Polariton quantum boxes in semiconductor microcavities

    Get PDF
We report on the realization of polariton quantum boxes in a semiconductor microcavity under strong coupling regime. The quantum boxes consist of mesas that confine the cavity photon, etched on top of the spacer of a microcavity. For mesas with sizes of the order of a few micron in width and nm in depth, we observe quantization, caused by the lateral confinement, of the polariton modes in several peaks. We evidence the strong exciton-photon coupling regime through a typical/clear anticrossing curve for each quantized level. Moreover the growth technique is of high quality, which opens the way for the conception of new optoelectronic devices

The food crisis in the aftermath of the nuclear contamination following from the March 2011 disaster has prompted the Japanese authorities to issue emergency measures to protect the population. However, consumers did not always react according to governmental decisions. In fact, their behavior has been rather affected by their own perception of the event and its consequences - perception that has been shaped by their education background, their access to information, their location, etc. As a result, not only their relationship with food, but also their ways of consumption, have been undergoing changes. From direct observations conducted in Japan, press analysis and results of the initial consumers’ surveys, this article analyzes the reconstruction process of food safety norms in Japan, as well as the establishment of a new relationship between men and their region after the disaster

Introduction : villes, cultures urbaines et géographies

Electric sampling of soot particles in spreading non-premixed flames: methodology and influence of gravity

    Get PDF
Finer strategies of spacecraft fire mitigation require more experimental data related to fire detection. Fire detection systems developed on Earth rely massively on the optical detection of soot particles, which are present in the smoke. To detect the fire correctly, it is thus important to know how the optical properties of these particles are affected in reduced gravity. With different transport processes and increased residence time, soot in reduced gravity can be different from those produced at normal gravity. As their optical properties are related to their morphological properties, a better understanding about the evolution of soot particle morphology in flames under microgravity conditions is required. Within this context, a novel technique of soot sampling using electric field is applied to a spreading non-premixed flame at normal and micro-gravity. The soot particles sampled are observed subsequently under Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). Density, soot particle projected area, radius of gyration, fractal dimension, and primary particle size are extracted and the influence of gravity is investigated with the evolution of these morphological properties within the flame. Though the present study cannot be conclusive in itself, the similarity between the evolution of the optical density measured throughout the flame just before the electric perturbation required by the sampling technique and the evolution of the amount of soot deposited due to the electric perturbation along the sampling plates supports the future works that need to be devoted to further assess the consistency of the technique

In our article we try to approximate to the topic of Spanish romanticism and the cosmovision of Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer in particular. We evaluate the role of universal romantic symptom – the feeling of loneliness in Bécquer’s Rimas and observe how his poetic world is linked to the existensial vision of Miguel de Unamuno.

Cardiopulmonary exercise testing is a better outcome predictor than exercise echocardiography in asymptomatic aortic stenosis.

BACKGROUND: Objective assessment of maximal aerobic capacity using peak oxygen consumption (peak VO2) can be helpful in the management of patients with asymptomatic aortic stenosis (AS). The relationship between peak VO2 and AS severity criteria derived from rest and supine exercise echocardiography (SEE) has never been explored. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to determine whether low peak VO2 (3m/s) and left ventricle ejection fraction>50% prospectively underwent resting and SEE and cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPX). RESULTS: Peak VO2 was lower than expected (21.9+/-7.4mL/kg/min), i.e. /=85% had a negative predictive value of 97%. CONCLUSION: CPX detects a high proportion of false asymptomatic AS patients with poorer outcome that cannot be predicted by SEE markers of AS severity. Assessment of aerobic capacity should be part of current approach within a "watchful waiting" strategy.Peer reviewe
