Unemployment Benefit and Wages: The Impact of the Labor Market Reform in Germany on (Reservation) Wages

    Get PDF
In this paper, we contribute to the literature on the impact of the unemployment benefit on (reservation) wages. We use the German BA-Employment Panel (2008) to identify the effect of a reduced unemployment benefit due to the labor market reform of 2005 in Germany. Using this unique experiment, we find strong evidence that a lower unemployment benefit has an adverse effect on wages.Unemployment benefit, reservation wages, wages.

Employment Considerations for People who have Diabetes

This brochure on Diabetes and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is one of a series on human resources practices and workplace accommodations for persons with disabilities edited by Susanne M. Bruyère, Ph.D., CRC, SPHR, Director, Program on Employment and Disability, School of Industrial and Labor Relations – Extension Division, Cornell University. It was extenstively revised and updated in 2001 by Shereen Arent, National Director of Legal Advocacy, American Diabetes Association from the original, which was written in 1993 by Mary B. Dickson. It was reviewed for accuracy and timeliness in 2009 by Brian Dimick, Associate Director, Government Affairs and Advocacy, American Diabetes Association

The Price of Security: On the Causality and Impact of Lay-off Risks on Wages

    Get PDF
We examine the impact of lay-off risks on wages. Portfolio as well as search theoreticmodelling predicts higher exogenous lay-off risks to go along with higher wages. But,an impact of wages on lay-off risks (e.g., endogenous job destruction) is also plausible.Using the German BA Employment Panel (2008), we estimate a wage equation withexogenous lay-off risks for the most important industries in West Germany. We addressthe mutual causality by controlling for endogeneity via an instrumental variableapproach. Furthermore, we restrict our analysis to the high skilled to avoid a highimpact on tariff commitment. Our findings suggest the presence of risk premiums inthree of five industries. The level of impact and its significance depends on the industryand on the gender of the employee.Lay-off risk, wages

Almost optimal adaptive LQ control: observed state case

    Get PDF
In this paper we propose an almost optimal indirect adaptive controller for input/state dynamical systems. The control part of the adaptive scheme is based on a modified LQ control law: by adding a time varying gain to the certainty equivalent control law we avoid the conflict between identification and contro

Adaptive poleplacement: the division by zero problem

    Get PDF
We re-examine the division by zero problem which occurs in certainty equivalence based indirect adaptive control algorithms applied to linear systems. By exploiting a parametrization for linear systems induced by the continued fraction description of its transfer function, the division by zero problem obtains a very simple geometric representation that can be used to virtually eliminate the problem in the adaptive algorith

Implementation of shepherdism in the reclamation of the Bełchatów brown coal mine as care for the environment, people and the economy

The EU is currently under an energy transition and the phase-out of coal mining and burning. The Bełchatów brown coal mine is scheduled to stop its operations in 2036. It is crucial to analyse the transformation of the coal mining regions as a multilayered problem, which requires an insight into the creation of new employment opportunities, restructuring of the social institutions and remediation and revitalisation of the degraded environment. I focused on the implementation of wood pastures, which are currently not researched in the context of post-coal mining landscapes. Wood sheep pastures have a positive influence on degraded landscapes by enhancing the accumulation of soil organic carbon, soil formation, water-holding capacity, development of soil microorganisms and provision of varied habitats for different species. Local employment will have higher resilience if industrial heritage tourism is supported by pastoral tourism and the manufacturing of sheep-derived products. Through literature review, I found that the local economy, society and landscape altogether will benefit from shepherdism if it is implemented along with social change and land management transition towards community-led common pool resource institutions. They are advantageous by being governed by a group of members, local and scientific knowledge diversity, high consent with decisions, improved monitoring and socio-ecological endurance. Finally, the application of sheep pastoralism in multiple post-coal mining sites can contribute to the revival of sheep farming in Poland

Expectations and Saving Behavior: An Empirical Analysis

In this paper we analyze the impact of the expectations about future labor income on thesaving behavior of German households. We measure expectations on an individual basisinstead of generalized risk measures as it is common in existing studies. We use aunique panel data set on household savings. We find that that a higher unemploymentexpectation significantly decreases savings. However, we are not able to identify asignificant relationship between general future income expectations and savings. Moreover,we find that good health expectations increase savings in Western Germany, butdecrease the savings in Eastern Germany
