    A Survey of Children’s and Young Adult Literature Collections in Academic Libraries of Christian Higher Education

    Children’s and young adult literature collections have an important place in an academic library. Most often, these collections go unnoticed by many in academia, who may regard children’s literature as irrelevant to the mission of the academic library. In reality, these important collections support institutional curriculum and include interdisciplinary resources used in many academic departments. Findings are reported of a survey conducted of private Christian colleges and universities regarding their management of children’s and young adult literature collections which seeks to identify current practices and procedures being utilized.     To Frame or Not To Frame: Creating a Metaliteracy Course for Online Ed.D. Students

    The purpose of this study is to create a course in a learning management system (LMS), Canvas, for online Ed.D. students and determine if the course can improve scores measuring metaliteracy concepts from pretest to posttest. The course assessed knowledge of metaliteracy goals and objectives instead of using the ACRL Framework. This paper reports on the creation of the course, results of the pretest-posttest, a mapping of metaliteracy goals and objectives with the ACRL Framework, and recommendations for including metacognitive practices in library instruction.The researcher used a quantitative, quasi-experimental, exploratory design and developed a metaliteracy course in the Canvas LMS using a pretest-posttest design, creating video tutorials as the treatment for each module (five total) using Adobe Spark.According to a t-test run in SPSS, there was a significant difference between the metaliteracy pretest and metaliteracy posttest. Using metaliteracy goals and objectives as a method for assessing information literacy knowledge can be useful. Using the ACRL Framework along with metaliteracy goals and objectives can be effective for presenting and assessing information literacy knowledge and skills.One limitation of this study was the use of one population of online Ed.D. students at one institution. One implication of this study is the need for metaliteracy goals and objectives to be used in connection with the ACRL Framework.This research adds to the limited knowledge of how metaliteracy goals and objectives can be used to assess information literacy and other literacies using a pretest-posttest design in an online format

    The Relationship Between Metaliteracy Pretest, Posttest, and Metacognitive Strategies for Library Research Skills Scale: Creating a Metaliteracy Course for Online Ed.D. Students

    The purpose of this quantitative, quasi-experimental, exploratory study was to create a metaliteracy course for online Ed.D. students and determine if there was a relationship between the Metacognitive Strategies for Library Research Skills Scale, Metaliteracy Pretest, and Metaliteracy Posttest. Library literature is lacking on assessment of information literacy skills as determined by a new term, metaliteracy, and the goals and objectives associated with this new term. A course was created in the researcher’s institution’s learning management system, Canvas, using metaliteracy goals and objectives. The researcher developed a pretest and posttest using the goals and objectives of metaliteracy to assess students’ knowledge of these concepts. The treatment was the researcher’s development of video tutorials to explain metaliteracy concepts and skills that were watched after the pretest and before the posttest. A dependent t-test revealed that there was a statistically significant difference between pretest and posttest. The results of the partial correlation to determine if a relationship existed between MS-LRSS and metaliteracy posttest after controlling for metaliteracy pretest were not significant. Similarly, the bivariate regression revealed that MS-LRSS could not predict metaliteracy posttest. A forward regression model revealed that metaliteracy pretest could reliably predict metaliteracy posttest

    Surviving Oncology: Living With Cancer in the Wake of Integrative Care

    This dissertation analyzes the emerging medical field of integrative oncology, attending to how this approach to cancer treatment unsettles and reconfigures existing biomedical ideas about bodies and cancer. Informed by twelve months of multi-sited ethnographic study conducted in the state of California, it examines the attempts made by integrative practitioners to provide whole patient care by incorporating complementary medicines such as Ayurveda and Chinese medicine into conventional oncology. I suggest that this approach enacts a kind of sensitivity for how cancer is lived as a disease conditioned by emotional, psychological, social, and environmental factors, requiring treatments attentive to these dimensions. Throughout this study I grapple with the intentions of integrative oncologists and the realities of the political economy of medicine and insurance in the United States that leaves integrative care out of the reach of most people, producing a situation where many are strained to imagine different ways of surviving oncology. At the core of this project is a concern for what it means and what it takes to live well with cancer in biomedicine

    Effects of Decentering and Non-judgement on Body Dissatisfaction and Negative Affect Among Young Adult Women

    This dataset provides cross-sectional, quantitative data from 330 female participants aged 18–35 years with respect to demographics (age, gender, ethnicity, BMI, experience with mindfulness, meditation, or contemplative prayer); self-reported trait mindfulness, weight and shape concerns, and difficulties in emotion regulation; and self-reported state body dissatisfaction (weight dissatisfaction, shape dissatisfaction, appearance dissatisfaction) and negative affect at 3 timepoints (baseline, post-media exposure, and final [after engaging in a strategy focused on decentering, non-judgement, or rest]). It also includes qualitative data files that specify participants' self-reported thoughts and behaviour during the strategy, how participants responded to any negative thoughts and feelings, how participants might use the strategy in everyday life, and any further comments about taking part in the study. One qualitative file contains the raw data only, and the other includes our codes and rationale for rating each participant with respect to their degree of adherence to the strategy instructions.This dataset was created through online data collection using Qualtrics. Demographics and trait/state variables were assessed using validated self-report measures and visual analogue scales.Microsoft Word and SPSS Statistics software is required to view the data

    Mindfulness Training to Facilitate Positive Body Image and Embodiment

    Mindfulness – the non-judgemental awareness and acceptance of present moment experience – is cultivated through formal and informal experiential exercises, and has received support as an effective intervention approach across multiple disorders. The efficacy of mindfulness for body image and disordered eating is less well researched. This chapter outlines a theoretical framework for the application of mindfulness in this context, provides examples of intervention content, and reviews existing evidence related to the use of mindfulness training to enhance body image and prevent eating disorders in both clinical and non-clinical samples. Overall, research indicates mindfulness is a worthwhile approach, but should be carefully considered among those with clinical eating disorders due to the potential for negative impacts. Further research using rigorous methodology is required to establish stronger and broader support for intervention effects, and to explore mindfulness with regard to additional aspects of positive body image, embodiment and intuitive eating

    The well-being of carers of older Aboriginal people living in the Kimberley region of remote Western Australia: Empowerment, depression, and carer burden

    Objective: To describe demographic features and well-being of carers of Aboriginal Australians aged ≥45 years in remote Western Australia. Method: Carer burden, empowerment, and depression were assessed in 124 Aboriginal carers in four remote Aboriginal communities. Results: Carers were aged 38.8 ± 15.0 years, 73.4% were female, and 75.8% were children or grandchildren of the person cared for. The mean Zarit-6 score was 3.7 ± 3.6. Attending high school (odds ratio [OR] = 0.3; 95% confidence interval [CI] = [0.1, 0.7]) and feeling empowered (OR = 0.2; 95% CI = [0.1, 0.8]) were inversely associated with carer burden; female carers were less likely to feel empowered (OR = 0.4; 95% CI = [0.2, 0.9]); and empowerment was inversely associated with depression (OR = 0.3; 95% CI = [0.1, 0.7]). Discussion: Aboriginal carers in remote communities are relatively young and most are children or grandchildren. Carer burden was lower than anticipated. However, existing tools may not adequately measure Aboriginal perspectives. Education and empowerment are key factors which support programs must consider
