Constraints on Dimensional Warped Spaces
In order to investigate the phenomenological implications of allowing gauge
fields to propagate in warped spaces of more than five dimensions, we consider
a toy model of a space warped by the presence of a anisotropic bulk
cosmological constant. After solving the Einstein equation, three classes of
solutions are found, those in which the additional () dimensions are
growing, shrinking or remaining constant. It is found that gauge fields
propagating in these spaces have a significantly different Kaluza Klein (KK)
mass spectrum and couplings from that of the Randall and Sundrum model. This
leads to a greatly reduced lower bound on the KK scale, arising from

Involutions and the Gelfand character
The Gelfand representation of is the multiplicity-free direct
sum of the irreducible representations of . In this paper, we
use a result of Adin, Postnikov, and Roichman to find a recursive generating
function for the Gelfand character. In order to find this generating function,
we investigate descents of so-called -unimodal involutions
Dynamical density functional theory for dense atomic liquids
Starting from Newton's equations of motion, we derive a dynamical density
functional theory (DDFT) applicable to atomic liquids. The theory has the
feature that it requires as input the Helmholtz free energy functional from
equilibrium density functional theory. This means that, given a reliable
equilibrium free energy functional, the correct equilibrium fluid density
profile is guaranteed. We show that when the isothermal compressibility is
small, the DDFT generates the correct value for the speed of sound in a dense
liquid. We also interpret the theory as a dynamical equation for a coarse
grained fluid density and show that the theory can be used (making further
approximations) to derive the standard mode coupling theory that is used to
describe the glass transition. The present theory should provide a useful

I Made a Choice : Exploring the Persuasion Tactics Used by Online Romance Scammers in Light of Cialdini\u27s Compliance Principles
Online romance scams cause a disproportionately high amount of loss to victims when compared to other cybercrimes, and evidence suggests these scams may be more pervasive than official figures indicate. Unlike some other cybercrimes, an online romance scam is only successful to the extent that the scammer can persuade the victim to carry out requests. In his book, Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion, psychologist Robert Cialdini has identified six psychological principles often exploited by those seeking to gain the compliance of others; these principles may provide a good framework for understanding the effectiveness of the tactics used by online romance scammers. The study described in this paper sought to accomplish two goals. The first was to identify common themes related to the persuasion tactics used by online romance scammers through an analysis of first-hand stories told by victims. The study identified a number of key themes regarding what victims were led to believe by scammers during the course of the scam. The second goal was to discuss these findings within the context of Cialdini’s compliance principles. The study’s findings have potential implications for victims and their family members, social workers, members of the financial industry, social media, and law enforcement. It is hoped that a better understanding of how online romance scammers exploit victims’ psychological weaknesses will promote a culture of support for victims, and encourage greater attention to be given to this serious and devastating crime
The role of the ETS factor ELF3 in the normal and malignant prostate
The ETS transcription factor family members are involved in multiple cancers, including prostate cancer. Whilst extensive literature exists on the highly prevalent TMPRSS2-ERG gene fusion, the role of other ETS factors in prostate cancer is less well understood. ELF3 has been ascribed both oncogenic and tumour suppressive roles in prostate cancer and has been highlighted as a regulator of epithelial cell differentiation in other tissues. The overarching aim of this project was to elucidate the role of ELF3 in the context of both normal prostate development and prostate cancer.
This study details an extensive expression profile of ELF3 in prostate epithelial cell lines, primary prostate cell subpopulations and prostate tissue. ELF3 expression was restricted to the basal compartment of epithelial glands, specifically to the committed basal cell subpopulation of the basal epithelial hierarchy. Appropriate cell models were used to investigate the role of ELF3 in the prostate. By silencing ELF3 in BPH-1 and PC3 cells, ELF3 was established as a regulator of the cell cycle. This manifested as a decrease in colony forming ability, migration and cell viability caused by G2 cell cycle arrest. Furthermore, manipulating ELF3 expression altered the differentiation status of cell lines and primary cells, highlighting that a balance of ELF3 expression is required to maintain proper differentiation of the epithelial hierarchy. Finally, a possible link of ELF3 to more advanced prostate tumours using tissue microarray analysis, a potential association with neuroendocrine differentiation and putative survival advantage of ELF3 expression in cancer vs normal cells, was identified.
These results suggest that ELF3 acts as an oncogene in the prostate cancer setting. However, its importance in normal prostate epithelial cell growth and differentiation has also been demonstrated. Work should now focus on identifying appropriate downstream effectors that could be targeted to exploit these properties for prostate cancer treatment
