    Reformulation of the Stochastic Potential Switching Algorithm and a Generalized Fourtuin-Kasteleyn Representation

    A new formulation of the stochastic potential switching algorithm is presented. This reformulation naturally leads us to a generalized Fourtuin-Kasteleyn representation of the partition function Z. A formula for internal energy E and that of heat capacity C are derived from derivatives of the partition function. We also derive a formula for the exchange probability in the replica exchange Monte Carlo method. By combining the formulae with the Stochastic Cutoff method, we can greatly reduce the computational time to perform internal energy and heat capacity measurements and the replica exchange Monte Carlo method in long-range interacting systems. Numerical simulations in three dimensional magnetic dipolar systems show the validity and efficiency of the method.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, to appear in PR

    Continuous loading of 1^{1}S0_{0} calcium atoms into an optical dipole trap

    We demonstrate an efficient scheme for continuous trap loading based upon spatially selective optical pumping. We discuss the case of 1^{1}S0_{0} calcium atoms in an optical dipole trap (ODT), however, similar strategies should be applicable to a wide range of atomic species. Our starting point is a reservoir of moderately cold (≈300μ\approx 300 \muK) metastable 3^{3}P2_{2}-atoms prepared by means of a magneto-optic trap (triplet-MOT). A focused 532 nm laser beam produces a strongly elongated optical potential for 1^{1}S0_{0}-atoms with up to 350 μ\muK well depth. A weak focused laser beam at 430 nm, carefully superimposed upon the ODT beam, selectively pumps the 3^{3}P2_{2}-atoms inside the capture volume to the singlet state, where they are confined by the ODT. The triplet-MOT perpetually refills the capture volume with 3^{3}P2_{2}-atoms thus providing a continuous stream of cold atoms into the ODT at a rate of 10710^7 s−1^{-1}. Limited by evaporation loss, in 200 ms we typically load 5×1055 \times 10^5 atoms with an initial radial temperature of 85 μ\muK. After terminating the loading we observe evaporation during 50 ms leaving us with 10510^5 atoms at radial temperatures close to 40 μ\muK and a peak phase space density of 6.8×10−56.8 \times 10^{-5}. We point out that a comparable scheme could be employed to load a dipole trap with 3^{3}P0_{0}-atoms.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Selectivities of K/Ca and K/Pb Exchange in Two Tropical Soils

    Measurement of cation selectivity in soils provides important information about the affinity and binding strength of a particular cation on soil surfaces. Gaines-Thomas (KGT) selectivity coefficients were determined for a variety of K/Ca and K/Pb ratios on an Oxisol and Ultisol soil from Puerto Rico. The calculated KGT values indicated a preference for K+ over Ca2+ or Pb2+. The selectivity for Pb2+ was significantly greater than that for Ca2+ due to the larger hydrated charge density of Pb2+ relative to that of Ca2+. The patterns of selectivity were independent of metal type. The selectivity of the Oxisol for Ca2+ or Pb2+ exhibited no trend/did not change with changes in divalent metal surface coverage indicating exchange sites had similar affinities for Ca2+ and Pb2+. The Ultisol displayed a decrease in selectivity for Ca2+ and Pb2+ with increasing surface coverage of these ions. This was attributed to the presence of smectite in the Ultisol which was able to partially collapse when K+ saturated. Some of the Pb sorption in the soils was due to chemisorption. The Oxisol chemisorbed ~ 3000 ppm Pb while that value for the Ultisol was ~ 1900 ppm. The differences were due to the greater quantities of Fe/Al oxides and organic matter in the Oxisol relative to the Ultisol. SEM-EDX spectroscopy detected discrete Pb-C phases in both soils. The C was from organic matter as PbCO3 was not stable under experimental conditions. It was possible Pb was associated with organic sulfhydral groups. The selectivity exhibited by soil systems for various nutrient and heavy metals is important in elucidating how available these metals will be for plant/animal uptake as well as their mobility and stability in the soil environment

    Impact of lightning-NO on eastern United States photochemistry during the summer of 2006 as determined using the CMAQ model

    A lightning-nitrogen oxide (NO) algorithm is implemented in the Community Multiscale Air Quality Model (CMAQ) and used to evaluate the impact of lightning-NO emissions (LNO<sub>x</sub>) on tropospheric photochemistry over the United States during the summer of 2006. <br><br> For a 500 mole per flash lightning-NO source, the mean summertime tropospheric NO<sub>2</sub> column agrees with satellite-retrieved columns to within −5 to +13%. Temporal fluctuations in the column are moderately well simulated; however, the addition of LNO<sub>x</sub> does not lead to a better simulation of day-to-day variability. The contribution of lightning-NO to the model column ranges from ∼10% in the northern US to >45% in the south-central and southeastern US. Lightning-NO adds up to 20 ppbv to upper tropospheric model ozone and 1.5–4.5 ppbv to 8-h maximum surface layer ozone, although, on average, the contribution of LNO<sub>x</sub> to model surface ozone is 1–2 ppbv less on poor air quality days. LNO<sub>x</sub> increases wet deposition of oxidized nitrogen by 43% and total deposition of nitrogen by 10%. This additional deposition reduces the mean magnitude of the CMAQ low-bias in nitrate wet deposition with respect to National Atmospheric Deposition monitors to near zero. <br><br> Differences in urban/rural biases between model and satellite-retrieved NO<sub>2</sub> columns were examined to identify possible problems in model chemistry and/or transport. CMAQ columns were too large over urban areas. Biases at other locations were minor after accounting for the impacts of lightning-NO emissions and the averaging kernel on model columns. <br><br> In order to obtain an upper bound on the contribution of uncertainties in NO<sub>y</sub> chemistry to upper tropospheric NO<sub>x</sub> low biases, sensitivity calculations with updated chemistry were run for the time period of the Intercontinental Chemical Transport Experiment (INTEX-A) field campaign (summer 2004). After adjusting for possible interferences in NO<sub>2</sub> measurements and averaging over the entire campaign, these updates reduced 7–9 km biases from 32 to 17% and 9–12 km biases from 57 to 46%. While these changes lead to better agreement, a considerable unexplained NO<sub>2</sub> low-bias remains in the uppermost troposphere

    The Diffusion of Humans and Cultures in the Course of the Spread of Farming

    The most profound change in the relationship between humans and their environment was the introduction of agriculture and pastoralism. [....] For an understanding of the expansion process, it appears appropriate to apply a diffusive model. Broadly, these numerical modeling approaches can be catego- rized in correlative, continuous and discrete. Common to all approaches is the comparison to collections of radiocarbon data that show the apparent wave of advance of the transition to farming. However, these data sets differ in entry density and data quality. Often they disregard local and regional specifics and research gaps, or dating uncertainties. Thus, most of these data bases may only be used on a very general, broad scale. One of the pitfalls of using irregularly spaced or irregularly documented radiocarbon data becomes evident from the map generated by Fort (this volume, Chapter 16): while the general east-west and south-north trends become evident, some areas appear as having undergone anomalously early transitions to farming.     Recovery of Large Angular Scale CMB Polarization for Instruments Employing Variable-delay Polarization Modulators

    Variable-delay Polarization Modulators (VPMs) are currently being implemented in experiments designed to measure the polarization of the cosmic microwave background on large angular scales because of their capability for providing rapid, front-end polarization modulation and control over systematic errors. Despite the advantages provided by the VPM, it is important to identify and mitigate any time-varying effects that leak into the synchronously modulated component of the signal. In this paper, the effect of emission from a 300300 K VPM on the system performance is considered and addressed. Though instrument design can greatly reduce the influence of modulated VPM emission, some residual modulated signal is expected. VPM emission is treated in the presence of rotational misalignments and temperature variation. Simulations of time-ordered data are used to evaluate the effect of these residual errors on the power spectrum. The analysis and modeling in this paper guides experimentalists on the critical aspects of observations using VPMs as front-end modulators. By implementing the characterizations and controls as described, front-end VPM modulation can be very powerful for mitigating 1/f1/f noise in large angular scale polarimetric surveys. None of the systematic errors studied fundamentally limit the detection and characterization of B-modes on large scales for a tensor-to-scalar ratio of r=0.01r=0.01.     Compiler verification meets cross-language linking via data abstraction

    Many real programs are written in multiple different programming languages, and supporting this pattern creates challenges for formal compiler verification. We describe our Coq verification of a compiler for a high-level language, such that the compiler correctness theorem allows us to derive partial-correctness Hoare-logic theorems for programs built by linking the assembly code output by our compiler and assembly code produced by other means. Our compiler supports such tricky features as storable cross-language function pointers, without giving up the usual benefits of being able to verify different compiler phases (including, in our case, two classic optimizations) independently. The key technical innovation is a mixed operational and axiomatic semantics for the source language, with a built-in notion of abstract data types, such that compiled code interfaces with other languages only through axiomatically specified methods that mutate encapsulated private data, represented in whatever formats are most natural for those languages.National Science Foundation (U.S.) (Grant CCF-1253229)United States.     Equations over free inverse monoids with idempotent variables

    We introduce the notion of idempotent variables for studying equations in inverse monoids. It is proved that it is decidable in singly exponential time (DEXPTIME) whether a system of equations in idempotent variables over a free inverse monoid has a solution. The result is proved by a direct reduction to solve language equations with one-sided concatenation and a known complexity result by Baader and Narendran: Unification of concept terms in description logics, 2001. We also show that the problem becomes DEXPTIME hard , as soon as the quotient group of the free inverse monoid has rank at least two. Decidability for systems of typed equations over a free inverse monoid with one irreducible variable and at least one unbalanced equation is proved with the same complexity for the upper bound. Our results improve known complexity bounds by Deis, Meakin, and Senizergues: Equations in free inverse monoids, 2007. Our results also apply to larger families of equations where no decidability has been previously known.Comment: 28 pages.
