The blunted effect of glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide in subcutaneous abdominal adipose tissue in obese subjects is partly reversed by weight loss
BACKGROUND: Glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) appears to have impaired effect on subcutaneous abdominal adipose tissue metabolism in obese subjects. The aim of the present study was to examine whether weight loss may reverse the impaired effect of GIP on subcutaneous abdominal adipose tissue in obese subjects. METHODS: Five obese males participated in a 12-week weight loss program, which consisted of caloric restriction (800 Cal day(−)(1)) followed by 4 weeks of weight-maintenance diet. Before and after weight loss, subcutaneous adipose tissue lipid metabolism was studied by conducting regional measurements of arterio-venous plasma concentrations of metabolites and blood flow (adipose tissue blood flow, ATBF) across a segment of the abdominal adipose tissue in the fasting state and during GIP infusion (1.5 pmol kg(−)(1 )min(−)(1)) in combination with a hyperinsulinemic–hyperglycemic clamp. RESULTS: After weight loss (7.5±0.8 kg), glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity increased significantly as expected. No significant differences were seen in basal ATBF before (1.3±0.4 ml min(−1) 100 g tissue(−1)) and after weight loss (2.1±0.4 ml min(−1) 100 g tissue)(−1); however, a tendency to increase was seen. After weight loss, GIP infusion increased ATBF significantly (3.2±0.1 ml min(−1) 100 g tissue(−1)) whereas there was no increase before weight loss. Triacylglycerol (TAG) uptake did not change after weight loss. Baseline free fatty acid (FFA) and glycerol output increased significantly after weight loss, P<0.001. During the clamp period, FFA and glycerol output declined significantly, P<0.05, with no differences before and after weight loss. Weight loss increased glucose uptake and decreased FFA/glycerol ratio during the clamp period, P<0.05. CONCLUSIONS: In obese subjects, weight loss, induced by calorie restriction, improves the blunted effect of GIP on subcutaneous abdominal adipose tissue metabolism

This research aimed to describe student attitude of flavoring and synthetic dyes in food processing. Including cognitive, affective, and conative indicators. The The population in this research is the attitude of family welfare major of technic department of UNP 2008 untill 2010 who have been had food material science in the first class which are 163 persons. The sampling technic is propotionate random sampling with 48 samples. For synthetic flavor 49% respondents have the good attitude, 60,4% for cognitive indicator, 60,4% for affective and 65.1% for conative of the use of synthetic flavor in food processing. For synthetic dyes 60.4% respondents have the good attitude, 60.4% for cognitiveindivator, 67.4% for affective and 65.1% for conitive of the use of synthetic dyes. The result of score T analysis shows that the students have the negtive attitude of flavoring and synthetic dyes use. Negative means that the students not use the flavor and synthetic dyes in food processing

This study aimed to describe the nutritional knowledge, nutritional adequacy and analyzing their relationship with the knowledge of nutritional adequacy. This study is correlational with a population of 182 people and a sample of 28 people who is taken amid proportional random sampling technique. Data collection techniques for knowledge of nutrition using a questionnaire enclosed in the form of multiple choice, while for nutritional adequacy using open questionnaire form of food recall. The results showed that the nutrition knowledge of students included into the category is as high as (25%) and (17.8%) students have the knowledge of the high category. In the variable nutritional adequacy indicates that the highest energy intake of students (3999.4kcal) and the lowest intake of (421.2kcal). Correlation test results showed that the correlation is positive and significant correlation between knowledge with nutritional adequacy with thitung 6,961 students at the significance level of 0.000. Contributions knowledge of nutrition on the nutritional adequacy of students amounted to 24.1
Public libraries to promote public health and wellbeing: A cross-sectional study of community-dwelling adults
Purpose of research: To explore the potential of libraries as community hubs to promote mental and physical health and wellbeing. Design: Cross-sectional online survey and interview-based study with community-dwelling adults and library staff. Methods: We analysed data from 605 respondents using a 14-item electronic survey and conducted interviews with 12 library users and staff to gauge perceptions. Descriptive statistics and thematic analysis were used to identify key trends and emergent themes. Results: Libraries remain popular and are considered a'safe place' by members of the community, irrespective of whether they are frequent users of services. Library users' lack of awareness of community-facing services could act as a hurdle to improving community health and wellbeing. Targeted engagement with residents is needed to increase awareness of libraries' services, including community interventions to help tackle loneliness and inequalities in digital and health literacy. Library staff often did not feel involved in important decision-making. Various barriers, drivers and practical recommendations were identied to leverage libraries as hubs to promote community health and wellbeing. Conclusion: Libraries already offer a variety of resources that either directly or indirectly support the health and wellbeing of community-dwelling adults and young people, but public awareness of these services is limited. As we navigate postpandemic recovery, libraries can serve as platforms for community engagement, fostering resilience, mental health support, and reducing social isolation. Recognising libraries' untapped potential can lead to healthier communities and improved wellbeing
Structure and in vitro digestibility of grass pea (Lathyrus sativus L.) flour following transglutaminase treatment
The impact of transglutaminase (TG) modification on microstructure and in vitro protein and starch digestibility of grass pea flour was investigated. Results demonstrated that grass pea flour proteins act as effective substrate of TG. Microstructural results showed that the addition of TG produced a more compact structure likely due to TG-catalyzed heteropolymers. Nutritional properties such as slowly digestible starch and expected glycemic index values followed the order: grass pea flour incubated in the absence of TG>grass pea flour incubated in the presence of TG>raw flour. The TG-catalyzed heteropolymers were easily digested as demonstrated by in vitro oral and gastric digestion carried out under physiological conditions. Therefore, TG-modified grass pea flour can be considered as a new source of starch and proteins suitable for feeding a large spectrum of population
On the Response of an OST to a Point-like Heat Source
A new technique of superconducting cavity diagnostics has been introduced by
D. Hartrill at Cornell University, Ithaca, USA. Oscillating Superleak
Transducers (OST) detect the heat transferred from a cavity's quench point via
"Second Sound" through the superfluid He bath, needed to cool the
superconducting cavity. The observed response of an OST is a complex, but
reproducible pattern of oscillations. A small helium evaporation cryostat was
built which allows the investigation of the response of an OST in greater
detail. The distance between a point-like electrical heater and the OST can be
varied. The OST can be mounted either parallel or perpendicular to the plate,
housing the heat source. If the artificial quench-point releases an amount of
energy compatible to a real quench spot on a cavity's surface, the OST signal
starts with a negative pulse, which is usually strong enough to allow automatic
detection. Furthermore, the reflection of the Second Sound on the wall is
observed. A reflection coefficient R = 0.39 +- 0.05 of the glass wall is
measured. This excludes a strong influence of multiple reflections in the
complex OST response. Fourier analyses show three main frequencies, found in
all OST spectra. They can be interpreted as modes of an oscillating circular

A unified definition of clinical anthracycline resistance breast cancer
The purpose of the study was to determine the response rates (RR) and duration to second- and third-line chemotherapy programmes in patients with anthracycline-resistant breast cancer, utilizing various definitions of anthracycline resistance. This was a retrospective analysis performed on 1335 patients with metastatic breast cancer who participated in consecutive clinical trials of first line, anthracycline-containing combination chemotherapy (ACCC) at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center between July 1973 and April 1980. Anthracycline-resistant groups were identified using definitions of anthracycline resistance found in the literature: progressive disease as best response to ACCC (Group 1, n = 56 patients); progressive disease while receiving ACCC after an intervening response to the drug (Group 2, n = 84); progressive disease within 6 months of last dose of ACCC (Group 3, n = 233); and progressive disease within 12 months of last dose of ACCC (Group 4, n = 272). Second- and third-line therapies administered to these patients included methotrexate, doxorubicin, mitoxantrone, bisantrene, vinblastine, vindesine, melphalan, mitomycin, cisplatin, etoposide and others, but not taxanes. The distribution of patients' characteristics was similar between the four groups, as was the use of second- and third-line regimens. Response rate (RR) to second-line chemotherapy were 5% and 7.7% for Group 1 and Group 2 respectively. In contrast, RR to second-line chemotherapy were 21.6% and 15% for Group 3 and 4. The differences in response rate between the combination of Groups 1 and 2 and Groups 3 or 4 were significant (P = 0.005 and P = 0.04 respectively). These results indicate that strictly defined anthracycline resistance as defined in Groups 1 and 2 is associated with resistance to many other cytotoxic drugs. The definitions used in Groups 3 and 4 include many patients with responsive tumours, and a more favourable prognosis. © 2000 Cancer Research Campaig
Geographical Analysis of Agro-Environmental Measures for Reduction of Chemical Inputs in Tuscany
The agro-environmental policies included in rural development plans are getting increasing importance in European Community strategies. These policies represent the meeting point between demand and supply of positive externalities. The difficulty of assessing real envi- ronmental efficiency is one of the elements characterizing agro-environmental measures. This difficulty is related to the identification of suitable parameters for evaluating farms according to their impact on the territory. This impact is mainly related both to chemical inputs and to the territorial characteristics of the farm. Different types of fertilizers, pesti- cides and herbicides are currently used in production processes; however, the analysis has focused only on nitrates, as they represent the most critical types of chemicals related to soil pollution. A case study is provided by analysis of agro-environmental measures in Tuscany for the reduction of nitrates in organic and integrated farms. Using spatial multicriteria analysis, integrated and organic farms were classified according to their geographical loca- tions and their release of nitrates into the soil. This classification permits the highlighting of farms that make the greatest economic efforts to reduce pollution and therefore it could determine environmental benefits. Considering that the trend of policy strategies is toward a reduction of monetary resources, the classification could help decision makers choose the right allocation of future resources
