    A Very Long Foreign Body in the Bladder

    In the urinary tract, foreign body is most commonly found in the urinary bladder. But it is anatomically very difficult for a man to self-insert a long object into the urinary bladder. Here we report a case of a 49-year-old Japanese man who has inserted a 140-cm vinyl tube in the bladder for masturbation. He could not retrieve it, and the bladder foreign body remained in this position for about two years. He was referred to our hospital and open surgery was performed

    Unified study of viscoelasticity and sound damping in hard and soft amorphous solids

    Recent research has made significant progress in understanding the non-phonon vibrational states present in amorphous materials. It has been established that their vibrational density of states follows non-Debye scaling laws. Here, we show that the non-Debye scaling laws play a crucial role in determining material properties of a broad range of amorphous solids, from ``hard" amorphous solids like structural glasses to ``soft" amorphous solids such as foams and emulsions. We propose a unified framework of viscoelasticity and sound damping for these materials. Although these properties differ significantly between hard and soft amorphous solids, they are determined by the non-Debye scaling laws.     Stress relaxation above and below the jamming transition

    We numerically investigate stress relaxation in soft athermal disks to reveal critical slowing down when the system approaches the jamming point. The exponents describing the divergence of the relaxation time differ dramatically depending on whether the transition is approached from the jammed or unjammed phase. This contrasts sharply with conventional dynamic critical scaling scenarios, where a single exponent characterizes both sides. We explain this surprising difference in terms of the vibrational density of states (vDOS), which is a key ingredient of linear viscoelastic theory. The vDOS exhibits an extra slow mode that emerges below jamming, which we utilize to demonstrate the anomalous exponent below jamming.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Unexpected outcome after sclerotherapy of simple renal cyst

    BACKGROUND: Simple renal cysts usually have benign clinical features. We report a rare case of papillary renal cell carcinoma (RCC) associated with a large recurrent simple cyst following sclerotherapy. CASE PRESENTATION: A 47-year-old Japanese woman received minocycline sclerotherapy for a large (9 cm in diameter) simple left renal cyst in May 2005. The cyst regrew, and second-line sclerotherapy with ethanol was performed in November 2005. Three years later, she developed papillary RCC on the wall of the recurrent renal cyst. Radical nephrectomy was performed, but the patient died of metastatic disease 15 months after surgery. CONCLUSION: Malignant transformation from recurrent simple renal cyst to RCC may occur in the years following sclerotherapy, underscoring the need for long-term follow-up

    Early endovascular stenting for extracranial carotid artery dissection with angiographic flow stasis: A series of four cases

    Extracranial carotid artery dissection is a major cause of ischemic stroke in young patients. Progressive stroke or recurrent ischemic symptoms may occur despite adequate medical treatment. Our treatment policy for these conditions is based on the fact that immediate vascular reconstruction is necessary in the cases with angiographic flow stasis in the true lumen beyond the dissection site. We report our experiences with four consecutive extracranial carotid artery dissections successfully treated with early endovascular stenting and discuss the indication of this treatment with a special emphasis on the angiographic findings
