Date Fruit Extract Is a Neuroprotective Agent in Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy in Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetic Rats: A Multimodal Analysis
Background. To study the effects of an aqueous extract of date fruit (Phoenix dactylifera L. Arecaceae) diet on diabetic polyneuropathy (DPN) in streptozotocin- (STZ-) induced diabetic rats.
Methods. The effects of a date fruit extract (DFE) diet on diabetic neuropathy in STZ-induced diabetic rats were evaluated and compared with a nondiabetic control group, diabetic control group (sham), and vehicle group with respect to the following parameters: open field behavioral test, motor nerve conduction velocity (MNCV), and morphological observations.
Results. In the model of STZ-induced of diabetic neuropathy, chronic treatment for 6 weeks with DFE counteracted the impairment of the explorative activity of the rats in an open field behavioral test and of the conduction velocity of the sciatic nerve (MNCV). In addition, pretreatment with DFE significantly reversed each nerve diameter reduction in diabetic rats.
Conclusion. DFE treatment shows efficacy for preventing diabetic deterioration and for improving pathological parameters of diabetic neuropathy in rats, as compared with control groups

Gender difference in motor impairments induced by chronic administration of vinblastine
Objective(s): Neurotoxicity of anticancer drugs complicates treatment of cancer patients. Vinblastine (VBL) is reported to induce motor and cognitive impairments in patients receiving chronic low-dose regimen. Materials and Methods: The effects of VBL treatment on motor, learning and memory functions of male and female Wistar rats were studied by behavioral related tests. Animals were given chronic intraperitoneal injections of VBL (0.2 mg/kg/week for 5 weeks) from postnatal day 23 to 52. Motor function was evaluated using grasping test and balancing was evaluated by the rotarod. Spatial learning and memory and anxiety-like behavior were determined using Morris water maze (MWM) task and open field test, respectively. Results: Administration of VBL caused severe damage to motor and balance function of male rats in comparison to female rats treated with VBL and rats treated with saline. Memory and locomotion were affected in both male and female rats compared with saline treated rats, while a sex difference was also observed in these parameters; male rats showed more impairment compared with female ones. Both male and female rats showed cognitive impairments in MWM task and no sex differences were observed in these functions. Conclusion: Results revealed that VBL is a potent neurotoxic agent and despite the profound effect of VBL on motor and cognitive functions, it seems that male rats are more susceptible to motor deficits induced by VBL
Immunohistochemistry Study on Androgen and Estrogen Receptors of Rat Seminal Vesicle Submitted to Simultaneous Alcohol-Nicotine Treatment
Objective: Alcohol consumption is habitually accompanied by the use of other psychoactive
substances, mostly tobacco. Nicotine and alcohol affect male accessory reproductive
glands function. Most studies have been done on pathologic features of prostate, but there
has been no systematic study on the seminal vesicle. Therefore, the aim of current study
was to investigate the distribution of androgen receptor (AR) and estrogen receptors-beta
(ER-β) immune reactivities following long-term treatment of alcohol, nicotine or a combination
of both substances.
Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, a total of 40 adult Wistar rats, nine
weeks of age, were used. Animals were randomly divided into four groups, including: i.
Control group receiving normal saline 0.09%, ii. Ethanol group receiving ethanol 20% (2
ml/kg, via gavage), iii. Nicotine group receiving nicotine (0.1 mg/kg, subcutaneous injection),
and iv. Ethanol-nicotine group receiving simultaneous ethanol 20% (2 ml/kg) and
nicotine (0.1 mg/kg) treatment. All treatment lasted for eight weeks. Prior to intracardiac
perfusion, blood sample was collected from left ventricle. The seminal vesicles were isolated
and processed for paraffin blocking. The sample tissues were then studied for distribution
of AR and ER-β immunereactivities using immunohistochemical (IHC) staining
method. One way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey’s test were performed for data
analysis. A value of P<0.05 was considered significant.
Results: Our results revealed that the lowest mean number of positive cells belonged
to the animals of ethanol-nicotine group that was followed by the ethanol, nicotine, and
control groups, respectively. However, there was no significant difference regarding serum
testosterone level among experimental groups.
Conclusion: It was concluded that combination of both ethanol and nicotine may be a
crucial factor in the expression levels of AR and ER-β
Estrogen and Progesterone Replacement Therapy Prevent Methamphetamine-Induced Synaptic Plasticity Impairment in Ovariectomized Rats
Background: Methamphetamine (METH) is one of the most popular psychostimulants which produce long lasting learning and memory impairment. Previous studies have indicated that estrogen and progesterone replacement therapy attenuate cognitive impairment against a wide array of neurodegenerative diseases. Present study was designed to figure out the effects of estrogen, progesterone alone or in combination, on early long-term potentiation (E-LTP) at the cornu ammonis (CA1) area of the hippocampus in METH-exposed ovariectomized (OVX) rat.Methods: Twenty-one days after ovariectomy, the OVX rats received vehicle, estrogen [1 mg/kg, intraperitoneal (IP)] or progesterone (8 mg/kg, IP) and co-administration of estrogen plus progesterone during 14 consecutive days. On the 28th day, animals were exposed to neurotoxic METH regimens [four injections 6 mg/kg, subcutaneous (SC), 2 h intervals] 30 min after the hormones replacement. Finally, we investigated the effect of those ovarian hormones on synaptic plasticity using in vivo extracellular recording in the CA1 area of the hippocampus 2 days after last treatment.Findings: The findings showed that the induction and maintenance phase of E-LTP was impaired in the METH exposed animals compared to the saline group. Data from this study demonstrated that treatment with estrogen and progesterone showed a significant facilitation for induction and enhancement of the maintenance of LTP in animals that received METH. In addition, co-administration of estrogen plus progesterone did not significantly affect the hippocampal synaptic plasticity in METH-exposed OVX rats in comparison with METH-exposed animals that received vehicle injections.Conclusion: The present findings provide new insight about treatment with ovarian hormones on synaptic plasticity deficits induced by METH
Hydrogel nanocomposite based on alginate/zeolite for burn wound healing: In vitro and in vivo study
Objective(s): The main objective of the current assay was to evaluate the antibacterial and regenerative effects of hydrogel nanocomposite containing pure natural zeolite (clinoptilolite) integrated with alginate (Alg) as wound healing/dressing biomaterials.Materials and Methods: The zeolites were size excluded, characterized by SEM, DLS, XRD, FTIR, and XRF, and then integrated into Alg hydrogel followed by calcium chloride crosslinking. The Alg and alginate zeolite (Alg/Zeo) hydrogel was characterized by swelling and weight loss tests, also the antibacterial, hemocompatibility, and cell viability tests were performed. In animal studies, the burn wound was induced on the back of rats and treated with the following groups: control, Alg hydrogel, and Alg/Zeo hydrogel.Results: The results showed that the hydrodynamic diameter of zeolites was 367 ± 0.2 nm. Zeolites did not show any significant antibacterial effect, however, the hydrogel nanocomposite containing zeolite had proper swelling as well as hemocompatibility and no cytotoxicity was observed. Following the creation of a third-degree burn wound on the back of rats, the results indicated that the Alg hydrogel and Alg/Zeo nanocomposite accelerated the wound healing process compared with the control group. Re-epithelialization, granulation tissue thickness, collagenization, inflammatory cell recruitment, and angiogenesis level were not significantly different between Alg and Alg/Zeo nanocomposite.Conclusion: These findings revealed that although the incorporation of zeolites did not induce a significant beneficial effect in comparison with Alg hydrogel, using zeolite capacity in hydrogel for loading the antibiotics or other effective compounds can be considered a promising wound dressing
The Frequency of Job Burnout among Dentists of Kerman City
Background: Dentistry is a demanding profession with high physical and mental tiredness, which can result in job burnout. The aim of this study was to find the frequency of job burnout in dentists of Kerman
Methods: This cross- sectional study was carried out on 145 dentists working in private offices and health care centers of Kerman. Data were collected using Maslach job burnout questionnaire and analyzed through SPSS18 software and using regression analysis.
Results: Among these dentists, 51.7% were male and 48.3% were female. Mean age of participants was 35 ± 7.18 years. In whole, 14.1% had a high level of depersonalization, 30.46% showed high emotional exhaustion, and 71.76% reported high personal accomplishment failure. Demographic variables such as age, sex, occupational status and year of graduation showed no significant relationship with job burnout. But, depersonalization showed a significant relationship with occupational status and marital status.
Conclusion: There is a high frequency of job burnout among Kerman dentists. Intervention policies for evaluation and to find the related factors and preventive measures are recommended.
