Commentators on Psalm 18 commonly regard vv 4-20 (a prayer of thanksgiving for deliverance from danger) and vv 30-46 (a victory song of a warrior king) as having originally circulated as independent units. A., for his part, considers vv 21-28 to be a redactional satire, while vv 29-31 serve to introduce the royal victory song. A. notes verbal and thematic connections between Ps 18:21-31 and the canonically-preceding and following Psalms (15-17 and 19-21); e.g., Ps 18:21-31 reflects the Torah theology of Ps 19:8-15, just as Ps 18:51 resembles Ps 20:7 in referring to the king as God's anointed. The editor of Book I of the Psalter presents David as Yahweh's servant (Ps 18:1), a title shared by the one who prays in Ps 19:12,14. 'The salvation granted to `David' thereby becomes an exemplar of the salvation of the `humbled people,' so that all the `poor' can reread their own story--both individually and collectively--through that of the royal psalmist' (p. 35). The article concludes with a substantial bibliography (pp. 35-40).[Abstracted by: Jeremy Corely.]
