    Morphological assessment of the stylohyoid complex variations with cone beam computed tomography in a Turkish population

    Background: The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the length, thickness, sagittal and transverse angulations and the morphological variations of the stylohyoid complex (SHC), to assess their probable associations with age and gender, and to investigate the prevalence of it in a wide range of a Turkish sub-population by using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and methods: The CBCT images of the 1000 patients were evaluated retrospectively. The length, thickness, sagittal and transverse angulations, morphological variations and ossification degrees of SHC were evaluated on multiplanar reconstructions (MPR) adnd three-dimensional (3D) volume rendering (3DVR) images. The data were analysed statistically by using nonparametric tests, Pearson’s correlation coefficient, Student’s t test, c2 test and one-way ANOVA. Statistical significance was considered at p < 0.05. Results: It was determined that 684 (34.2%) of all 2000 SHCs were elongated (> 35 mm). The mean sagittal angle value was measured to be 72.24° and the mean transverse angle value was 70.81°. Scalariform shape, elongated type and nodular calcification pattern have the highest mean age values between the morphological groups, respectively. Calcified outline was the most prevalent calcification pattern in males. There was no correlation between length and the calcification pattern groups while scalariform shape and pseudoarticular type were the longest variations. Conclusions: We observed that as the anterior sagittal angle gets wider, SHC tends to get longer. The most observed morphological variations were linear shape, elongated type and calcified outline pattern. Detailed studies on the classification will contribute to the literature.     An anatomical variant: evaluation of accessory canals of the canalis sinuosus using cone beam computed tomography

    Background: The anatomical variation of the anterior superior alveolar nerve described as canalis sinuosus (CS) is a less known structure of anterior maxilla. Due to the fact that it contains anterior superior alveolar nerve as well as veins and arteries, exact localisation of this structure will allow surgeons to avoid complications. Hence, the aim of this study was to verify the presence, reveal the frequency and characteristics of accessory canals of CS.Materials and methods: This study was based on retrospective evaluation of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans. A total of 1460 CBCT images were analysed and collected data were noted. The following parameters were recorded: age, sex, presence or absence of CS, location in relation to the adjacentteeth and impaction of canine teeth.Results: A total of 6668 accessory canals were found in 1460 CBCT images. Of these, 672 (46.0%) were from female patients, and 788 (54.0%) were from male patients. 1034 (70.8%) of 1460 images had at least one accessory canal of CS. Maxillary intercentral region is the area where accessory canals were seen mostfrequently (n = 653, 44.72%).Conclusions: Canalis sinuosus is a bony canal which is incidentally found and less known structure of anterior portion of maxilla. Knowing the accessory canals deriving from this structure will allow surgeons to avoid complications and non-integration after dental implant procedures. Conventional imaging modalities have limited value in detecting this neurovascular structures. Therefore CBCT may have an important role for accurate diagnosis to reveal anatomical variations

    Cross-sectional evaluation of the periapical status as related to quality of root canal fillings and coronal restorations in a rural adult male population of Turkey

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>To determine the prevalence of periapical lesions in root canal-treated teeth in a rural, male adult, Turkish population and to investigate the influence of the quality of root canal fillings on prevalence of periapical lesions.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The sample for this cross-sectional study consisted of 552 adult male patients, 18-32 years of age, presenting consecutively as new patients seeking routine dental care at the Dental Sciences of Gulhane Military Medicine, Ankara. The radiographs of the 1014 root canal-treated teeth were evaluated. The teeth were grouped according to the radiographic quality of the root canal filling and the coronal restoration. The criteria used for the examination were slightly modified from those described by De Moor. Periapical status was assessed by the Periapical Index scores (PAI) proposed by Orstavik.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The overall success rate of root canal treatment was 32.1%. The success rates of adequately root canal treatment were significantly higher than inadequately root canal treatment, regardless of the quality or presence of the coronal restoration (P < .001). In addition, the success rate of inadequate root canal treatment was also significantly affected by the quality of coronal restorations.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our results revealed a high prevalence of periapical lesions in root canal treatment, which is comparable to that reported in other methodologically compatible studies from diverse geographical locations. In addition, the results from the present study confirm the findings of other studies that found the quality of the root canal treatment to be a key factor for prognosis with or without adequate coronal restoration.</p

    PROSTHETIC COMPLICATIONS IN IMPLANT SUPPORTED FIXED PROSTHESIS: A FOUR YEAR MULTI-CENTER RETROSPECTIVE ANALYSIS

    There have been many materials and application methods developed in order to overcome the complications related with implant supported restorations. Prosthetic failures still could emerge in spite of all advanced applications. One of the most common reasons of a prosthetic failure was shown to be the excessive occlusal forces. Excessive occlusal forces may cause prosthetic complications or component fractures as well as with progressive crestal bone loss. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the prosthetic complications of the implant supported fixed prosthesis followed up to four years. A Cox proportional hazard regression analysis was used to evaluate possible associations. Long bridges and single tooth crowns were associated with porcelain fracture (p<0.01, HR: 4.46) and cement loosening (p<0.05 HR: 3.22) respectively. Care must be given to occlusal alignment of the implant supported crowns/bridges to overcome long-term complications. Key Words: Implant prosthesis, prosthetic failures, retrospective analysis

    Experimental Lactococcus garvieae infection in rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, Walbaum 1792: a comparative histopathological and immunohistochemical study

    WOS: 000334071700007PubMed ID: 23957738The aim of this study was to induce Lactococcus garvieae infection in young and adult fish through different routes [intraperitoneal (IP) and immersion (IM)] and to investigate the pathogenesis and histopathological and immunohistochemical findings comparatively. For this purpose, a total of 180 rainbow trout (90 young, 20 +/- 5g and 90 adult, 80 +/- 10g) obtained from a commercial fish farm were used. The fish were divided into eight groups, four experimental groups (Young-Adult IP groups and Young-Adult IM groups, each contain 30 fish) and four control groups (Young-Adult IP Control groups and Young-Adult IM control groups, each contain 15 fishes). The experimental study was conducted using L.garvieae, and confirmatory identification was performed by PCR. The sequence result of the PCR amplicon of 16S rDNA from isolate L.garvieae LAC1 was determined and deposited in the GenBank database under accession number . Fish in the IP groups were intraperitoneally administered an inoculate containing 10(6)cfumL(-1) bacteria 0.1mL. In the IM groups, fish were kept in inoculated water containing 10(8)cfumL(-1) bacteria for 20min. Mortality as well as clinical and pathological findings was recorded daily, and significant differences in macroscopic and microscopic results were observed between the IP and IM administration groups. All tissue samples were immunohistochemically stained by the avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex and immunofluorescence (IF) methods using polyclonal antibody to detect L.garvieae antigens. In immunoperoxidase staining in the IP groups, positive reactions to bacterial antigens were most commonly seen in the spleen, kidney, heart, liver, peritoneum and swim bladder. In the IM groups, bacterial antigens were most commonly found in the eye, gill, spleen and kidney. In the IF method, the distribution of antigens in tissue and organs was similar to the reactions with immunoperoxidase staining.
