    To provide a strong motivation for students to learn multivariate statistics and the multivariate way of thinking, this paper uses an easily understandable example of ascertaining the effect of educational attainment on migration propensity in Japan. With cross-tabulations and a logistic model, we demonstrate the necessity of the multivariate approach by showing that the control for the effect of gender is indispensable for revealing the true effect of educational attainment. We further identify two conditions under which valid inference about the effect of a factor depends critically on the control for another factor.     Hadronic decays of Ba1(1260)b1(1235)B \to a_1(1260) b_1(1235) in the perturbative QCD approach

    We calculate the branching ratios and polarization fractions of the Ba1b1B \to a_1 b_1 decays in the perturbative QCD(pQCD) approach at leading order, where a1a_1(b1b_1) stands for the axial-vector a1(1260)[b1(1235)]a_1(1260)[b_1(1235)] state. By combining the phenomenological analyses with the perturbative calculations, we find the following results: (a) the large decay rates around 10510^{-5} to 10610^{-6} of the Ba1b1B \to a_1 b_1 decays dominated by the longitudinal polarization(except for the B+b1+a10B^+ \to b_1^+ a_1^0 mode) are predicted and basically consistent with those in the QCD factorization(QCDF) within errors, which are expected to be tested by the Large Hadron Collider and Belle-II experiments. The large B0a10b10B^0 \to a_1^0 b_1^0 branching ratio could provide hints to help explore the mechanism of the color-suppressed decays. (b) the rather different QCD behaviors between the a1a_1 and b1b_1 mesons result in the destructive(constructive) contributions in the nonfactorizable spectator diagrams with a1(b1)a_1(b_1) emission. Therefore, an interesting pattern of the branching ratios appears for the color-suppressed B0a10a10,a10b10,B^0 \to a_1^0 a_1^0, a_1^0 b_1^0, and b10b10b_1^0 b_1^0 modes in the pQCD approach, Br(B0b10b10)>Br(B0a10b10)Br(B0a10a10)Br(B^0 \to b_1^0 b_1^0) > Br(B^0 \to a_1^0 b_1^0) \gtrsim Br(B^0 \to a_1^0 a_1^0), which is different from Br(B0b10b10)Br(B0a10b10)Br(B0a10a10)Br(B^0 \to b_1^0 b_1^0) \sim Br(B^0 \to a_1^0 b_1^0) \gtrsim Br(B^0 \to a_1^0 a_1^0) in the QCDF and would be verified at future experiments. (c) the large naive factorization breaking effects are observed in these Ba1b1B \to a_1 b_1 decays. Specifically, the large nonfactorizable spectator(weak annihilation) amplitudes contribute to the B0b1+a1(B+a1+b10  and  B+b1+a10)B^0 \to b_1^+ a_1^-(B^+ \to a_1^+ b_1^0\; {\rm and}\; B^+ \to b_1^+ a_1^0) mode(s), which demand confirmations via the precise measurements.Comment: 13 pages, 1 figure, 5 tables, revtex fil

    An inverted J-shaped association of serum uric acid with muscle strength among Japanese adult men: a cross-sectional study

    BACKGROUND: Uric acid (UA) may protect muscle function from oxidative damage due to reactive oxygen species through its powerful antioxidant capacity. However, several studies have demonstrated that hyperuricemia is closely related to systemic inflammation and has oxidant properties effects, both of which may increase the risk of muscle strength loss. The purpose of this study was to examine the association of serum UA concentration with grip strength and leg extension power in adult men. METHODS: This study is a cross-sectional survey in which 630 Japanese male employees aged 30 years and older participated. Five hundred and eighty-six subjects participated in the measurement of grip strength, and 355 subjects participated in the measurement of leg extension power. Blood samples were obtained for serum UA analysis. RESULTS: After adjustment for potential confounders, grip strength differed significantly between participants with and those without hyperuricemia (geometric mean and 95% confidence interval [CI]: 40.3 [39.2–41.3] kg vs. 41.9 [41.3–42.5] kg; P = 0.01). In addition, serum UA levels (quartiles) showed an inverted J-shaped curve with grip strength (mean and 95% CI: Q1, 41.6 [40.6–42.6] kg; Q2, 42.2 [41.2–43.2] kg; Q3, 41.8 [40.8–42.8] kg; Q4, 40.4 [39.3–41.4] kg; P for quadratic trend = 0.05). The results in the leg extension power group were similar to those observed in the grip strength group. CONCLUSION: This population-based cross-sectional study shows for the first time that hyperuricemia is associated with poor muscle strength. Moreover, the results indicate an inverted J-shaped association between serum UA quartiles and muscle strength

    Abnormal Cardiac Repolarization After Seizure Episodes in Structural Brain Diseases: Cardiac Manifestation of Electrical Remodeling in the Brain?

    Background: Abnormal cardiac repolarization is observed in patients with epilepsy and can be associated with sudden death. We investigated whether structural brain abnormalities are correlated with abnormal cardiac repolarizations in patients with seizure or epilepsy. Methods and Results: We retrospectively analyzed and compared 12-lead ECG parameters following seizures between patients with and without structural brain abnormalities. A total of 96 patients were included: 33 women (17 with and 16 without brain abnormality) and 63 men (44 with and 19 without brain abnormality). Brain abnormalities included past stroke, chronic hematoma, remote bleeding, tumor, trauma, and postsurgical state. ECG parameters were comparable for heart rate, PR interval, and QRS duration between groups. In contrast, corrected QT intervals evaluated by Fridericia, Framingham, and Bazett formulas were prolonged in patients with brain abnormality compared with those without (women: Fridericia [normal versus abnormal], 397.4±32.7 versus 470.9±48.9; P=0.002; Framingham, 351.0±40.1 versus 406.2±46.1; P=0.002; Bazett, 423.8±38.3 versus 507.7±56.6; P<0.0001; men: Fridericia, 403.8±30.4 versus 471.0±47.1; P<0.0001; Framingham, 342.7±36.4 versus 409.4±45.8; P<0.0001; Bazett, 439.3±38.6 versus 506.2±56.8; P<0.0001). QT dispersion and Tpeak-Tend intervals were comparable between groups. We also observed abnormal ST-segment elevation in 5 patients. Importantly, no patients showed fatal arrhythmias during or after seizures. Conclusions: Our study demonstrated that brain abnormalities can be associated with abnormal cardiac repolarization after seizures, which might be a manifestation of electrophysiological remodeling in the brain

    Carrier conversion from terahertz wave to dual-wavelength near-infrared light injection-locking to optical comb using asynchronous nonpolarimetric electro-optic downconversion with electro-optic polymer modulator

    THz waves are promising wireless carriers for next-generation wireless communications, where a seamless connection from wireless to optical communication is required. In this study, we demonstrate carrier conversion from THz waves to dual-wavelength NIR light injection-locking to an optical frequency comb using asynchronous nonpolarimetric electro-optic downconversion with an electro-optic polymer modulator. THz wave in the W band was obtained as a stable photonic RF beat signal of 1 GHz with a signal-to-noise ratio of 25 dB via the proposed THz-to-NIR carrier conversion. In addition, the results imply the potential of the photonic detection of THz waves for wireless-to-optical seamless communication.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figure

    Association of antithrombin with development of trauma-induced disseminated intravascular coagulation and outcomes

    IntroductionTrauma activates the innate immune system to modulate hemostasis and minimize the damage caused by physiological bodily responses, including the activation of coagulation. Sufficiently severe trauma overwhelms physiological responses and elicits the systemic inflammatory response syndrome, which leads to the onset of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), characterized by dysregulated inflammatory coagulofibrinolytic responses. Impaired anticoagulant mechanisms, including antithrombin, constitutes the pathology of DIC, while the dynamics of antithrombin and relevance to outcomes in trauma-induced coagulopathy have not been fully elucidated. This study investigated the associations of antithrombin activity with DIC onset and outcomes in severely injured patients.MethodsThis retrospective sub-analysis of a multicenter, prospective study included patients with an injury severity score ≥16. We characterized trauma patients with low antithrombin activity (antithrombin &lt;80% on hospital arrival, n = 75) in comparison with those who had normal antithrombin activity (antithrombin ≥80%, n = 200). Global markers of coagulation and fibrinolysis, molecular biomarkers for thrombin generation (soluble fibrin [SF]), and markers of anticoagulation (antithrombin) were evaluated to confirm the associations of antithrombin with DIC development and outcomes, including in-hospital mortality and the multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS).ResultsPatients with low antithrombin activity had higher prevalence of shock, transfusion requirements, and in-hospital mortality. Higher DIC scores and more severe organ dysfunction were observed in the low AT group compared to that in the normal AT group. Antithrombin activity on arrival at the hospital was an independent predictor of the development of DIC in trauma patients, and levels of SF increased with lower antithrombin values (antithrombin activity &gt; 85%). Antithrombin activity at 3 h showed good predictive performance for in-hospital mortality, and a multivariable Cox proportional-hazard regression model with a cross-product term between the antithrombin and DIC showed that the in-hospital mortality in patients with DIC increased with decreased antithrombin activity. A multivariable logistic regression model showed that the odds for the development of MODS in patients with DIC increased with lower antithrombin values.ConclusionDecreased antithrombin activity in trauma-induced coagulopathy is associated with poor outcomes through worsening of DIC

    Changes in serum antibody titers after vaccination for COVID-19 and evaluation of post-vaccination health conditions

     Introduction: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccine has preventive effects and high immunogenicity, but the outcomes of vaccination have not been widely reported. The goal of this study was to examine serum antibody titers before and after vaccination and to evaluate post-vaccination health conditions. Methods: The subjects were 2,304 medical workers (mean age 41 years) at Kawasaki Gakuen who agreed to participate in the study and underwent COVID-19 vaccination, beginning in March 2021. Serum IgG antibody titers for SARS-CoV-2 spike protein were measured before the first vaccination and 4 weeks after the second vaccination. Health conditions were observed for 4 weeks after the second vaccination. Results: The rates of seroconversion, seroprotection, and change in geometric mean antibody titer at 4 weeks after the second vaccination were 99.9%, 99.9%, and 2,685.5 (95% CI 587.8-5,319.2), respectively, suggesting high immunogenicity. After the first vaccination, pain, enlargement, and reddening occurred at the local injection site, and systemic side effects included fatigue, headache, physical pain, chill, nausea, and fever. After the second vaccination, the incidence of pain decreased, but those of other events increased. There were no serious side effects requiring hospitalization. In logistic regression analysis, sex, age, fever,chill, and lymph node enlargement after the second vaccination were associated with a change in antibody titer. Conclusions: Serum antibody titers suggested high immunogenicity of the COVID-19 vaccine and a health condition survey confirmed the safety of the vaccine. Systemic side effects may serve as an index of immunization (acquisition of antibody) by the vaccine

    Skin advanced glycation end product accumulation and muscle strength among adult men

    Aging is associated with decreased skeletal muscle function. Increased levels of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) in skeletal muscle tissue are observed with advancing age and in diabetes. Although serum AGE level is negatively associated with grip strength in elderly people, it is unknown whether this association is present in adult males. To determine the relationship between AGE accumulation in tissue and muscle strength and power among Japanese adult men. Skin autofluorescence (AF) (a noninvasive method for measuring tissue AGEs), grip strength (n = 232), and leg extension power (n = 138) were measured in Japanese adult men [median (interquartile range) age, 46.0 (37.0, 56.0) years]. After adjustment for potential confounders, the adjusted means [95% confidence interval (CI)] for grip strength across the tertiles of skin AF were 44.5 (43.2, 45.9) kg for the lowest tertile, 42.0 (40.6, 43.3) kg for the middle tertile, and 41.7 (40.3, 43.1) kg for the highest tertile (P for trend < 0.01). Moreover, the adjusted geometric means (95% CI) of leg extension power across the tertiles of skin AF were 17.8 (16.6, 19.1) W/kg for the lowest tertile, 17.5 (16.4, 18.7) W/kg for the middle tertile, and 16.0 (14.9, 17.1) W/kg for the highest tertile (P for trend = 0.04). Among Japanese adult men, participants with higher skin AF had lower muscle strength and power, indicating a relationship between AGE accumulation and muscle strength and power. A long-term prospective study is required to clarify the causality
