    Oral hygiene practices and dental caries prevalence among 12 & 15 years school children in Ambala, Haryana -A cross-sectional study

    Background: Dental caries and gum disease are a major public health problem predominantly affecting children worldwide. Therefore the present study was conducted to assess oral hygiene practices, prevalence of dental caries and periodontal diseases among 12 and 15 years old high school children in public and government schools of Ambala district, Haryana and to provide data for planning and evaluation of oral health care promotion programs. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive survey of 12 and 15 years old children in government and private schools was conducted in Ambala, Haryana. A sample of 992 school children was selected by a two-stage cluster sampling method. Dental caries and periodontal health was examined using WHO standard criteria. The student’s t-test and one way ANOVA were used for statistical analysis. Results: The prevalence of dental caries was 34.3% and 46.5% at 12 and 15 years respectively. Mean DMFT in 12 years was 0.82 and in 15 years it was 1.26. More than 90% of subjects in both the age groups were using tooth brush to clean their teeth. Toothpaste was used by 96.7% (228) of subjects belonging to 12 year age group and 93% (703) of subjects who were of 15 years of age. Gingival bleeding was found in majority of subjects. Conclusions: The overall prevalence of dental caries was low but the prevalence of gingivitis was quite high.     Electronics design and development of Near-Infrared Imager, Spectrometer and Polarimeter

    NISP, a multifaceted near-infrared instrument for the upcoming 2.5m IR telescope at MIRO Gurushikhar, Mount Abu, Rajasthan, India is being developed at PRL, Ahmedabad. NISP will have wide (FOV = 10' x 10') field imaging, moderate (R=3000) spectroscopy and imaging polarimetry operating modes. It is designed based on 0.8 to 2.5 micron sensitive, 2048 X 2048 HgCdTe (MCT) array detector from Teledyne. Optical, Mechanical and Electronics subsystems are being designed and developed in-house at PRL. HAWAII-2RG (H2RG) detector will be mounted along with controlling SIDECAR ASIC inside LN2 filled cryogenic cooled Dewar. FPGA based controller for H2RG and ASIC will be mounted outside the Dewar at room temperature. Smart stepper motors will facilitate motion of filter wheels and optical components to realize different operating modes. Detector and ASIC temperatures are servo controlled using Lakeshore's Temperature Controller (TC) 336. Also, several cryogenic temperatures will be monitored by TC for health checking of the instrument. Detector, Motion and Temperature controllers onboard telescope will be interfaced to USB Hub and fiber-optic trans-receiver. Remote Host computer interface to remote end trans-receiver will be equipped with in-house developed GUI software to control all functionalities of NISP.     Microbial exposure during early human development primes fetal immune cells

    Human fetal immune system begins to develop early during gestation, however factors responsible for fetal immune-priming remain elusive. We explored potential exposure to microbial agents in-utero and their contribution towards activation of memory T cells in fetal tissues. We profiled microbes across fetal organs using 16S-rRNA gene sequencing and detected low but consistent microbial signal in fetal gut, skin, placenta and lungs, in 2nd trimester of gestation. We identified several live bacterial strains including Staphylococcus and Lactobacillus in fetal tissues, which induced in vitro activation of memory T cells in fetal mesenteric lymph-node, supporting the role of microbial exposure in fetal immune-priming. Finally, using SEM and RNA-ISH, we visualised discrete localisation of bacteria-like structures and eubacterial-RNA within 14th week fetal gut lumen.     Differential effect of woody plant canopies on species composition and diversity of ground vegetation: a case study

    We examined the effect of three woody plant canopies of contrasting characteristics on species composition and diversity of the ground vegetation. Understorey environment differed in terms of light intensity and soil factors between the three canopy types. NMS ordination, based on Importance Value Indices of the herbaceous species, resulted into three clusters corresponding to the three woody plant canopies. NMS axis-1 was related to light intensity and axis-2 was related to soil water holding capacity. Diversity parameters for the herbaceous vegetation, which were significantly different between canopy types, were also related to NMS axes. The canopy type exhibiting intermediate levels of light intensity, soil moisture and soil carbon, reflected the greatest herbaceous diversity.     Airway Epithelium: A Neglected but Crucial Cell Type in Asthma Pathobiology

    The features of allergic asthma are believed to be mediated mostly through the Th2 immune response. In this Th2-dominant concept, the airway epithelium is presented as the helpless victim of Th2 cytokines. However, this Th2-dominant concept is inadequate to fill some of the vital knowledge gaps in asthma pathogenesis, like the poor correlation between airway inflammation and airway remodeling and severe asthma endotypes, including Th2-low asthma, therapy resistance, etc. Since the discovery of type 2 innate lymphoid cells in 2010, asthma researchers started believing in that the airway epithelium played a crucial role, as alarmins, which are the inducers of ILC2, are almost exclusively secreted by the airway epithelium. This underscores the eminence of airway epithelium in asthma pathogenesis. However, the airway epithelium has a bipartite functionality in sustaining healthy lung homeostasis and asthmatic lungs. On the one hand, the airway epithelium maintains lung homeostasis against environmental irritants/pollutants with the aid of its various armamentaria, including its chemosensory apparatus and detoxification system. Alternatively, it induces an ILC2-mediated type 2 immune response through alarmins to amplify the inflammatory response. However, the available evidence indicates that restoring epithelial health may attenuate asthmatic features. Thus, we conjecture that an epithelium-driven concept in asthma pathogenesis could fill most of the gaps in current asthma knowledge, and the incorporation of epithelial-protective agents to enhance the robustness of the epithelial barrier and the combative capacity of the airway epithelium against exogenous irritants/allergens may mitigate asthma incidence and severity, resulting in better asthma control

    Upgradation and modernization of eye banking services: Integrating tradition with innovative policies and current best practices

    Purpose: The purpose of this study is to review the history and evolution of the National Eye Bank (NEB) and analyze the impact over the years and report the outcome of the invested resources. Methods: Review of archival material, records, project reports, policy and procedures' manuals, and publications was done. Descriptive and analytical processing of data obtained was undertaken. Parameters evaluated included total collection, transplantation, utilization rates of donor cornea, changing trends over time in terms of numbers and duration of recipients waiting, impactful research translated into changes in standard operating protocols, new facilities, and subsequent effects on numbers or quality assurance measures and overview of major achievements. Periodic situational analysis with contextual relevance and interpretation of outcomes was done pertaining to national goals and international standards. Results: The NEB and cornea services have played a key leadership role in furthering the development of eye banking and corneal transplantation services. The contribution extends beyond routine patient care to education, training, generation of resources, advocacy, and policymaking. In quantifiable terms, the overall performance has steadily increased over the years. Major contributions include training of doctors, eye bank staff and corneal surgeons, introduction of innovative techniques for corneal transplantation, setting of national standards for eye banking and provision of preservation media, customized corneal, and ocular surface cell replacement therapy in collaboration with other departments and institutes. Conclusion: The eye banking and corneal transplantation facilities have evolved with time providing quality services, modernized as appropriate with updated knowledge and incorporating technological advances supported by the systematic evidence-based approach
