    Influence of dietary nutrients on life history-related traits of black flies and mosquitoes

    The sugar-feeding ecology of dipteran vectors has recently been targeted because it presents opportunities to inoculate common food sources for these dipterans with entomopathogenic bacteria as a means of controlling the population of host-seeking adult dipteran vectors. Whereas this approach to vector control holds some promise, differences in the nutrient composition and concentration in sugary food sources can influence the food selection pattern of dipteran vectors and potentially confound the outcomes of field trials on the efficacy of entomopathogenic bacteria as vector control agents. Further, nutrient components of bacteria-inoculated artificial diets may present unintended effects of extending the survivorship or fecundity of the target population and potentially render the whole approach counterproductive. The present study investigated the diet-specific factors that influence the foraging decisions of female Simulium venustum/verecundum (Diptera: Simuliidae) and female Anopheles stephensi (Diptera: Culicidae) on artificial nectar and honeydew. Paired choice experiments showed that the black flies forage more frequently from high calorie diets, which contained melezitose, or those diets that contained amino acids, compared to low calorie melezitose-free diets or amino acid-free diets. The mosquitoes however displayed a more random diet selection pattern. The effects of sugary diets on certain life-history traits considered to be important to the ecological fitness of the black flies and mosquitoes were also investigated. Sugary diets had no significant effect on the survivorship and fecundity of the black flies, but they influenced the resistance of Leucocytozoon-infected flies to the parasite.     Vaping Is Not Safe: A Case of Acute Eosinophilic Pneumonia following Cannabis Vapor Inhalation

    There is a well-established association between inhalational exposures and acute eosinophilic pneumonia (AEP). The most reported exposure is cigarette smoking. Here, we present a case of progressive shortness of breath and nonproductive cough in a college student with no significant medical history, approximately 10 days after inhaling cannabis aerosols on two separate occasions. He was started on empiric antibiotics and bronchodilators without improvement. He was diagnosed with AEP based on peripheral eosinophilia and high-resolution CT image results. He made rapid recovery on intravenous glucocorticoids. Vaping has gained popularity among young adults mainly due to the perception that it is a safe alternative to smoking. This case shows that there may be a false sense of security with vaping. Vaping poses a yet-to-be quantified public health threat, which requires further studies

    Effect of atrial fibrillation on mortality in SARS-CoV-2 patients: A propensity score-matched analysis of nationwide hospitalizations in the United States

    Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is one of the most common arrhythmias encountered in patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection. There are racial disparities in the incidence of AF and COVID-19. Several studies have reported an association between AF and mortality. However, it remains to be determined if AF represents an independent risk factor for COVID-19-related mortality. Methods: A propensity score-matched (PSM) analysis was performed using data from the National Inpatient Sample to assess the risk of mortality among patients hospitalized with SARS-CoV-2 infection and incident AF from March 2020 through December 2020. Results: AF was less common among patients who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 as compared to those who tested negative (6.8% vs 7.4%, p < 0.001). White individuals with the virus had an increased incidence of AF but had lower mortality rates relative to Black and Hispanic patients. After PSM analysis, AF retained a significantly increased odds of mortality among patients with SARS-CoV-2 (OR: 1.35, CI: 1.29–1.41, p < 0.001). Conclusion: This PSM analysis shows that AF is an independent risk factor for inpatient mortality in those with SARS-CoV-2 infection and that White patients, while having a higher burden of SARS-CoV-2 and AF, demonstrate a significantly lower mortality rate as compared to their Black and Hispanic counterparts

    Empagliflozin, a sodium-glucose transporter 2 inhibitor, has been shown to bind to late sodium channels in mice cardiomyocytes. We sought to investigate the electrocardiographic (ECG) features associated with empagliflozin use in patients with diabetes mellitus. We compared ECG features of 101 patients before and after initiation of empagliflozin and found that empagliflozin was associated with a significant increase in QRS duration among diabetes patients with heart failure

    Survival differences in men and women with primary malignant cardiac tumor: An analysis using the surveillance, epidemiology and end results (SEER) database from 1973 to 2015

    Background-—No data are available on sex disparities in prevalence and survival for primary malignant cardiac tumors (PMCT). This study aimed to compare male and female PMCT prevalence and long-term survival rates. Methods and Results-—We utilized the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) 18 database from the National Cancer Institute for all PMCTs diagnosed between 1973 and 2015. From a total of 7 384 580 cases of cancer registered in SEER, we identified 327 men and 367 women with PMCTs. The majority (78%) of patients were white. Sarcoma was the most common type of PMCT in both men and women (±60%). Individuals diagnosed with lymphoma exhibited better survival than those with other types of PMCTs. Men were diagnosed at a younger age than women; however, there was no significant difference in overall survival between the sexes. Men diagnosed with PMCT between the ages of 51 and 65 years demonstrated prolonged survival compared with those diagnosed at younger or older ages. There was no difference in survival rates among women based on age at diagnosis. Conclusions-—PMCTs are rare in both men and women. Tumors tend to be diagnosed at an earlier age in men compared with women, but there is no sex disparity in survival rate. Sarcoma is the most common type of PMCT, and lymphoma is associated with the highest survival rate among both sexes
