakes and rivers in water basins negatively. Researches reveal that forest fires or incineration of production waste in forests result in increase of chemical element amount on the soil surface. Certain amount of such
elements remain dissolved, while others reach water sources through sediments. It is identified that N, P, K,
Mg, Na, Ca, Mn, Cl and HCO3 concentrations increase 2 to 100 times in these sources. According to statistical
data of the last 25 years, 2070 (on the average) forest fires occured and 11245 ha forest area is burned every year
in our country. These forest fires result in pollution of water sources in addition to major environmental effects
Investigation of the removal of mineral deposit and adjacent soils contaminated with heavy metal ions by using phytoremediation method
Bioremediation and planting have an important place in the recovery process of multimetal contaminated areas as a result of mining activities. Depending on the
environmental and climatic conditions of the study area, it is possible to plant the area
with the right plant species and correct planting techniques, and accordingly, it is
possible to regenerate and regain the ecological, economic and aesthetic values of the
area. Within the scope of the study, some accumulator plants (Helianthus annuus L.,
Ricinus communis, Betula pendula and Populus tremula) were used to improve multimetal contaminated soils.
The study was carried out in two stages. First stage; Phytoremediation study was
carried out in the greenhouse environment by mixing the soil samples brought from
the waste dumping area and forest area around Murgul Copper Enterprise at certain
rates (0, 50, 75 and 100%). In the second stage, 4 different trial plots were created in
the waste dumping area, where the pollution level is high, and the same plant species
were used and phytoremediation study was carried out on-site.
At the end of the study, as a result of the calculation made for single and perennial
plants, the wild castor oil plant, which is one of the plants grown under controlled
conditions in the greenhouse, can be cleaned from the soil when it is grown for
approximately 3.58 years in a row. On the other hand, Pb pollution can reach normal
values by being cleaned as soon as possible (2.34 years) when poplar is grown. The
most effective plant in removing Cu pollution in the greenhouse can be listed as Castor
oil> Sunflower> Poplar> Birch. When the results of the field study are examined, Cu
pollution by wild castor oil plant can be cleaned up to normal levels in the soil in a
short time such as 6.18 years, Pb pollution in 3.10 years and Zn pollution in 4.33 years.
Birch, on the other hand, has the potential to remove Zn pollution in a shorter time
(2.78 years) than the castor oil plant.
The data obtained showed that birch, poplar, sunflower and castor oil plants can be
used in the restoration of mining degraded areas, before afforestation and at the
planting stages
