    Capacity Building and Challenges of Compliance with Global Best Practices in Labour-Management Relations in Bayelsa State

    A very important reason(s) for building the capacity of workers in any organization either in public or private sector is to enable them acquire knowledge, skills and technical know-how needed to improve upon their performances. In Bayelsa State South South Nigeria, issues of workers capacity building are very eminent and the question that comes to mind is; are workers expose to different forms of training to equip them with practices on global trends in labour management relations?  This study examined the challenges of building workers capacity in the civil service and recommended the institutionalization of regular training and re-training of workers for effective service delivery. This is an important step to boost workers morale for increase productivity and to update their competencies required to translate government policies and programmes into action for industrial peace and harmony in the State.     Repositioning Conceptual Understanding of Adult Education for Social Transformation in Nigeria

    The conceptual understanding of Adult Education and its mission has continued to suffer much neglect in various quarters in the education sector. The debate on the status of the discipline has been accorded low esteem and relegated to the background in government circles, in the intellectual community and public perception despite the huge potentials it offers in the developmental process. This paper is an attempt at repositioning the understanding of Adult Education to restore the image of poor perception from policy makers and implementers of adult education programmes in Nigeria. The paper examined the utilitarian value of adult education needed for the transformation of the plethora of problems in the economic, social and political landscape of society. It recommended that there is need to redesign adult education curriculum to sustain its nomenclature for lifelong learning to bring about the needed recognition as a career discipline in the education system for maximum benefit in Nigeria.     Influence of adult and non-formal education programmes on the attainment of the sustainable development goal four in Bayelsa State, Nigeria

    This study examined the extent to which adult and non-formal education programmes could facilitate the attainment of the sustainable development goal four (Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote life-long learning opportunities for all) in Bayelsa State. The descriptive survey research design was used. A sample of two hundred and thirty two comprising adult learners, facilitators and staff of the agency for adult and non-formal education in Yenegoa Local Government was randomly selected for the study. A structured instrument; “Questionnaire for Adult Education and Sustainable Development Goal Four (QAESDGF)” designed in 4 point Likert format was used for the study. It was face validated by experts in the Niger Delta University. A reliability coefficient of 0.78 of the instrument was obtained using the test-retest method. The mean and standard deviation were used in the analysis. A criterion mean of 2.50 was used as basis for accepting or rejecting the results. The result showed that adult and non-formal education programmes can promote literacy and numeracy skills, technical and vocational skills as well as provide inclusive education for the disabled to meet the targets of goal four of the sustainable development goals. However, it was found that Adult and non-formal education programmes have not been effective in the promotion of girl-child education in Bayelsa state. It was therefore recommended that the Agency for Adult and Non-formal Education in Bayelsa State should intensify efforts with regards to mounting up programmes that are focused on providing literacy and numeracy as well as technical and vocational skills. And such programmes should be made inclusive such that it caters for the girl-child as well as the physically challenged and disabled persons in Bayelsa State.Keywords: Adult Education, Programmes, Sustainable Development, Goals, Life-long, Attainmen

    Influence of women education on maternal health of nursing mothers in Yenagoa Local Government Area, Bayelsa State

    This study examined the influence of women education on maternal health care among mothers in Yenagoa Local Government Area, Bayelsa State. The descriptive survey design was adopted. 356 respondents were drawn from among 1782 population of registered nursing mothers across selected health institutions in Yenegoa Local Government Area to constitute the sample for the study. Instrument for data collection was a researcher-made questionnaire titled “Women Education and Maternal Health Care Questionnaire (WEMHCQ)”. The instrument was validated by two Senior Lecturers from Faculty of Education and Nursing of the Niger Delta University with reliability of 0.80 index. Data were analyzed using statistical mean. 2.50 was used as a basis for decision making. Results indicate that women education assist mothers to participate in antenatal care services, observe medication during the period of pregnancy, patronize qualified medical personnel, make use of exercises and also assist mothers to observe good diet during the period of their maternity. Based on the findings, it recommended that more awareness should be created about the need for women education as a means of promoting maternal health behaviour among mothers and the curriculum on women education should be reviewed to incorporate relevant aspects of maternal healthcare for effective service delivery.Keywords: Women Education, Maternal Health, Exercise, Diet, Drugs, Nursing Mother
