A Comment on "Brans-Dicke Cosmology with a scalar field potential"
We show that a recent letter claiming to present exact cosmological solutions
in Brans-Dicke theory actually uses a flawed set of equations as the starting
point for their analysis. The results presented in the letter are therefore not
valid.Comment: 2 pages, no figures. To appear in Europhysics Letter
Testing collinear factorization and nuclear parton distributions with pA collisions at the LHC
Global perturbative QCD analyses, based on large data sets from
electron-proton and hadron collider experiments, provide tight constraints on
the parton distribution function (PDF) in the proton. The extension of these
analyses to nuclear parton distributions (nPDF) has attracted much interest in
recent years. nPDFs are needed as benchmarks for the characterization of hot
QCD matter in nucleus-nucleus collisions, and attract further interest since
they may show novel signatures of non- linear density-dependent QCD evolution.
However, it is not known from first principles whether the factorization of
long-range phenomena into process-independent parton distribution, which
underlies global PDF extractions for the proton, extends to nuclear effects. As
a consequence, assessing the reliability of nPDFs for benchmark calculations
goes beyond testing the numerical accuracy of their extraction and requires
phenomenological tests of the factorization assumption. Here we argue that a
proton-nucleus collision program at the LHC would provide a set of measurements
allowing for unprecedented tests of the factorization assumption underlying
global nPDF fits.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Batch v. Town of Chapel Hill - Takings Law and Exactions: Where Should North Carolina Stand?
This note argues that the North Carolina Supreme Court improperly decided Batch v. Town of Chapel Hill by ruling on a mere technicality. Instead the court should have focused on the nature of the town\u27s ordinance and the required exaction and should have addressed Dr. Batch\u27s takings claim. Proper analysis of Dr. Batch\u27s claim indicates that the condition the Town of Chapel Hill imposed was an unconstitutional exaction. Part I of this note sets out the factual background and issues raised by the Batch decision and details the reasoning of both the North Carolina Court of Appeals and the North Carolina Supreme Court in ruling on the issues. Part II analyzes the courts\u27 holdings on the takings claim issue and concludes that a taking did occur
Robust ab initio calculation of condensed matter: transparent convergence through semicardinal multiresolution analysis
We present the first wavelet-based all-electron density-functional
calculations to include gradient corrections and the first in a solid. Direct
comparison shows this approach to be unique in providing systematic
``transparent'' convergence, convergence with a priori prediction of errors, to
beyond chemical (millihartree) accuracy. The method is ideal for exploration of
materials under novel conditions where there is little experience with how
traditional methods perform and for the development and use of chemically
accurate density functionals, which demand reliable access to such precision.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, 4 tables. Submitted to Phys. Rev. Lett. (updated

A non local unitary vector model in 3-D
We present a unified analysis of single excitation vector models in 3D. We
show that there is a family of first order master actions related by duality
transformations which interpolate between the different models. We use a
Hamiltonian (2+1) analysis to show the equivalence of the self-dual and
topologically massive models with a covariant non local model which propagates
also a single massive excitation. It is shown how the non local terms appears
naturally in the path integral framework.Comment: 13 pages, 1 figur
Magnetic structure and orbital ordering in BaCoO3 from first-principles calculations
Ab initio calculations using the APW+lo method as implemented in the WIEN2k
code have been used to describe the electronic structure of the
quasi-one-dimensional system BaCoO3. Both, GGA and LDA+U approximations were
employed to study different orbital and magnetic orderings. GGA predicts a
metallic ground state whereas LDA+U calculations yield an insulating and
ferromagnetic ground state (in a low-spin state) with an alternating orbital
ordering along the Co-Co chains, consistent with the available experimental
data.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figure
Calculations of giant magnetoresistance in Fe/Cr trilayers using layer potentials determined from {\it ab-initio} methods
The ab initio full-potential linearized augmented plane-wave method
explicitly designed for the slab geometry was employed to elucidate the
physical origin of the layer potentials for the trilayers nFe/3Cr/nFe(001),
where n is the number of Fe monolayers. The thickness of the transition-metal
ferromagnet has been ranged from up to n=8 while the spacer thickness was
fixed to 3 monolayers. The calculated potentials were inserted in the
Fuchs-Sondheimer formalism in order to calculate the giant magnetoresistance
(GMR) ratio. The predicted GMR ratio was compared with the experiment and the
oscillatory behavior of the GMR as a function of the ferromagnetic layer
thickness was discussed in the context of the layer potentials. The reported
results confirm that the interface monolayers play a dominant role in the
intrinsic GMR.Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables. accepted in J. Phys.: Cond. Matte
