    The Giant Chalukou Porphyry Mo Deposit, Northeast China: The Product of a Short-Lived, High Flux Mineralizing Event

    Whether giant porphyry ore deposits are the products of single, short-lived magmatic-hydrothermal events or multiple events over a prolonged interval is a topic of considerable debate. Previous studies, however, have all been devoted to porphyry Cu and Cu-Mo deposits. In this paper, we report high-precision isotope dilution-negative-thermal ionization mass spectrometric (ID-N-TIMS) molybdenite Re-Os ages for the newly discovered, world-class Chalukou porphyry Mo deposit (reserves of 2.46 Mt @ 0.087 wt % Mo) in NE China. Samples were selected based on a careful evaluation of the relative timing of the different vein types (i.e., A, B, and D veins), thereby ensuring that the suite of samples analyzed could be used to reliably determine the age and duration of mineralization. The molybdenite Re-Os geochronology reveals that hydrothermal activity at Chalukou involved two magmatic-hydrothermal events spanning an interval of 6.92 ± 0.16 m.y. The first event (153.96 ± 0.08/0.63/0.79 Ma, molybdenite ID-N-TIMS Re-Os age) was associated with the emplacement of a granite porphyry dated at 152.1 ± 2.2 Ma (zircon laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-microscopic [LA-ICP-MS] U-Pb ages), and led to only minor Mo mineralization, accounting for 90%) was deposited in less than 650 kyr, between 147.67 ± 0.10/0.60/0.76 and 147.04 ± 0.12/0.72/0.86 Ma (molybdenite ID-N-TIMS Re-Os ages), coincident with the emplacement of a fine-grained porphyry at 148.1 ± 2.6 Ma (zircon LA-ICP-MS U-Pb ages). The high-precision Re-Os age determinations presented here show, contrary to the finding of a number of studies of porphyry Cu and Cu-Mo systems, that the giant Chalukou porphyry Mo deposit primarily formed in a single, short-lived (<650 kyr) hydrothermal event, suggesting that this may also have been the case for other giant porphyry Mo deposits

    Luminescent 1,8-Naphthalimide-Derived ReI Complexes: syntheses, spectroscopy, X-ray structure and preliminary bioimaging in fission yeast cells

    A series of picolyl-functionalised, fluorescent 1,8-naphthalimide ligands (L) have been synthesised and coordi-nated to ReI to form luminescent cationic complexes of the general form fac-[Re(phen)(CO)3(L)]BF4. The complexes were characterised by using a range of spectroscopic and analytical techniques. One example of a complex was also characterised in the solid-state by using single-crystal X-ray diffraction, reveal-ing a distorted octahedral coordination sphere at ReI and Re– C/Re–N bond lengths within the expected ranges. All ligands were shown to be fluorescent, with the 4-amino derivatives showing intramolecular charge transfer in the visible region (511–534 nm). The complexes generally showed a mixture of ligand-centred and/or 3MLCT emission depending upon the na-ture of the coordinated 1,8-naphthalimide ligand. For selected complexes, confocal fluorescence microscopy was undertaken by using fission yeast cells (Schizosaccharomyces pombe) and showed that the structure of the 1,8-naphthalimide ligand influ-ences the uptake and localisation of the rhenium complex

    The potential impact of Brexit on the farming sector and wider environment is just one of the many challenges facing the Welsh Government. There are a range of decision and modelling tools which can be used to explore potential outcomes and the areas at risk where the environmental regulatory floor needs to be enhanced or social transition programmes put in place. The same tools can also be used to explore a range of ‘what if’ scenarios for different land management options which could be included in new Payment for Ecosystem Service (PES) schemes or in national land management payment schemes to replace CAP. To meet this challenge in Wales, a partnership between the Welsh Government, their stakeholders and a consortium of research organisations led by the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (CEH) was formed. This partnership, called ERAMMP, (https://erammp.wales/en) combined expert knowledge and a range of decision and modelling tools to examine potential changes in agricultural land use that might result from Brexit, and to explore potential benefits of new land management options

    Physicochemical conditions and timing of rodingite formation: evidence from rodingite-hosted fluid inclusions in the JM Asbestos mine, Asbestos, Québec

    Fluid inclusions and geological relationships indicate that rodingite formation in the Asbestos ophiolite, Québec, occurred in two, or possibly three, separate episodes during thrusting of the ophiolite onto the Laurentian margin, and that it involved three fluids. The first episode of rodingitization, which affected diorite, occurred at temperatures of between 290 and 360°C and pressures of 2.5 to 4.5 kbar, and the second episode, which affected granite and slate, occurred at temperatures of between 325 and 400°C and pressures less than 3 kbar. The fluids responsible for these episodes of alteration were moderately to strongly saline (~1.5 to 6.3 m eq. NaCl), rich in divalent cations and contained appreciable methane. A possible third episode of alteration is suggested by primary fluid inclusions in vesuvianite-rich bodies and secondary inclusions in other types of rodingite, with significantly lower trapping temperatures, salinity and methane content. The association of the aqueous fluids with hydrocarbon-rich fluids containing CH4 and higher order alkanes, but no CO2, suggests strongly that the former originated from the serpentinites. The similarities in the composition of the fluids in all rock types indicate that the ophiolite had already been thrust onto the slates when rodingitization occurred
