    Quantitative Observation of Magnetic Flux Distribution in New Magnetic Films for Future High Density Recording Media

    International audienceOff-axis electron holography was used to observe and quantify the magnetic microstructure of a perpendicular magnetic anisotropic (PMA) recording media. Thin foils of PMA materials exhibit an interesting up and down domain configuration. These domains are found to be very stable and were observed at the same time with their stray field, closing magnetic flux in the vacuum. The magnetic moment can thus be determined locally in a volume as small as few tens of cubic nanometers

    In the past two centuries the proportion of couples using some form of conscious pregnancy-prevention has risen from close to zero to about two-thirds. In European populations this radical change in behaviour occurred largely between 1870 and 1930 without the benefit of highly effective methods. In Asia, Africa and Latin America, the change took place after 1950 since when the global fertility rate has halved from 5.0 births to 2.5 births per woman. In this chapter we describe the controversies surrounding the idea of birth control and the role of early pioneers such as Margaret Sanger; the advances in contraceptive and abortion technologies; the ways in which family planning has been promoted by many governments, particularly in Asia; trends in use of specific methods; the problems of discontinuation of use; and the incidence of unintended pregnancies and abortions

    Magnon magnetoresistance of NiFe nanowires: size dependence and domain wall detection

    International audienceThe magnetoresistance of permalloy (Ni84Fe16) nanowires of various widths (down to 50nm) has been measured for fields applied along the wires. The enhancement of the shape anisotropy in the narrowest widths leads to the disappearance of the anisotropic magnetoresistance signal, the remaining contribution to the magnetoresistance being that of the magnons.     Room-temperature ferroelectric switching of spin-to-charge conversion in germanium telluride

    The development of spintronic devices has been limited by the poor compatibility between semiconductors and ferromagnetic sources of spin. The broken inversion symmetry of some semiconductors may allow for spin–charge interconversion, but its control by electric fields is volatile. This has led to interest in ferroelectric Rashba semiconductors, which combine semiconductivity, large spin–orbit coupling and non-volatility. Here we report room-temperature, non-volatile ferroelectric control of spin-to-charge conversion in epitaxial germanium telluride films. We show that ferroelectric switching by electrical gating is possible in germanium telluride, despite its high carrier density. We also show that spin-to-charge conversion has a similar magnitude to what is observed with platinum, but the charge current sign is controlled by the orientation of ferroelectric polarization. Comparison between theoretical and experimental data suggests that the inverse spin Hall effect plays a major role in switchable conversion
