Learning to See Forces: Surgical Force Prediction with RGB-Point Cloud Temporal Convolutional Networks
Robotic surgery has been proven to offer clear advantages during surgical
procedures, however, one of the major limitations is obtaining haptic feedback.
Since it is often challenging to devise a hardware solution with accurate force
feedback, we propose the use of "visual cues" to infer forces from tissue
deformation. Endoscopic video is a passive sensor that is freely available, in
the sense that any minimally-invasive procedure already utilizes it. To this
end, we employ deep learning to infer forces from video as an attractive
low-cost and accurate alternative to typically complex and expensive hardware
solutions. First, we demonstrate our approach in a phantom setting using the da
Vinci Surgical System affixed with an OptoForce sensor. Second, we then
validate our method on an ex vivo liver organ. Our method results in a mean
absolute error of 0.814 N in the ex vivo study, suggesting that it may be a
promising alternative to hardware based surgical force feedback in endoscopic
procedures.Comment: MICCAI 2018 workshop, CARE(Computer Assisted and Robotic Endoscopy
The Early Bird Catches The Term: Combining Twitter and News Data For Event Detection and Situational Awareness
Twitter updates now represent an enormous stream of information originating
from a wide variety of formal and informal sources, much of which is relevant
to real-world events. In this paper we adapt existing bio-surveillance
algorithms to detect localised spikes in Twitter activity corresponding to real
events with a high level of confidence. We then develop a methodology to
automatically summarise these events, both by providing the tweets which fully
describe the event and by linking to highly relevant news articles. We apply
our methods to outbreaks of illness and events strongly affecting sentiment. In
both case studies we are able to detect events verifiable by third party
sources and produce high quality summaries
Educational Strategies to Promote Adherence to Treatment in Patients with Cardiovascular Disease
Introduction: Educational material is a key strategy for primary health care promotion. Purpose: To design and validate educational material adapted to the population and aimed to increase knowledge about adherence to the treatment of arterial hypertension and diabetes mellitus. Methodology: Methodological study for the design of educational material for people with diabetes mellitus and high blood pressure. For the design, content validity tests were carried out, with the participation of six experts in health education and six patients with chronic diseases. Validation was performed pursuant to the attraction, understanding, engagement, and acceptance criteria. Results: The validation confirmed that all items and criteria were above the minimal expected range. Conclusion: The design and validation of educational material provide elements that improve the education of patients about their pathologies and their adherence to treatment
Cyclic brightening in the short-period WZ Sge-type cataclysmic variable SDSS J080434.20+510349.2
We have observed a new cataclysmic variable (CV) SDSS J080434.20+510349.2 and
study the origin of a long-term variability found in its light curve.
Multi-longitude time-resolved photometric observations were carried out to
analyze the uncommon behavior also found recently in two newly discovered CVs.
This study of SDSS J080434.20+510349.2 mainly concerns the understanding of the
nature of the observed double-humped light curve and its relation to a cyclic
brightening occurring during quiescence. The observations were obtained early
in 2007, when the object was at about V~17.1, 0.4 mag brighter than the
pre-outburst magnitude. The light curve shows a sinusoidal variability with an
amplitude of about 0.07 mag and a periodicity of 42.48 min, which is half of
the orbital period of the system. In addition, we have observed two
"mini-outbursts" of the system up to 0.6 mag, with a duration of about 4 days
each. The "mini-outburst" had a symmetric profile and repeated in about 32
days. Subsequent monitoring of the system shows a cyclical behaviour of such
"mini-outbursts" with a similar recurrence period. The origin of the
double-humped light curve and the periodic brightening is discussed in the
light of the evolutionary state of SDSS J080434.20+510349.2.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, Accepted by A&A, typos added, figure correcte
