Produtividade E Qualidade De Cultivares De Batata Para Industrialização Na Forma De Batata-palha E Chips
Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)Brazilian market of potato processing has presented expressive development in recent years. However, its expansion is constrained by raw material supply suitable for industrial processing. Selection of adequate cultivars contributes to final product cost reduction as well as its yield and quality improvement. The research aimed to study tuber yield and evaluate its frying potential for shoestrings and chips,of potato cultivars recently introduced in Brazil. Nine potato cultivars (Arizona,Caruso,Destiny,Excelence,Saviola,Agata,Almera,Fontane and Markies) were assessed in an experiment carried out between January and May,2013,in South-West region of Minas Gerais State,Brazil. ‘Arizona’ and ‘Caruso’ cultivars exhibited superior productive potential and along with ‘Markies’ the highest production of marketable tubers. ‘Caruso’ and ‘Destiny’ produced more than 20% of dry matter and the lowest reducing sugar levels. ‘Caruso’ exhibited the highest frying yield in both processing shapes and absorbed less fat as shoestring. ‘Destiny’ absorbed less fat when processed as chips. ‘Excelence’ presented intermediary performance for every evaluated attribute. ‘Caruso’,‘Destiny’,and ‘Excelence’ produced chips with appropriate color for market. Among the assessed cultivars,‘Caruso’,‘Destiny’,and ‘Excelence’ were the most promising. These cultivars demonstrated appropriate processing ability in the shape of shoestrings. ‘Destiny’ could also be indicated to be processed as chips. © 2016,Sociedade de Olericultura do Brasil. The Lemaitre Model and the Generalisation of the Cosmic Mass
We consider the spherically symmetric metric with a comoving perfect fluid
and non-zero pressure -- the Lemaitre metric -- and present it in the form of a
calculational algorithm. We use it to review the definition of mass, and to
look at the apparent horizon relations on the observer's past null cone. We
show that the introduction of pressure makes it difficult to separate the mass
from other physical parameters in an invariant way. Under the usual mass
definition, the apparent horizon relation, that relates the diameter distance
to the cosmic mass, remains the same as in the Lemaitre-Tolman case.Comment: latex, 16 pages, Revision has minor changes due to referee's

Enhancing the effective critical current density in a Nb superconducting thin film by cooling in an inhomogeneous magnetic field
peer reviewedQuantitative magneto-optical imaging of a type-II superconductor thin film cooled under zero, homogeneous, and inhomogeneous applied magnetic fields, indicates that the latter procedure leads to an enhancement of the screening
capacity. Such an observation is corroborated by both B-independent and B-dependent critical state model analyses.
Furthermore, repulsive (attractive) vortex-(anti)vortex interactions were found to have a decisive role in the shielding
ability, with initial states prepared with vortices resulting in a shorter magnetic flux front penetration depth than those
prepared with antivortices. The proposed strategy could be implemented to boost the performance of thin superconducting devices
The Metric of the Cosmos from Luminosity and Age Data
This paper presents the algorithm for determining the Lemaitre-Tolman (LT)
model that best fits given datasets for maximum stellar ages, and SNIa
luminosities, both as functions of redshift. It then applies it to current
cosmological data. Special attention must be given to the handling of the
origin, and the region of the maximum diameter distances. As with a previous
combination of datasets (galaxy number counts and luminosity distances versus
redshift), there are relationships that must hold at the region of the maximum
diameter distance, which are unlikely to be obeyed exactly by real data. We
show how to make corrections that enable a self-consistent solution to be
found. We address the questions of the best way to approximate discrete data
with smooth functions, and how to estimate the uncertainties of the output -
the 3 free functions that determine a specific LT metric. While current data
does not permit any confidence in our results, we show that the method works
well, and reasonable LT models do fit with or without a cosmological constant.Comment: 25 pages, 8 figures; matches published versio
Cell-derived microvesicles in infective endocarditis: Role in diagnosis and potential for risk stratification at hospital admission
Objectives: To characterize the plasmatic profile of cell-derived microvesicles (MVs) at diagnosis and during the treatment of patients with infective endocarditis (IE). Methods: Blood samples from 57 patients with IE were obtained on 3 consecutive moments: upon admission (T0), at 2 weeks (T1), and at the end of treatment (T2), and were compared with 22 patients with other bacterial infections. MPs were measured by flow cytometry and labeled for specific cell markers of CD45 (leukocytes), CD66b (neutrophils), CD14 (monocytes), CD41a (platelets), CD51 (endothelial cells), CD3 (T lymphocyte) and CD235a (erythrocytes). Results: MVs from platelets (pltMVs), leukocytes (leukMVs), neutrophils (neutMVs), monocytes (monoMVs) and lymphocytes (lymphMVs) were significantly more elevated in the patients with IE, compared to the patients with other bacterial infections, despite comparable age, sex, blood counts and C-reactive protein levels. MVs values revealed a relatively stable pattern over time in IE, except for a significant increase in leukMVs and neutMVs in T1. LeukMVs (p = 0.011), neutMVs (p = 0.010), monoMVs (p = 0.016) and lymphMVs (p = 0.020), measured at admission, were significantly higher in IE patients that died during hospitalization in comparison with those that survived. In a multivariable analyses, the levels of neutMVs remained as an independent factor associated with mortality (odds ratio 2.203; 95% confidence interval 1.217 - 3.988; p = 0.009), adjustment for heart failure during the treatment. Conclusions: Plasma levels of pltMVs, leukMVs, neutMVs, monoMVs and lymphMVs were significantly more elevated in patients with IE than in patients with other bacterial infections at hospital admission. Furthermore, neutMVs at admission have been identified as an independent predictor of mortality in patients with IE. Thus, cell derived MPs may become an important tool in the differential diagnosis and mortality risk assessment early in the course of IE suspected cases
