This article attempts to define the evolution and adaptation of a geographical myth in Assam, where the Tantric Hindu goddess KÄmÄkhyÄ has been a significant icon for centuries. From the 10th century onwards, symbolic literary writings from the region emphasizes specific points of reference. Associated with the advent of the Hindu kingdoms, the goddess also divided the land into regions and instituted her own sacred territories, beginning with her hill, located at the entrance of the Assamese capital. Widely venerated throughout the Brahmaputra valley, in areas surrounding the great temple or further afield in less accessible areas, KÄmÄkhyÄ had a somewhat itinerant nature as well. Today, six other temples are dedicated to her. Calling upon numerous documents collected in the field (Assamese historical chronicles and contemporary legal proceedings), we walk in KÄmÄkhyÄâs footsteps, making the most of each stop on our path. Our goal is to gain access to the territories engendered by the goddess engendered in order to gain a glimpse into the relationship uniting all of the interconnected population groups in Assam
For the last twenty years, online dating has changed the way we choose our partners in the West. Love at first sight, far from being a rational behaviour, has given way to the possibility of finding love from a catalogue by multiplying possible candidates. In India, these new meeting methods succeed a long-established model where marriages are arranged by an intermediary. The new freedom offered by such modern practices enabling men and women to meet outside the supervision of families is gaining legitimacy as the websites themselves assume the traditional intermediary role. The public authorities confirm this role by periodically reminding the website administrators of their moral duty
Over the past few decades, the Brahmaputra River has become an essential aesthetic element within the urban landscape of Guwahati, the capital of Assam. But earlier, it was the scene of numerous confrontations, like with the Mughals in the 17th century, before going on to form the East India Companyâs favourite access route for exporting the regionâs wealth to Calcutta. The reading of a text in Sanskrit helps to trace this evolution and understand the impact of the river, described through the categories of the human body. While trying to legitimize its floods and rapid current, the authors of myths also tried to control its access. Nevertheless, religious literature of the past shows how the river structured the city. It appears from these perspectives that the Brahmaputra has been both adored and controlled
Using Verbal Art to Deal with Conflicts: Womenâs Voices on Family and Kinship in KÄmÄkhyÄ (Assam)
Analyzing two women’s rituals in which verbal art on family and kinship is prominent, this article explores situations in which tales and songs in Assamese are staged by newly married and about-to-be-married young women. Active participation in stories and song sessions, under the guidance of older storytellers or singers, imparts practical knowledge to young women about the possible ways by which to retaliate against male domination and domestic tensions with one’s mother-in-law. The young women who participate are not merely engaged in the performance but are also encouraged to place themselves in the story. This performance study, based on the ecology of Assam and the annual calendar of festivals at the great temple of the goddess KÄmÄkhyÄ, combines the exploration of these narratives with the observation of rituals. It also seeks to question whether social language practices endow women with the power to affirm themselves and with the knowledge, through ritual performance, to deal with conflict. Finally, it shows how the use of an original ritual object—a small house—can be put into perspective with the concept of “house” as understood in particular by Lévi-Strauss
