Environmental controls of the northern distribution limit of yellow birch in eastern Canada
To evaluate environmental controls of yellow birch (Betula alleghaniensis Britton) distribution at its northern distribution limit in eastern Canada, we analyzed abundance, age structure, biomass accumulation rate, and growth sensitivity to climate of this species at 14 sites along a 200 km latitudinal gradient spanning three bioclimatic domains and reaching frontier populations of this species in western Quebec. We observed a large variability in seedling density across domains and presence of sites with abundant yellow birch regeneration within all three bioclimatic domains. Seedling density was positively correlated to mean age and abundance of yellow birch trees in the canopy, while sapling density was positively associated with dryer habitats. Growth patterns of canopy trees showed no effect of declining temperatures along the south-north gradient. Environmental controls of birch distribution at its northern limit were realized through factors affecting birch regeneration and not growth of canopy trees. At the stand scale, regeneration density was strongly controlled by local site conditions and not by differences in climate among sites. At the regional scale, climate variability could be an indirect driver of yellow birch distribution, affecting disturbance rates and, subsequently, availability of suitable sites for regeneration

The association between play and pleasure may seem natural, even intuitive. Although the hedonism associated with playful activities is generally evident in normally developing children, for children who have experienced early relational trauma (Bonneville-Baruchel, 2015), play can be related to displeasure, suffering and great psychological distress (Romano, 2010). Play, then, does not seem to obey the pleasure principle, nor for that matter the reality principle, in the same way that it is neither entirely in the realm of either reality or fantasy (Winnicott, 1975). This theoretical and clinical paper focuses on the evolution of the nature and role of pleasure in the psychotherapy of children who have experienced early relational trauma and who are able to experience pleasure. It attempts to demonstrate that for these children, pleasure is initially related to sensoriality, but that access to psychotherapy and pretend play allows a transition from a form of pleasure associated with the senses to one which is linked to meaning. The characteristics of play in traumatized children are outlined and clinical vignettes are presented to illustrate different manifestations of pleasure in children with early relational trauma
Drawings constitute a graphic expression of the child’s mental representation
capacity. Through their drawings, children express their fears, anxieties and
satisfactions in a symbolic way. They are particularly useful when the child does
not use speech to communicate with the clinician. Drawings establish a language
between the object (content of the drawing), the subject (child) and the observer
(psychologist), while providing a visual support through which the child can show
his fantasy world. The latter thus becomes real and tangible, without representing
the concrete reality of the child. This article aims to show how drawings can be
used in the context of children’s psychological assessment and psychotherapy. The
drawings of a child with some psychotic vulnerabilities are presented and discussed
in the light of some historical and contextual elements as well as his intrapsychic
conflicts, anxieties and psychological resources. The authors also illustrate the
therapeutic work concerning the child’s primitive anxieties of fragmentation,
annihilation, and persecution uncovered in the child’s transference. Theoretical and
clinical considerations regarding psychotherapy with children with psychotic
personality organization are discussed
Currently, ecosystems face a great loss of biodiversity due to human disturbances, which has negative effects on ecological processes. To know the state of conservation of an environment, indicator species can be identified, which play an important role in different ecological processes and are sensitive to disturbances. The objective of this study was to determine the diversity of birds in response to different habitat disturbances in the ejido Laguna Om, Quintana Roo, Mexico, by means of counting by points from August to September 2017. We selected sites with different conservation status: Tropical Forest, Lagoon, Road, Pasture, and Invasive Fern habitat. In total 103 species of birds were recorded. We found a greater richness of species in Lagoon and the Road. The abundance patterns of species tolerant to disturbance was greater in disturbed areas. We found greater similarity in the trophic guilds composition shared between the Lagoon and the Tropical Forest, and in those shared between the Invasive Fern habitat and the Road, while the composition in the Pasture did not show similarities with respect to the other habitats. Bird species diversity and composition depend on the structural complexity at the habitat level, rather than the type of disturbance that is associated locally
