    Emotional intelligence and British expatriates’ cross-cultural adjustment in international construction projects

Today’s internationalized business demands global mindset, intercultural sensitivity and the ability to skilfully negotiate through cross-cultural interactions. Therefore, the overall aim was to investigate the influence of emotional intelligence (EI) on cross-cultural adjustment (CCA) of British expatriates working on International Architectural, Engineering and Construction assignments in Sub-Saharan Africa, China, Middle East and Indian Sub-Continent. Specifically, the causal relationship between EI and three facets of CCA i.e. work, general and interaction adjustment was explored. A sequential exploratory mixed methods design was adopted. These include extensive review of existing literature, eighteen unstructured interviews, and questionnaire survey of 191 British expatriates operating in 29 different countries from the four regions under investigation. Structural equation modelling was used to assess the causal relationship between EI and CCA. Results show that EI accounted for 91, 64 and 24% of the variance in work, interaction and general adjustment respectively. Overall, the model was able to explain 60% variance in CCA, suggesting that EI competencies play a huge role in facilitating an expatriate understand and adapt to host country culture. The findings would help decision-makers (HR managers) during expatriate selection process, in understanding that along with technical skills, it is the emotional competencies that are crucial in assisting expatriates adjust to foreign way of life

    Factors Influencing the Implementation of Site Waste Management Plans on UK Projects of all sizes

    The purpose of this research is to identify and assess the opportunities and challenges of implementing a Site Waste Management Plan (SWMP) on projects irrespective of size. In the UK, construction and demolition waste accounts for a third of all UK waste. There are a number of factors that influence the implementation of SWMPs. In order to identify and analyse these factors, 4 unstructured interviews were carried out and a sample of 56 participants completed a questionnaire survey. The scope of the study was limited to UK construction industry professionals. The analysis revealed that more needs to be done if the industry is to meet government targets of reduction in construction related waste going to landfill. In addition, although SWMP may not yet be legally required on all construction projects, clients and contractors need to realise the benefits to cut costs and implement best practice by adopting a SWMP. The benefits of implementing a SWMP will not only help to achieve this but also gain significant cost savings on projects and is also extremely beneficial to the environment. This study presents evidence that contractors need to do more to reduce waste and draws a clear link between waste reduction and the implementation of SWMPs. The findings are useful in the ongoing efforts to encourage the industry to find smarter, more efficient and less damaging ways to operate

    The construction industry in Northern Ireland is one of the major contributors of construction waste to landfill each year. The aim of this research paper is to identify the core on-site management causes of material waste on construction sites in Northern Ireland and to illustrate various methods of prevention which can be adopted. The research begins with a detailed literature review and is complemented with the conduction of semi-structured interviews with 6 professionals who are experienced and active within the Northern Ireland construction industry. Following on from the literature review and interviews analysis, a questionnaire survey is developed to obtain further information in relation to the subject area. The questionnaire is based on the key findings of the previous stages to direct the research towards the most influential factors. The analysis of the survey responses reveals that the core causes of waste generation include a rushed program, poor handling and onsite damage of materials, while the principal methods of prevention emerge as the adequate storage, the reuse of material on-site and efficient material ordering. Furthermore, the role of the professional background in the shaping of perceptions relevant to waste management is also investigated and significant differences are identified. The findings of this research are beneficial for the industry as they enhance the understanding of construction waste generation causes and highlight the practices required to reduce waste on-site in the context of sustainable development

    Toward Urban Data Governance: Status-Quo, Challenges, and Success Factors

    The benefits of urban data cannot be realized without a political and strategic view of data use. A core concept within this view is data governance, which aligns strategy in data-relevant structures and entities with data processes, actors, architectures, and overall data management. Data governance is not a new concept and has long been addressed by scientists and practitioners from an enterprise perspective. In the urban context, however, data governance has only recently attracted increased attention, despite the unprecedented relevance of data in the advent of smart cities. Urban data governance can create semantic compatibility between heterogeneous technologies and data silos and connect stakeholders by standardizing data models, processes, and policies. This research provides a foundation for developing a reference model for urban data governance, identifies challenges in dealing with data in cities, and defines factors for the successful implementation of urban data governance. To obtain the best possible insights, the study carries out qualitative research following the design science research paradigm, conducting semi-structured expert interviews with 27 municipalities from Austria, Germany, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, and the Netherlands. The subsequent data analysis based on cognitive maps provides valuable insights into urban data governance. The interview transcripts were transferred and synthesized into comprehensive urban data governance maps to analyze entities and complex relationships with respect to the current state, challenges, and success factors of urban data governance. The findings show that each municipal department defines data governance separately, with no uniform approach. Given cultural factors, siloed data architectures have emerged in cities, leading to interoperability and integrability issues. A city-wide data governance entity in a cross-cutting function can be instrumental in breaking down silos in cities and creating a unified view of the city’s data landscape. The further identified concepts and their mutual interaction offer a powerful tool for developing a reference model for urban data governance and for the strategic orientation of cities on their way to data-driven organizations
