    Conceptualizing a Cognitive Analytics Capability

    Get PDF
Gaining value from new, emerging technologies is a major concern for information systems researchers and practitioners. Prior research is unanimous in its argument that organizations need to develop capabilities around such novel technologies in order to leverage them effectively. In this short paper, we focus on the cognitive analytics technology. While it has attracted significant hype, the returns on investment in this technology have not been very impressive. This paper uses the resource-based view as a theoretical lens, interviews with domain experts, and a review of the academic literature on cognitive analytics to conceptualize a cognitive analytics capability. We identify the tangible, human, and intangible resources that underpin an organization\u27s cognitive analytics capability. This research can potentially contribute to the academic literature on business value of information technology. It can also help organizations extract maximum benefits from their investments in cognitive analytics technology. Future avenues of research are also discussed

Quantitative genetics of sexual dimorphism in human body size

Journal ArticleA classical data set is used to predict the effect of selection on sexual dimorphism and on the population means of three characters--stature, span, and cubit--in humans. Given selection of equal intensity, the population means of stature and of cubit should respond more than 60 times as fast as dimorphism in these characters. The population mean of span should also respond far more rapidly than dimorphism, but no numerical estimate of the ratio of these rates was possible. These results imply that sexual dimorphism in these characters can evolve only very slowly. Consequently, hypotheses about the causes of sexual dimorphism cannot be tested by comparing the dimorphism of different human societies. It has been suggested that primate sexual dimorphism may be an allometric response to selection for larger body size. We show that such selection can indeed generate sexual dimorphism, but that this effect is too weak to account for the observed relationship between dimorphism and body size in primates

Information Technology Capability and Firm Performance: The Role of Strategic Orientation

    Get PDF
A key strand of IT business value research is concerned with the measurement of IT capability of firms and the impact of IT capability on the accounting-based measures of firm performance. Previous empirical studies examining this relationship in the context of developed economies have reported mixed results, and there is a dearth of studies in the context of emerging economies. In this study, we seek to employ archival data from the emerging economy context of India, and replicate the findings from the earlier studies, in order to examine the existing theory. We also propose to extend the existing theory by incorporating the role of strategic orientation (indicated by the Miles and Snow strategy types) of the firms while examining the impact of IT capability on firm performance. Thus, the results of this study offer possibilities of both theoretical and practical implications

Diffusion tensor imaging in assessment of demyelinating diseases of central nervous system

Background: Conventional MR plays an important role in detection of demyelinating lesions. Involvement of the lesion core, perilesional region and normally appearing white matter (NAWM) cannot be quantified using routine T2/FLAIR sequences. DTI is an important tool in assessment of anisotropy in affected and apparently normal region of brain. 3D Tractography maps are useful in showing white matter fibre loss. Aim was the assessment of white matter damage and neuroaxonal loss using DTI in demyelinating lesionsMethods: Cross sectional observational study including clinically suspected 30 patients of demyelinating disease. Patients were studied in 3Tesla Siemens Skyra MRI scanner with phased array coils. T1w, T2w, FLAIR, DWI, DTI, post contrast T1w images were included and FA, ADC, Tractography maps were generated. ANOVA test and BONFERONI analysis were used. Results: We found mean FA of core lesion was 0.307±0.06, of perilesional region 0.444±0.03 and NAWM 0.567±0.06. The mean ADC value of core of the lesion was 1.24×10-3mm2/sec±0.11×10-3mm2/sec, perilesional region 1.16×10-6mm2/sec ±0.1×10-3mm2/sec and NAWM 1.04×10-3mm2/sec±0.06×10-3mm2/sec.Conclusions: DTI is a useful MR technique that allows quantification of extent of demyelination in the white matter measuring FA and ADC values. The FA values which denote diffusivity and directionality are more reliable marker of demyelination compared to ADC values. DTI Tractography shows white matter tract disruption which may play role in assessing clinical outcome of patients

Understanding the Impact of Early Citers on Long-Term Scientific Impact

This paper explores an interesting new dimension to the challenging problem of predicting long-term scientific impact (LTSI) usually measured by the number of citations accumulated by a paper in the long-term. It is well known that early citations (within 1-2 years after publication) acquired by a paper positively affects its LTSI. However, there is no work that investigates if the set of authors who bring in these early citations to a paper also affect its LTSI. In this paper, we demonstrate for the first time, the impact of these authors whom we call early citers (EC) on the LTSI of a paper. Note that this study of the complex dynamics of EC introduces a brand new paradigm in citation behavior analysis. Using a massive computer science bibliographic dataset we identify two distinct categories of EC - we call those authors who have high overall publication/citation count in the dataset as influential and the rest of the authors as non-influential. We investigate three characteristic properties of EC and present an extensive analysis of how each category correlates with LTSI in terms of these properties. In contrast to popular perception, we find that influential EC negatively affects LTSI possibly owing to attention stealing. To motivate this, we present several representative examples from the dataset. A closer inspection of the collaboration network reveals that this stealing effect is more profound if an EC is nearer to the authors of the paper being investigated. As an intuitive use case, we show that incorporating EC properties in the state-of-the-art supervised citation prediction models leads to high performance margins. At the closing, we present an online portal to visualize EC statistics along with the prediction results for a given query paper

Spontaneous subdural hematoma in a multigravida with chronic kidney disease and superadded pre-eclampsia detected by MRI: a case report

    Get PDF
Chronic kidney disease and pre-eclampsia are both known individual culprits for significant morbidity and mortality of mother and child worldwide. Non traumatic spontaneous subdural hematoma in pregnancy is a rare scenario, however stage 5 chronic kidney disease with superadded pre-eclampsia can be contributory factor for spontaneous extra axial bleed. Our patient was 25-year-old with history of end stage renal disease and chronic hypertension admitted with superadded pre-eclampsia. She had 1 living issue and 2 stillbirths. There was sudden deterioration of mental status as well as motor performance, the patient turned stupurous and was not following verbal commands. Patient was sent for MRI evaluation of brain and diagnosed as right sided subdural hematoma with significant midline shift towards the contralateral side. No intraparenchymal haemorrhage was noted

The business value of social media: A dynamic managerial capabilities perspective

    Get PDF
In the last decade and a half, social media usage has become ubiquitous in the workplace. Prior research has noted both the benefits as well as the potential pitfalls of allowing employees to use social media during work hours. In this research-in-progress paper, we propose a conceptual model that shows how the use of social media may help in the enablement of dynamic managerial capabilities by enhancing the managerial social capital. Thus, this paper adds to the literature on the business value of social media. This paper also shows how two distinct types of social media (i.e., public social media and enterprise social media) play complementary roles in the enhancement of managerial social capital, and consequently, in the enablement of dynamic managerial capabilities. Managerial implications are also discussed
